Neil Patrick Harris Does ‘New York’ Magazine
Neil Patrick Harris, who we just saw lookin’ all wet and sexy in the pages of Rolling Stone magazine over the weekend, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of New York magazine. In his coverstory interview, NPH talks about his upcoming stint as Emmy Awards host and also expresses that he and his boyfriend David Burtka would make great parents … even tho they aren’t expecting to become dads any time soon. The cover of New York magazine heralds NPH has “Hollywod’s First (Openly) Gay Breakthrough Star” but I’m really confused why they made him wear lipstick for his coverphoto. Here is NPH’s New York magazine coverphoto and some excerpts from his coverstory interview:

Despite rumors to the contrary, Neil Patrick Harris, star of How I Met Your Mother and host of this year’s Emmys, says he and partner David Burtka and are not expecting a child – yet. Still, “We’d make very good parents,” Harris, 36, tells New York Magazine. And they’re already making one very good couple. “We yin and yang very well,” he tells the magazine. “I’m just bowled over by him. I’m his forever protector, and I’m happiest when he’s happy.” But coming to terms with his sexuality in Hollywood wasn’t always so easy for the former child star of Doogie Howser, M.D. “I tried … dating different girls, being the funny, witty guy at the party,” he says. One person that helped inspire him? A gay Real World cast member. Danny Roberts, of The Real World: New Orleans, “was a unique entity at the time, as someone who was seemingly so confident in their own skin,” says Harris. As host of this year’s Emmy Awards, Harris jokes that he hoped to include the Muppets – specifically Statler and Waldorf up in the balcony – in the opening number. And while that plan didn’t pan out, the actor jokes, with self-mocking air quotes, that he’ll make this year’s show the “classy Emmys.” Tune in to the show Sept. 20 to see what he means!
I gotta say, I love the idea of NPH and David Burtka becoming parents … even tho they may not be expecting any children right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if these two do become dads sometime soon. After the jump, check out a few photos from NPH’s New York magazine photospread …

While I get that the photospread has a theatrical theme to it, I can’t help but be bothered by the coverphoto. Why does “Hollywood’s First (Openly) Gay Breakout Star” have to be wearing lipstick on a magazine cover? Personally, it seems to send the wrong message … that gay = men in make-up. While I and many of y’all understand the difference, there are a lot of folks out there who make the same assumption that all gay men like to dress like women. I find that insulting to both gay men and women. While it is really great to see Neil Patrick Harris on the covers of magazines, I’d be much happier if he was featured in a less confusing way.

I read this article on-line last night. The way Neil talks about David, and their relationship, makes my heart melt! I have a feeling that ,since it is such a private issue, the public wouldn’t know of any children until after the fact–so stay tuned.
Love both of them….They seem amazingly close..

I agree with your assessment on the cover Trent. Is it true Elton John and his husband are adopting a baby?

@davidsask — It’s true they expressed interest, whether or not they will has yet to be determined.

I think they would make great parents. They seem like really nice people.

There’s an episode of HIMYM where Barney is talking to someone’s baby (the person escapes me now) and is talking about marriage. It made me think of how hard it is for the gay community just to have kids, let alone being allowed to marry. This article reminded me of that. He would be the most fucking awesome dad ever.

Neil Patrick Harris makes my heart go bang bang booooom. Even the fact that he is openly gay makes him more and more amazing to me.(not normally something I look for as a straight woman haha)
Love him. LOOOOVE him.

davisask — Apparently they aren’t allowed to b/c they aren’t legally married; which doesn’t make sense b/c they were married (civil union) a few years ago)…
Love NPH and so happy to hear that his personal life is going as well as his professional one. I hope that he can be a role model for young actors that are worried that being true to themselves will hurt their careers.

I think the lipstick picture is really cute but more to the point, I think NPH is poking fun at the stereotype of gays, femininity, perversion, etc. I look at his expression and he seems to be having fun and being silly. I hope that was what he was trying to convey anyway.

did you see the rest of the magazine? another reality show or something. Its called Under The Arch. Some kid Sean Patrick Murray made it

@Stinker — you may be right but far too many people not as enlightened on GLBT issues will not see this as “poking fun” at the stereotype, they’ll see it as proof of the stereotype.

Love NPH, love the article, hate the cover.

I thought David already was a father, doesn’t he have 2 kids from his previous relationship?

@TouchofMyHand — What does that mean? I’m one to talk about what?

Hmm… I agree with both Trent and Stinker on this one. I do think that NPH is trying to subvert the stereotype that all men are cross-dressers or behave in ways that are traditionally considered feminine, but at the same time, I’m not sure if a lot of people will get the joke. When I saw it, I thought, “Oh, he’s poking fun at the stereotype.” But I’m certain lots of other people would take it as proof of said stereotype. Isn’t this a risk we always run when presenting subversive imagery? Unfortunately, some people will always look at an image intended to show the ridiculous nature of a stereotype and just think it is proof of the stereotype. Phew… after all that though… NPH, I love you! I think he’s a real pioneer. I know of plenty of sci-fi fanboys who “don’t get the whole gay thing” (whatever that means) who worship him as Dr. Horrible.

I immediately thought of Eddie Izzard (whom I LOOOOVE) when I saw that cover– am I the only one who thought NPH looked incredibly hot??? This coming from a straight woman with a predilection for men who can pull off makeup (Tim Curry in “Rocky Horror” was sex on a stick). I wasn’t offended at all but I can appreciate how some people might be. I just thought it was sexy as hell.
