Patrick Swayze Passes Away At 57

Actor loses his long battle with cancer
Monday, September 14th, 2009

Very sad news to pass along … Patrick Swayze, who has been battling pancreatic cancer for the past year or so, finally succumbed to the illness. You may recall that Swayze was admitted to the hospital last January after he contracted pneumonia and it was believed then that he had a short time to liveSwayze ended up beating the odds and fought back to relative health in the weeks after he was admitted to the hospital. Sadly, his long fight with cancer came to and end Monday when he finally lost the battle … he was 57 years old:

Patrick Swayze, the balletically athletic actor who rose to stardom in the films “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” and whose 20-month battle with advanced pancreatic cancer drew wide attention, died Monday. He was 57. His publicist, Annett Wolf, told The Associated Press in Los Angeles that Mr. Swayze had died with family members at his side. Mr. Swayze’s cancer was diagnosed in January 2008. Six months later he had already outlived his prognosis and was filmed at an airport, smiling at photographers and calling himself, only half-facetiously, “a miracle dude.” He even went through with plans to star in “The Beast,” a drama series for A&E. He filmed a complete season while undergoing treatment. Mr. Swayze insisted on continuing with the series. “How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man?” he told The New York Times last October. “You go to work” … A week before the series began, Mr. Swayze was the subject of a one-hour “Barbara Walters Special” on ABC, in which he talked about his illness. “I keep my heart and my soul and my spirit open to miracles,” he told Ms. Walters. But he said he was not going to pursue every experimental treatment that came along. If he were to “spend so much time chasing staying alive,” he said, he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the time he had left. “I want to live,” he said. Shortly after the interview, he was hospitalized for pneumonia. At least one tabloid newspaper ran photographs of him in April with reports that the cancer had metastasized and that his weight had dropped to 105 pounds. Mr. Swayze rose to stardom in 1987. He had received attention in several early movies and in the mini-series “North and South,” but the coming-of-age film “Dirty Dancing” established him as a romantic leading man. He starred opposite Jennifer Grey as a young working-class dance instructor at a Catskills resort who proved to have more heart, integrity and sex appeal than many of the wealthy guests with whom he was forbidden to fraternize. He exhibited similar emotional intensity in the supernatural romance “Ghost” (1990), an enormous box-office hit. His character, a loft-living yuppie banker, is murdered early in the film and spends the rest of it as a spirit, desperately trying to communicate with his fiancée (Demi Moore) with the help of a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg). The film, which also showcased his physical grace, solidified his stardom. Mr. Swayze was proud of “Ghost,” as he told The San Francisco Chronicle in 1990. “I needed to do something that will affect the audience in a positive way, make them feel better about their lives and appreciate what they have,” he said. Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on Aug. 18, 1952, in Houston, the son of Jesse Wayne Swayze, an engineer and rodeo cowboy, and Patsy Swayze, a dance instructor and choreographer. He began dancing as a child and was often teased about it. But he was also a student athlete, and his dancing career was hampered by a football injury … He made his screen debut in “Skatetown, U.S.A.” (1979), a roller-disco movie starring Scott Baio. Looking back on that film, he told the Toronto newspaper The Globe and Mail in 1984, “I saw that with not too much trouble I could become a teenybopper star, but I knew if I accepted that, it would take years to win credibility as a serious actor.” His first notable film was “The Outsiders” (1983), a drama about teenage gangs that starred other newcomers like Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez. The same year he was cast in a short-lived television series, “Renegades,” a sort of updated “Mod Squad” about young gang leaders turned deputies … After that came “Dirty Dancing” and then, just three years later, “Ghost,” with a few largely forgotten movies in between. During the 1990s he was a bank-robbing surfer in “Point Break” (1991) and a drag queen with the daunting name Vida Boheme in “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar” (1995). “To Wong Foo” earned him his third Golden Globe nomination. (The others were for “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost.”) … From 1995 to 2007 he made more than a dozen feature films, including “Donnie Darko” (2001), in which he played an obnoxious motivational speaker. In 2006 he surprised many by starring in London as the streetwise gambler Nathan Detroit in the musical “Guys and Dolls.” His last film was “Powder Blue,” a drama with Lisa Kudrow that was released on DVD this year. As a young unknown, Mr. Swayze met Lisa Niemi, a fellow Houstonian, in one of his mother’s dance classes. They married in 1975. She survives him, along with his mother; two brothers, Don and Sean; and a sister, Bambi. Another sister, Vicky, died in 1994.

Patrick Swayze will be remembered most for his role in Dirty Dancing, IMHO, the film that made him a major star. He was beloved by many and respected by many more for his willingness to face his cancer battle with a strong will to live. There is no doubt that Swayze did not go down without a fight and he will be sorely missed by all. At last, his arduous and painful battle with the disease that sought to ravage him is over. My love, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and my sincerest wish is that he will rest in eternal peace.

