First Look: ‘The Roommate’
Last May we saw a few photos of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester filming scenes for her new movie called The Roommate which is remake of sorts of the creepy 90’s movie Single White Female which starred Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda. Today, Entertainment Weekly brings us our first look at Meester and co-star Minka Kelly in The Roommate which clearly shows that Meester is the crazy whackjob obsessed with her college roommate Kelly:
Loved 1992’s Single White Female? Then you’ll love 2010’s Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly thriller, The Roommate. Like Female, Roommate focuses on obsession: The film follows a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). For her role, Meester says she went method, researching mental illness with the help of psychologists and films like 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence. The actress tried to keep her distance from cast members — and a litter of kittens being used for the film — in order to retain her character’s level of emotional aloofness. “You would think that that idea of playing somebody who’s out of control or lost touch with reality is somehow fun, but it was to a point of discomfort,” the actress says. “[My character] is completely delusional and it’s definitely a cause of a chemical imbalance, so that wasn’t the easiest and most enjoyable thing. Even in her most normal moments, she’s genuinely a disturbed person. She had very abnormal wheels turning at all times.” But will friends let Meester play psychiatrist, now that she’s garnered knowledge about mental health? Not quite, says Meester. “I don’t think they’ll want my advice after they see this movie.”
We already know that Leighton Meester can act in TV, music videos and other miscellaneous projects so it remains to be seen if she can hold her own on the big screen. Personally, I think she can handle it. Playing a psychotic, obsessive crazy sounds like a lot of fun … methinks she’ll do well in this role. Again, we’re being given a “new” movie based on an old movie but Single White Female was so fun the first time around, I’m kinda curious to see what this updated version will look like. This is one redux I’d be willing so watch.

Def excited to see this one! I always thought that those two ladies looked a lot alike…wondering if that will play into the plot at all

They are in a movie together?? I started watching Friday Night Lights last week and thought that Minka was Leighton for the first few minutes. they look freakin identical

Their resemblance is uncanny! If the people who put this together don’t make a reference to that, they’re missing a major opportunity!

Although i think Hollywood is running out on new and fresh ideas, I have to admit this movie looks promising… Lets hope it keep up with the hype.

i love leighton meester but i’m not a huge minka kelly fan. I love Friday night lights but she is my least favorite, in my opinion she never convinces me of her character in anything i’ve seen her in. I don’t like her acting at all but i’m def gonna see it because it looks good and hopefully minka will prove me wrong :)

I think it is interesting that Leighton is now the “psycho” role. Originally when she was the first person cast, she was the roommate who gets stalked, not the one doing the stalking. From BuzzSugar in March: “Looks like Gossip Girl’s beautiful baddie, Leighton Meester, is graduating from TV to film for a role in the thriller The Roommate. Meester will play Sara, “a college student who is randomly assigned to a freshman dorm with a stranger named Rebecca. Things turn deadly when Rebecca becomes obsessed and begins targeting people in Sara’s life.” I think it is a good career move to the be one to be crazy, those roles are always more fun!

I think I should move to Hollywood since they recycle old movies into new ones with the same old patterns and other shizz… I mean, are they really running out of ideas? C’mon now. And ew, I remember watching Single White Female 2… sick!
