Nicole Richie Gives Birth To A Baby Boy

Welcome to the world Sparrow James Midnight Richie-Madden
September 9th, 2009

Congratulations are in order for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden on the birth of their second child, a baby boy they have named Sparrow James Midnight! The official announcement was made on Nicole’s official website but the news was quickly disseminated by Joel on his official Twitter profile. It’s a boy!!

In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009 Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes.

Joel tweeted: Geuss who’s back….. Oh i’m sorry we were only having a little baby boy.

I guess it turns out that those rumors we heard back in May about the baby being a boy turned out to be true!! You may recall that we learned over the weekend that Nicole reportedly checked into the hospital to give birth … and at last the Nic/Joel’s second child is born! Surely this must be a magic baby … he was born on 09.09.09. I can only imagine that the little guy is as cute as his big sister Harlow Winter Kate. Much, much love and congrats to the happy family on their expansion!! XO

So glad to hear that she finally gave birth! Much congrats to the beautiful little family.

  2. CoCo Says:

YAY! Can’t wait to see him! I bet he is adorable! They make cute babies!

  3. Kelly Says:

I love Joel and GC and all but honestly, what kind of a name is Sparrow?? dont people ever think how their kid is gonna feel with a name like that??

  4. Shell Says:

I guess its good that he can always go by James – especially if he looks like his daddy…nothing sparrow-like about the madden boys.

  5. Ford Says:

yay! love her, she’s a great mom!

  6. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Kelly — “dont people ever think how their kid is gonna feel with a name like that??” Um, like a rockstar? Trust me, these celeb children will rock their names right.

  7. Kelly Says:

I guess its just a matter or personal opinion, i know i would be mad if was given an offbeat name like that, but again im not the child of a celebrity …… but whatever happened to “celebrities are people just like us”?? Some of these names are pretty outrageous, but sparrow is definately not one of the worst. Im just saying.

  8. Ashley Says:

    Yay!
Not feeling the name too much either but I know he is just as adorable as his big sister Harlow ;)
    So happy for them!

  9. nicole Says:

i love the fact they had a little boy…i swear there gunna be the cutest family ever.
im not huge on the name – my mind went straight to Pirates lol. i think it would have been good to just have James Midnight.

  10. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

So cute and I am happy for her but what a ridiculous name!! I am sorry!!

  11. debho Says:

Have to agree. I’m all for unusual names, but Sparrow? A little brown nuisance bird. Ah well, each to their own and I guess the name will end up “fitting” him as a lot of funny names do. Harlow and Sparrow will be the cutest little siblings!

  12. dasNia Says:

    i’m happy for them.
And, as others already mentioned, at least both – Harlow and James – have one normal name… could’ve been worse. :)

  13. Melinda Says:

YAY! today is my husband’s birthday so 09/09 children must rock! ;-)

  14. Lola Says:

Sparrow? Why do they hate him? It’s not a name I would have chosen but I can’t wait to see pics!

  15. Siobhan Says:

Hey, could be worse. Middle names could be Captain and Jack

  16. Ashlee Says:

Yay! I love this couple, they are so cute. And Harlow is adorable so this little guy is going to be so cute!
I love the name Sparrow but I’ve always liked it as a girl’s name. But celeb babies rock their (strange) names. I can’t wait to see photos!

  17. sarah Says:

love NR & she seems to be a great Mummy & Harlow is super cute!!!! Congrats to them….however, Sparrow is pretty unusual even for celebs…oh well, thier baby, thier choice. Nice news though :)

  18. It's Britni, Bitch Says:

Sparrow is a beautiful name. As is midnight.

    And people… It’s not Pilot Inspektor…

    lmao

  19. Ama Says:

Sparrow- Harlow kind of rhymes. Anyways I think Sparrow may have a deep meaning for them, the child has enough names he can choose from to go by when he gets older. It is a little strange for a first name. Most of the children born these days have unique names :)

  20. Lauri Says:

It’s just a name. If when he gets older and doesn’t dig it, he could always go by James….
As you know, a rose by any other name would….

and it’s not CoCo either =D

  21. Jordan Says:

Call me crazy…but I kinda like the name… Harlow and Sparrow sound cute together.

  22. kristin Says:

9/9/09? wow! here’s hoping that adam will be watching over this child and the whole family.

  23. april Says:

    What a lucky baby! 09/09/09!

  24. Janie Says:

Congrats goes out! Sparrow – what a name! anyway leonas new single check it out guys:

  25. LOVE Says:

    today is my birthday toooo

    090909
    love it!

  26. Anna Says:

Sparrow James = good. I love the name James. Midnight is just… ugh. Why Nicole? Why? Ah well… what can you do, right? Congratulations are in order, and 09-09-2009 is such a cool birth date to have.

  27. Djoyful Says:

Harlow WINTER Kate Madden – born in the winter. Sparrow James MIDNIGHT Madden – born right around midnight. Maybe they decided time of day or time of year needed to be included in their names.

Harlow and Sparrow are a bit unique while James and Kate are a bit more common. I love both full names! Congrats to the Madden family.

  28. Jennifer Says:

LOVE the name! I kinda wish I could freeze myself and wait for this kid to be like 25, cause he will be a looker

  29. Furkel Says:

I’m usually not a big fan of wacky celebrity child names, but… Sparrow James Midnight? That’s actually kind of awesome, isn’t it?

  30. jamie Says:

OMG….Sparrow James Midnight? Seriously? SPARROW? You know, to each their own, but I have to say – personally – BLECH!

  31. Kristin Says:

I hate the name Sparrow. It is a little, plain, common bird. It is just not masculine-sounding. I would go with James Midnight — way cooler-sounding. Sparrow just sounds too dainty for a boy.

