Adam ‘DJ AM’ Goldstein’s Death Ruled An Accident

Cocaine + OxyContin + Vicodin + Xanax + Ativan, etc. = Acute Intoxication
September 29th, 2009

The New York medical examiner’s office released its official findings in the death of Adam DJ AM Goldstein, who passed away one month ago, and ruled that he passed away due to accidental drug overdose. Apparently, AM had quite a bit of controlled substances in his system and died as a result of the deadly cocktail of substances he ingested:

DJ AM died accidentally from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs and cocaine, the medical examiner’s office ruled Tuesday. The toxicology report showed the 36-year-old had in his system cocaine, OxyContin, Hydrocodone or Vicodin, antianxiety drugs Xanax and Ativan, Klonopin which also controls anger, Benadryl, and Levamisole, a drug apparently used to cut cocaine. The cause of death was acute intoxication due to the combined effects the drugs, the medical examiner’s office said. The dosage of each drug was not released. The celebrity, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had openly discussed past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs. He was found Aug. 28 in his apartment in New York City’s trendy SoHo neighborhood after a friend called 911. Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweat pants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m. Six pills were found in his stomach and a pill in his throat when he was found dead in his apartment. The pill in his throat appeared to be OxyContin. A crack pipe and prescription pill bottles were discovered there.

While I’m not trying to sound harsh or cruel, I guess I’m having a hard time understanding how someone who takes so many drugs in a relatively short period of time and then dies from their effects is considered an “accident”. Sure, the intent was not to kill one’s self but if someone actively drinks a can of gasoline and doesn’t want to die but does die, is that an accident, too? Semantics aside, AM’s untimely death is a true tragedy and I hope that he is finally at peace wherever he may be. It’s clear he was suffering in the grips of addiction and sadness … it’s just a shame that he had to pay with his life in the sad end :(

I also have trouble thinking of his death as an accident when they find six pills in his stomach, one in his throat, a crack pipe and pill bottles next to the bed, and all those different substances in his body… He must have known it would be deadly???

  2. Margie Says:

I agree with you Trent. It seems like he knew what he was doing but did he? I dunno. RIP

  3. Ally Says:

You never know if what you read is true, but there were also reports that he had pretty much barricaded himself in so no one could stop him. That doesn’t exactly seem accidental. Either way it is very sad though :(.

  4. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

I totally agree but at least it will say accident. I think in the end that won’t tarnish his name. It is still really sad!

I suppose it’s one of those things we are simply never going to know. Even though evidence does point one way, I do not want to be the person making the assumption that this was meditated and carried out successfully in the manner he wanted. It’s horrible to think that someone would want to not be here so badly they would resort to pumping their body full of pills, but alas it’s something we are never really going to know. I am at peace in the thinking that maybe he just wanted to take the pain away for awhile and didn’t realize that he was giving himself too much.

@ Michelle- I agree completely with what you wrote. Nicely said.

  8. SuziLee Says:

I feel the same way – is it really an accident when you take that many drugs & that many different drugs at one time? Ya gotta know that can not be good for you. I guess unless there is a suicide note, or someone notified that it is a true suicide, it’s considered an “accidental overdose”. I wish that he and others who this happens to, would reach out for help. Hell – just tweet Dr Drew!!! : ) All kidding aside, it’s a sad loss. Gone too soon….

  9. nae Says:

i agree w/ the others – i have a hard time seeing this as an accident as well…..just something we’ll never know. what a terrible loss :(

  10. Newt Says:

I thought the same thing when I read the story. How is it not suicide when you take that many drugs at one time? It’s a horrible loss in any regard.

  11. Tracy Says:

If you take 6 oxycontin 80’s, that’s suicide. It’s sad but true. I don’t understand the accident ruling.

  12. Laura Says:

I agree–When you do something like that, you have to know there can and/or will be consequences. I’ve never done a drug in my life, but I’m smart enough to know you can’t go mixing every medication in the book. It may be harsh, but the cause of death should be ruled Acute Stupidity.

  13. Z Says:

If you are not in physical pain, you shouldn’t take painkillers because the key word here is “killers”.

  14. greer Says:

its not like there was 50 pills in his stomach…how do you think accidental drug overdoses happen at all? it happens like that heaps something somebody takes one day can the next due to varying factors kill someone…for a habitual drug user its not such an outrageous amount as you may think…i think its entirely plausible that he took them fully intending to wake up the next day, therefore making it an accident.

  15. PixiesBassline Says:

Who places mirrors in front of their front door and bedroom door before they “accidentally” overdose?

  16. kellye Says:

You have to keep in mind that the death certificate will be used to disperse life insurance policies. Many of those do not pay out if the death is ruled a suicide.

  17. Ella Says:

When someone is addicted to drugs, they may easily take too many by accident. You’re used to taking a lot of drugs, and you’re used to mixing them. You have a high tolerance. You’ve done similar things before and gotten away with it. Anyway, I think that unless it’s absolutely certain that it’s a suicide, it’s better to just rule it an accident. Easier on the families.

  23. Melanie Says:

I do not agree that an addict when taking many different drugs is trying to kill him/her self. As a previous addict to crack cocaine myself, I can tell you all you want as an addict is it to get back to that first high, first hit, the first time you experienced that high, the first day you realized that the pain goes away if I just do this. I am not saying its right to hide in drugs to avoid your problems but remember everyone: addiction is a disease and as with many other diseases addiction kills. Whether its the first time you have used or the 900th time you are always taking that chance that the 1st/900th may be your last. Let us remember him for what he did and in the end the people he tried to reach out and help. And by the way the mirrors were in front of the doors I’m sure due to paranoia which from past experience is extremely intense when high on crack. God Bless him and may he rest in peace and finally be free of his addiction.

it’s just sad because just about 2 months before his death he did this intervention with this young kid that was a addict. he seemed to be doing ok then. it’s just so sad.
