My View Of The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards
The TV Guide

To wrap up the day’s coverage of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, let me share some of my personal photos and experiences from the show last night. As always, the folks at MTV were amazingly good to me and got me a great spot on the red carpet to cover arrivals and then got me access to watch the show in person. The whole night was a lot of fun but I have to confess, I almost missed out on the entire thing!

For some ungodly reason, I was not able to get a cab when I needed to get to Radio City Music Hall and because press check-in cuts off PERIOD at a specific time, I had to scramble to get to the venue on time. I managed to find the right subway line to get me to Radio City and then was forced to run around the block 4 TIMES to find the right press check-in venue. I was told the wrong thing over and over and at the last minute, an amazing intern named Tyler found me and brought me inside … with 2 minutes to spare. Once I got all checked-in, it was smooth sailing for the rest of the night. After the jump, check out some of my photos from the red carpet and a couple from inside the show …

To be honest, I had better luck on previous MTV red carpets in the celeb department but everyone I got to talk to was very nice. The weather was perfect and I was situated around really fun people … it was a great night.

The show was really cool to see in person. I was seated in the mezzanine level that came complete with gourmet food and open bars! Yeah, man, that’s the way to watch a show like this. Much, much love goes out to Emily for taking such great care of me. The opening performance was really very cool in person:

I met some fun folks who turned out to be Pink readers — Billy, Hanne and Bill … we all got along so well, the whole experience was just a lot of fun. I kid you not, the auditorium exploded in boos every time Kanye West‘s name was mentioned, he was a hated man last night … and rightfully so.

I opted out of the after parties to meet up with David and his friends Marissa, Ben, Shane and Jason at Joe’s Pub for drinks and then late night pizza afterward. It was a great night, the perfect way to get back into the swing of things here in NYC.

Yay! Glad you and David have been in NYC a lot lately! I just moved from OC to NYC, but still haven’t managed to bump into you guys yet. Though my best friend who got me hooked to Pink like four years back shouted “hi Trent” at you when you were at a bus stop in LA. Have fun in New York!

  8. PixiesBassline says:

  9. Jennifer says:

LOVE your MJ shirt! and Love your fierce.com LV’s!

  10. Mariah says:

Trent, if you go to Kelly Clarkson’s blog, you can see how much she really disapproves of all things Kanye West. TRUST ME – it’s worth a quick look. It’s just another reason why I loooooooooooove her soooo much :)

  11. jadedsweetie says:

Trent, can you tell us what was up with lil mama coming on on stage at the end of Jay Z’s performance? that was random!

    • @jadedsweetie — I’m sure I have no idea. I believe she was asked about it afterward and she said something like, Jay-Z’s song about NYC moved her emotionally to get on stage. I, personally, think that MTV should put seatbelts on VMA seats for all attendees.

  12. ariel says:

i didn´t like that taylor had win the award!! it was a stupid simple video!! but when kanye did that i felt it for her!!! how horrible she must have felt!!!

  13. CHASE says:

@Trent – LMFAO!!! Oh God, that made laugh. A lot. Anyways, I’m jealous. : ) What do you think of Britney not showing up, hmm? In all honesty, in a way, I’m disappointed but then again I’m sort of glad. Kanye stole the spotlight from the whole entire show. Even MJ and Janet, etc. It was really unfortunate. If Britney were there as a guest, I’m not sure if she could steal the show like last years.

  14. Lindsay says:

They need to give you a bigger spot rather then that little piece of paper to interview from. Don’t they know your the only honest blogger with a heart? Come on MTV… Show some love and give PITNB a Trent-Tent next year.

    • @Lindsay — LOL! The paper on the carpet let’s publicists know what publication you’re from … there are a lot of people crammed on the carpet, I was next to ABC News, CBS News and MSNBC … I’m totally fine with where MTV puts me on the carpet ;) But thanks, babe!!

  15. Grace says:

I don’t watch the VMAs anymore because….well MTV sucks, but I heard about Kanye’s idiocy. I couldn’t name or sing a Taylor Swift song to save my family’s life, but she definitely did not deserve that sort of embarrassment. Beyonce did not need this moron embarrassing her and Kanye actually deprived Beyonce of the win she get because she graciously had Taylor give her acceptance speech in her place.

I’m just annoyed that he completely ruined his music for me. I was a fan and now I can’t listen to him without thinking of what a huge jerk he is. He’s always been a jerk, but he just took it to a whole new level or douchedom.

  16. J says:

Yeah Lil Mama was random. I didn’t watch the whole performance of Jay-Z i was switching back and forth with a movie that JUST started and wanted the VMAs the end already (but really wanted to see the THIS IS IT trailer).

I at first thought, perhaps the moments i WAS watching, Lil Mama wasn’t shown and she was somehow incorporated with the song/performance. Then i saw her quickly run off stage at the end and thought that was weird. Then i thought perhaps she was somehow a producer of the song which i kinda laughed at even thinking that. SO yeah, random. She also looked like she was glaring at Beyonce at the end pose. She looked like a fierce B***H.

Trent, you never really gave an overall opinion of the show like you did previous years. Perhaps a small update or new post on your opinions of winners, performances and hosting etc… Oh and outfits too… but i bet that post will come soon. Especially about a certain someone who had costume changes between performances & awards…

    • @J — I did mention that I liked the show overall but Kanye’s shitty antics really marred the whole night. P!nk’s performance was my fave, followed by Beyonce’s. It felt like a much more entertaining show than last year’s.

  17. Hannah says:

OMG TRENT Are you wearing the Louis Vuitton hight tops?!? I’m sooooooo jeal!!!

  18. DaviD says:

    Kanye effed up……
that was a real douche move

  19. Katie says:

I’m glad Taylor Swift won and I was appalled by Kanye West’s behavior. Grow up. Other than that, I was very entertained by the VMAs. They were better than they’ve been in years. And I followed your tweets all night. Best coverage EVER #kanyeisadouche.

  20. Edwin says:

Do you have a picture of Maya, she was great!
    Bye!
