First Look: ‘The Smurfs’ Movie
Ready or not

OY! The day I feared would one day come … has come at last. That beloved cartoon from the 80′s, The Smurfs, is getting a modern CGI make-over for a new movie version of the ‘toon … and here is our first look at what the little guys will look like … behold:

This first image of a CGI Smurf from Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming Smurfs movie was posted online last night, but we had to take a few more steps to make sure it was the real deal. It turns out that the studio ran the promo image, of which you can find a scan below, in a magazine recently. Opening in theaters on December 17, 2010, the film will be directed by Raja Gosnell. “The Smurfs” were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world as Peyo.

Let me be the first to say, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I don’t like it. I much prefer the 2D version of The Smurfs over … this. My inner child is crying out for a return to the original animation. What do y’all think?

  2. dori says:

I with u, booooo! I would pay money to see a 2-d version, I still prefer to play 2-d video games too, original super mario!

  3. emily says:

i like them! they remind me of the figurines we had… my favorite was the baker with his little bread shovel or whatever it was….

  4. dasNia says:

i like what they made out of the 2D, but still I prefer 2D-cartoons. To me, cartoons have to be 2D. 3D takes a lot of the typical cartoon-spirit, I think.

I think he’s kind of cute.

I am so sick of the lack of originality being shown in Hollywood. Why do they have to keep effing with beloved 80′s icons? Next thing you know, they’ll be ruining He-Man and She-Ra. Turds.

  7. Beth says:

I so agree with you sweetie. I loooooved the 2-D version. Classics like the Smurfs, He-Man, She-ra, Thundercats, and Inspector Gadget should not be messed with!!!

  8. mdm says:

I’m just happy to see the return of the Smurf’s. I guess I’ll take what I can get.

  9. Ashlee says:

I just wish they would stop tryign to make cartoons look “real”. I liked my plain old 2D cartoons!

    …..I think it’s cute.

BLeh…I really just don’t like any old stuff being messed with, or any movie remakes, etc. This seems especially weird to me- do they even make Smurf stuff for kids these days, or is this actually geared toward us 30somethings?!

  12. patches says:

are you crazy! omg this is sooooo awesome! yaaaaaaay!! i LOVE the smurfs!! i new one day this would come, 2D is soooo 2000&late! CGI is the way to go now, get with the times!! this is going to be so cute!!

  13. CHASE says:

It looks like playdoh! Hello, Gumby, anyone?

  14. CHASE says:

@Patches – CGI is nice and all but 2-D is a lot more better in my opinion. I really liked how the movie “Enchanted” featured a classic 2-D animation. I believe CGI is less expensive though.

I like it. If it’s not going to be updated then what’s the point. If everyone likes it the old school way then buy the old episodes. There is no reason a new generation should not be able to enjoy it as well.
And I hate to break it to you but He-Man, Inspector Gadget, and Mario Bro’s were already made into horrible movies and they are making a newer version of He-man as well a Thundercats presently.
Everything is a copy of something. All your favorite cartoons, movies, and tv shows are just updates versions of something done long ago.
    Get over it…

  16. Joanne says:

I agree I hate it when they mess with my favorite old cartoons – but at least the image still looks like a Smurf, so hopefully they won’t foul it up too bad. Gargamel better still look like Gargamel though !!! :)

  17. Chris says:

I am really excited and it looks good

  18. Misty says:

As much as I love the old school stuff from my childhood, I have to admit I am a big fan of CGI. I can’t wait to take my daughter to see it.