Ed Westwick Gets A Couple Of FUGLY New Tattoos

Worst.Tattoos.EVER.
Monday, September 14th, 2009

UGH! Shield thine eyes, Gossip Girl/Ed Westwick fans cuz I’ve got some really bad news for you. It turns out that Mr. Westwick decided to get some new ink added to his body and commissioned TWO new tattoos to be etched into his skin. First up, check out this horrid-looking tattoo of a bird feather (pigeon?) inked onto the back of his left arm:

I mean … wow. I don’t know WTF? got into him to think that this tattoo was a good idea but … yeah … there you have it. BUT, it gets worse. Ed got another fairly large-sized tattoo inked onto the front of his right arm … I suppose I should warn that it is technically NSFW but since it’s a tattoo, it’s not really that explicit. Curious? Check it out, after the jump …

Mario Lopez Is A Triathlete

Mari-yummo!
Monday, September 14th, 2009

Here are a few photos of Mario Lopez at the 23rd Annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon in Malibu, CA yesterday lookin’ hot, sweaty and mostly nekkid … behold:

I understand that there were other celebrities who competed in the triathlon yesterday but none of them looked as good as Mario, so they didn’t make the cut here on the blog. To be 100% completely honest, I don’t really pay attention to sporting events like these … but sometimes, the photos are fun to look at. Won’t you enjoy them with me?

Jude Law Gets Animatedly Chatty In NYC

The calling
Monday, September 14th, 2009

Here are a few fun photos of Jude Law chatting animatedly on his cell phone here in NYC this weekend … tho, it’s impossible to tell who he was talking to. I suppose it’s possible he was talking with his new babymama whatever her name is or he could’ve been chattin’ with one of his homeboys, Robert Downey, Jr. or Guy Ritchie. Whoever he was talkin’ to, it looks like he was really engaged in the convo:

Jude will be spending a lot of time here in NYC for the next couple of months, he begins previews of Hamlet on Broadway this week. Lucky me, I’ll be seeing him in Hamlet on Wednesday night … perhaps he heard about the fact that I’m coming and he had to excitedly call of his friends?! Whatever the case may be … I know I’m excited to see him on stage!

She By Shereé Finally Shows . . . At New York Fashion Week

Who gon' check me, boo?
Monday, September 14th, 2009

Fans of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are well aware that housewife Shereé Whitfield tried to launch her clothing line She By Shereé on the show last season but because of the fact that she had no clothes to show, the line failed to launch. A year later, Whitfield finally got her shizz together and managed to pull off a fashion show for She By Shereé here at New York Fashion Week yesterday … and Marc Malkin from E! News was lucky enough to attend. Here are a few photos of Shereé at her event yesterday and Malkin’s take on the show:

Sheree Whitfield wasn’t the only star of the Real Housewives of Atlanta people were hoping to see earlier today at the She by Sheree fashion collection presentation in New York City. But none were to be found. After chatting with Sheree backstage, it’s pretty clear why the other wives were no-shows… Sheree doesn’t really hang much these days with fellow Housewives NeNe, Kim, Lisa or Kandi. “It’s just a working relationship,” Sheree explained. “We all have our different things that we’re doing. We’re not friends, but we are cordial.” Now, with the day’s event behind her, Sheree was hoping for some lovin’. “I’ve really been focusing in on this,” she said. “I haven’t had time to go out and for dating. I’ve been working so hard, but now that it’s over I may go find myself a date tonight.” She was quick to add, “I’m not looking, but if someone comes around tonight, that would be great.” Who was at Sheree’s fashion debut? Sex and the City director Michael Patrick King and Adam Glassman, creative director of O, The Oprah Magazine. No word if Carrie Bradshaw or Ms. Winfrey have any plans to slip into some She by Sheree originals.

You know, I like Shereé on the show … but these clothes are a HOT MESS. It’s a shame that even after all this time she couldn’t come up with one decent design. I really wanted to be impressed … but I guess it goes to show that you cannot be a successful designer overnight — and just because you say so. After the jump, check out some of the She by Shereé designs that walked the runway yesterday morning …

My View Of The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

The TV Guide
Monday, September 14th, 2009

To wrap up the day’s coverage of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, let me share some of my personal photos and experiences from the show last night. As always, the folks at MTV were amazingly good to me and got me a great spot on the red carpet to cover arrivals and then got me access to watch the show in person. The whole night was a lot of fun but I have to confess, I almost missed out on the entire thing!

For some ungodly reason, I was not able to get a cab when I needed to get to Radio City Music Hall and because press check-in cuts off PERIOD at a specific time, I had to scramble to get to the venue on time. I managed to find the right subway line to get me to Radio City and then was forced to run around the block 4 TIMES to find the right press check-in venue. I was told the wrong thing over and over and at the last minute, an amazing intern named Tyler found me and brought me inside … with 2 minutes to spare. Once I got all checked-in, it was smooth sailing for the rest of the night. After the jump, check out some of my photos from the red carpet and a couple from inside the show …