  32. Grace Says:

I actually like the name a lot. At least it’s not Pilot Inspecktor…. And you know he’s gonna be so freakin adorable that it won’t matter what the hell his name is.

  33. mindy Says:

congratulations to them. i think they are a great couple but harlow is not an attractive little girl.

  34. Renee Says:

Both children’s full names are perfect. Harlow and Sparrow scream rockstar, but if when the kids reach there teens or twenties and decide they hate them, the can easily go by James and Kate.

  35. Chivonne Says:

I love the names! As long as it isn’t completely stupid like Popsicle Stick Andrews or something like that I say the weirder the better!

  36. Tracy Says:

I truly hate people who give their children weird ass names. It only hurts the child and they will hate you for it. That especially goes out to you, Gwyneth.

  37. Jill Says:

Oh, I LOVE both of their names, and I think more people should start giving their children really unique names- not just celebrities! Enough with the trends, already- we’re going to be in a huge crowd of Bellas, etc. pretty soon, both dogs and children. I’m also a big fan of multiple names with one “normal” name, so the child has several choices. Partially because of my own- my parents didn’t even bother to put “Jillian” on my birth certificate..

  38. Lilliah Says:

uhhhh…TRULY HATE, Tracy? You should reserve that shit for someone who deserves it.

  39. erzebet Says:

maybe tracy is bent that she has such a boring name.

  40. Kendra Says:

I’m sure she had a c-section to have the baby on this date..I don’t think luck had anything to do with it..It’s kind of annoying but they’re a cute family so I’ll let it slide..

  41. stfu.kthnx Says:

duuude i love both thier kids names. Look i dont wanna sound… mean… But back @ high school there were like a million and one britney’s. Harlow and Sparrow aren’t THAT strange… Different but not weird so give them a break. Im sure there’s a meaning behind it like Djoyful said.
Anywaaaay congrats are in order to those two beautiful ppl… Im sure Sparrow is as cute as his older sister

  42. Z Says:

Naming your child is the one thing in life you can do all on your own and nobody can change it…except the child when he or she turns 18!
Trent, I will count on you to provide up to the minute celeb-spawn name change news starting in …….maybe 14 yrs???

  43. Courtney Says:

What IS it with these wacko names? Sparrow? Really?

  44. Jess Says:

We’re living in the 21st century. It’s more common to see ‘unusual’ names. I think it’s refreshing. I personally would have loved to have had a different name when I was kid. There were always at least another 4 or 5 Jessica’s in each year at school.

I’m happy with my name now, but I still think it would’ve been cool to have something unique and quirky.

  45. Dawn Says:

Congrats to them, but to me, Sparrow is a lovely name….for a GIRL!!!!! For goodness sake!

  46. shoho Says:

“As long as it isn’t completely stupid like Popsicle Stick Andrews or something ”

    HAHAHAHAHA
Got a good chuckle out of that one, thanks Chivonne :)

  47. Andrea Says:

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!! I’M SO HAPPY FOR THEM. :)

  48. seren Says:

I absolutely love both childrens full names. Both Harlow and Sparrow are beautiful names and they both have traditional/dull middle names to equal it out anyway.

  49. Melissa Says:

OMG I knew it!!! I’m so excited! They are definately my favorite celebrity family and I can’t wait to see pictures of this baby boy… I’m sure he will be just as adorable as Harlow.

And about the name, I think Sparrow is a freakin’ awesome name! I love it!

  50. christina Says:

i really, really hope she didn’t have a planned c-section because of the date but unfortunately i wouldn’t be surprised. seems to be very common among celebs these days. that is the ultimate in selfishness.

  51. Jennie Says:

Congrats to the family, but that is an aweful name

  52. Christine Says:

I’m still surprised they didn’t use something to honor DJ AM or MJ. Unless some other part of the name actually referes to them and we just don’t know it.
Either way: Sparrow? really? I see how it rhymes with harlow and its a nice word and all, it’s just not a NAME! James is a nice name, kind of boring. and then MIDNIGHT? again, really? unless again it has something to do with time of day he was born as someone above mentioned.

  53. Megan Says:

Why should they have to alter a planned name because people they knew died? It’s possible she didn’t plan the date. I mean, my baby cousin was due yesterday, it sometimes happens that babies are set to be born on unusual dates, it just happens, can’t help it.

  54. Danielle Says:

Sparrow definitely comes of as a gendered name to me, v. feminine…

  55. elenore Says:

Who cares what celebritys or nicole and joel name there kids for that matter . Everyone knows that the names obviously are ‘different’ then most . I love how like 50 people need to go off about it , lmao . Like it matters anyways ? Its pointless hearing about it too , haha but all goood .

  56. Heba Says:

They should have anopther boy named Jack, and then they would have JACK SPARROW!!! lol

  57. tsagrednerp Says:

How are they hurting their child with that name? This kid is 2 days old and will grow with this name, it’s his name, his identifier, how is that hurtful?

I personally like the name and think it works for a boy but what I think matters none at all to these people. Whether they’d named him Sticky Rice or John Patrick they have a healthy baby and they’re happy. Why does it have to be more than well wishes?

Why would it matter if she had a planned c-section or not? Did she endanger the baby/herself? No. Why is this adult’s choice your business? These debates I swear.

Congrats to them and happy wishes for their family.

  58. hatehyps Says:

@tsagrednerp….you can’t believe these debates? YOU are debating it as well, hypocrite.
and any person with a speck of a brain knows that a c-section is a major surgery and is quite a risk. so yes, she did endanger bother herself and the baby out of potential selfishness.

  59. Rory Says:

so right about it at least not being pilot inspektor.i dont like the name, but then again its not my baby so really doesnt matter what i think
