President Barack Obama Inspires Fun New Artwork

Yes We Unicorn
Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Pop culture artist Dan Lacey has been inspired by US President Barack Obama to create a series of paintings that show our nation’s leader engaged in various fantastical acts which include saving Wall Street, saving impaired airplanes and riding unicorns … like this painting, for example:

When I first saw this painting of President Obama astride a mythical unicorn, I was reminded of the fun graphic that was created by THIS site (which features lots of NIN/Reznor inspired artwork) of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor riding on a unicorn of his own:

There seems to a growing trend of incorporating unicorns in fun artwork like this … a trend that I endorse and support wholeheartedly. After the jump, check out a few more pieces of Lacey’s Obama artwork — trust me, it’s not to be missed …

It ain't no thang
Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Last week she was giving birth to baby #2, this week Nicole Richie is out and about on the streets of SoCal carrying around baby #1 … behold:

Yesterday we saw new photos of new dad Joel Madden out and about for the first time since his son Sparrow James Midnight was born last week and earlier today we saw a few more … but I did not expect that we’d be seeing Nicole out and about so soon after giving birth … and shopping in Beverly Hills, CA no less! Clearly, Nicole as got the whole giving birth thing down … she pops ‘em out and gets right back to her routine. I’m dying at how cute Harlow Winter is … Nic/Joel make some cute babies. I cannot WAIT to see the fruits of their latest labor.

‘Spider-Man IV’ Hits Theaters In 2011

Bring on the Carnage
Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Good/Bad news (depending on your perspective) Spidey fans … according to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures has announced that they will be releasing the 4th Spider-Man film in May 2011. Altho much of the casting has yet to be determined, Sony seems confident that they’ll have a new Spider-Man movie ready to hit IMAX theaters in about 19 months:

In less than 19 months, Spidey again will be slinging webs around Imax theaters. Sony said Tuesday that “Spider-Man 4″ will be released in Imax’s specialty venues simultaneously with the comic book actioner’s worldwide bow in conventional venues on Thursday, May 6, 2011. The scheduled opening gives the film a one-day jump on the first frame of the 2011 summer boxoffice season. Imax also participated in the theatrical release of the past two “Spider-Man” pics. “The ‘Spider-Man’ franchise has been so important to the growth of our network and fan base over the years,” Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster said.

I know many fans, me included, are worried about this 4th installment of the Spider-Man franchise. Not only was the 3rd Spidey film not so great but Sony seems to be piecing this film together just to milk some more $$$ out of the franchise. I suppose if they manage to get all of the important castmembers back on board and if they produce a killer script then Spider-Man IV could be a great addition to the franchise … but that’s a lotta “ifs” for a movie banking on a box office hit. I guess we shall see.

Is Jason Trawick Creepin’ Around With Another Woman?

Um, does Britney Spears know about this?
Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Uh oh … potential sad news for Britney Spears. While our dear Britney is bizzy touring North America on the latest leg of her concert tour The Circus starring Britney Spears, her agent and rumored boyfriend Jason Trawick was spotted in the close company of another woman in Las Vegas, NV last week! Does Britney know? Is Britwick dunzo??? Courtesy of Life & Style magazine, here is the reported proof that Jason has been creepin’ around with another woman:

While Britney Spears, 27, has been throwing herself into work and family time since her split with longtime agent Jason Trawick, Jason appears to be focusing all of his energy on a new blonde beauty. “He was with a new woman outside Bally’s casino in Las Vegas on Sept. 7,” an eyewitness tells Life & Style. “They seemed to be having a great time and were relaxed around each other, holding hands as they walked down the strip. They even kissed once or twice.” Jason, 37, was very attentive to his new gal pal. “He asked if she was having a good time, and she responded, ‘Of course,’ and she smiled at him,” says the witness. And Jason clearly has a type. “The mystery woman had blond hair and was wearing a green dress and sunglasses,” says the witness. “She looked very similar to Britney!”

Seriously, WTF?? Okay … granted we can’t really tell if this is actually Jason Trawick in the photo but … if it is, this new chick better be his sister or his cousin or something! I will be PISSED if he is doing Britney wrong like this. Last month we started hearing rumors that Britwick were dunzo but those rumors were brutally rebuffed by a report that claimed the couple were still going strong. I sincerely hope that either this L&S report is wrong or that there is some sort of misunderstanding. I want Britwick to LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER! Boooooo. What do y’all think … is Jason creepin’ around behind Britney’s back?

Last night I had the great pleasure of seeing what is arguably William Shakespeare’s most famous play (with the most well known quotes), Hamlet, live on the Broadway stage … starring Jude Law. Hamlet is one of my favorite plays and I have seen many productions/incarnations of the tale. My two favorites are Kenneth Branaugh’s 4-hour epic movie and, if you can believe it, Ethan Hawke’s modern retelling set in NYC. Last year I saw and LOVED the Broadway production of MacBeth which starred Patrick Stewart so I had high hopes that Jude Law’s Hamlet would be just as good. I am happy to report that the this production of the play is fantastic:

Right off the bat, I loved the sparse staging of the show. The props are kept to a minimum and the set is one big, high-walled room in castle Elsinore … the starkness of the space with the effective use of light really made for an excellent setting for the play. Jude Law’s Hamlet was very emo … right down to the emo sweater he wore. The costuming was modern but the tone of the setting still had an old feeling to it. Jude really loses himself in the moody role of Hamlet … he paces around in mad fashion, pulling at his hair at odd times … wringing his hands in a minorly insane way — he really puts on a great performance. For much of the 2 1/2 hour play, the audience was held in rapt silence … the play is really very engrossing. There are many great scenes in Hamlet but in this production, I really enjoyed the burial of Ophelia scene … the one with the famous line, Alas poor Yorick, I knew him Horatio. There is also an effective use of falling snow in the To be, or not to be scene that really captures the sad spirit of this tragic play. I am so happy I got to see this production of the play, it’s really not to be missed. Fans of Shakespeare should deffo see this production … I loved it!!

I have to give a shout-out to Pink reader Barrie who I met before the show last night … it was my pleasure meeting you :)

After the performance was finished, I met up with my good friend Tom Lenk for a late-night supper at Sardi’s. As I mentioned previously, Tom will be joining the Broadway cast of Rock of Ages this week and we met up to catch up and talk about how crazy his life has been for the past two weeks. Dinner was superb and it was really great seeing him look so well. He is so ready for his Broadway debut, I cannot WAIT to see him!! David and I will be attending Friday night’s performance of Rock of Ages — which will be the first for new castmembers Tom Lenk (as Franz) and Kerry Butler (as Sherrie). I LOOOOOOVE Kerry Butler, she was the lead in Xanadu and she will make an excellent lead for RoA. Sooooo excited for Friday!!

This afternoon, David and I are meeting up with our dear friends Sashie and Will so that we can meet their newborn baby boy Jasper. Of all the fun things I’ve scheduled for this NYC trip, meeting little Jasper is by far my fave. I hope to have pics to share soon!!
