Idol is over for me. Ellen , really, Ellen. She has no business judging idol, it is an insult to the other Judges, who are in the music business. Good for Simon for announcing he is leaving and abandoning the sinking ship. He should not be sharing the judges table with Ellen. One more reason to not watch: I am pretty sure that Ellen will at some point get up and do her ridiculous creepy little dance moves. I loathe dancing Ellen.

I can’t wait to see Ellen on AI! I’ve watched every season from start to finish and I’ve always hated listening to Paula. My dreams came true when she left! On a side note, Shelly must not have watched the finale this past season when Kara came out on stage and completely showed “Bikini Girl” up!!

Woah!! AI totally lucked out. I didn’t think it was possible for them to find a “good” replacement for Paula. Hiring Ellen will rejuvenate this aging show.
Ellen may not be a professional singer, but I think she probably has a good ear for talent. She’ll fill the “Ms. I’m-too-Nice” role quite well. I don’t know why people are criticizing Ellen for not being a singer. Paula Abdul is not a singer either… she is an ENTERTAINER (like Ellen).
People are saying that Ellen won’t offer constructive criticism. I never knew that Paula offered constructive criticism. At least we’ll be able to understand what Ellen says.

@ Taylor – That’s what I think too. She is an experianced entertainer, and afterall the winner of AI is going to be thrust into the entertainment industry which is something she knows a thing or two about.

I was dumbfounded when I heard this news yesterday night. Stunned. I thought it was so odd when I first found out, but now that I’ve been thinking about it I think Ellen will be a wonderful addition to American Idol. She’ll definitely make it more lively and she’ll save it from the monotony that often plagues the show. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that I love her as does everybody else!

I love Ellen but I’m not sure I like the idea of her judging permanently on AI. She guest judged on So You Think You Can Dance and it was almost painful to watch. The jokes weren’t working and she her comments dragged on. If she can be a little more serious it might work, I just don’t think I could watch her every night on AI if it’s constant jokes and forced audience laughter.
I do love her though – I watch her show everyday so I hope it all works out…

I totally love Ellen as well but I’m not sure. I think it’s a genius move, yes, but at the same time I think it’ll be kind of off-balanced. Her and Simon may potentially go sour. They definitely shouldn’t sit by each other. Also, I think she’ll make too many jokes but who knows. I guess we’ll see, right? Paula really did screw herself over with this. Yikes.

I don’t like this so much. I LOVE Ellen don’t get me wrong but this just doesn’t sit well with me. The show sucks so hard at this point but now I’ll have to watch Ellen a few times. They might get me back.

@Michelle…at the end of the day, the show is NOT about finding finding musical talent, it’s about getting ratings. I think Ellen can help them do that.

Ellen is nice but it really sucks that none of the judges on American Idol can actually sing. And they’re judging a singing competition.

I LOVE Ellen, I really do but I do not see how her being a judge is going to help at all. She has no musical background, and while she has been in the entertainment industry for a long time, what is she going to be able to bring to the table as far as constructive criticism for those kids? Sure she will probably be the foil to Simon, but at the end of the day the show is about finding musical talent and I highly doubt she is able to spot something like that. And I did see her guest judging stint and it’s true she sat there and made jokes the whole time and didn’t seem to really know what to say as far as a critique… I LOVE watching her talk show but I haven’t watched a full season of AI in years and I think this season will be no different.

She can’t be worse than Paula, who also had little musical expertise. You don’t learn much about music by lip-synching to heavily doctored tracks that most likely bear little resemblance to what you actually sang (if you were even the one who sang them), which is all Paula had ever done.

If it weren’t for the addictions, I bet Paula would be great on SYTYCD. She does know plenty about that art form.

i think its great to have her. its good to have an outsiders point of view every once and awhile ya know?.. like when a singer as a note just a little off key…that none of us notice but the judges rip into them for it….Ellen…we’ll she’ll kinda be the voice for us i guess.

I think I may watch American Idol, just for the fact that Ellen will be a judge on there. I think she and Simon will get along fine, they can both give and take when it comes so insulting teasing. XD Anyways, sure she never had a music career. However, anyone that can hear can tell whether or not someone is good at singing. As it was also mentioned before, she can judge by how they entertain their audience while singing. While she does joke around a lot, I think she also tells it as it is. Meaning she will be nice, yet truthful with her advice for the contestants. I dunno, we will never know until it actually happens so, lets see how everything turns out then :)

This show isn’t broadcast on the radio. It’s on TV. That makes it more than a straight singing contest. Its also an entertainment performance show (how they look, move, and sound). Ellen is an experienced entertainer. She’ll have an eye for what works or doesn’t. The other judges can talk music style with the wannabes and Ellen can judge their overall performance strengths (or weaknesses) as performers.

This is stroke of genius for AI. Ellen can bring a new audience curious to check her out judging skills and gives AI a much needed freshness for the season. I wonder how Ellen and Simon will get on? Poor Paula though. I fear she did really mess up a good thing.

I love me some Ellen but I do not think that she should be judging a singing contest… Maybe do a bit on Americas Got Talent but not AI :-/

You are right, though. She’s definitely got the mindset to replace Paula as the nice one but let’s just hope that she’s not tone-deaf.

Agreed Laura, she was awful on So You Think You Can Dance. She makes the perfect guest judge, but a permanent seat??? I don’t know how much of her knock-knock joke shtick I can handle for an entire season. I don’t think she will mesh well with Simon either. Honestly, she’s just a great candidate for having her own show with her own rules, I don’t think she will work well with others.

I love Ellen, but like laura said…she was HORRIBLE on SYTYCD. Her lame jokes were cute for about two seconds, but then it just felt like she was wasting time with her completely unhelpful comments.

Granted she has no musical background, but does it really matter? Randy and Paula have a ton, and they are/were useless. I’m very excited to see Ellen, and I don’t think she’s going to to try to make a joke for every comment she has. She will def be funny, but only to an extent.

Hmmm, I will reserve judgment on this one until I actually see her on AI. My inclination is to say no, b/c it seems weird to me to have a judge with no musical background on a singing competition but I do love Ellen so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

@wallflower yes she has no musical background but she even said herself that she can offer an outsiders point of view having not had a musical background. she can see from a different point of view like if she’d buy the record and what we as listeners would support.
