The Turtle Party: Book Club Comes Into Being

The TV Guide
August 5th, 2009

Yesterday afternoon David and I got to spend a few fun hours with our dear friend Marissa who was flying from NYC to Hawaii and had a long layover here in LA … we picked her up, got our asses to Chick-Fil-A and had a grand ol’ time:

We’re hoping to see her when we get back east to NYC next month … but it was so fun getting to hang out with her for a short while yesterday :)

Last night I met up with Tamar, Ollie, Caleb, Andy and Jason at Tam’s place for the inaugural meeting of The Turtle Party: Book Club. After our first order of biz (to name the club) was completed, we got to the matter of selecting the book. I came prepared with 4 options and we all decided to go with Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett:

I was the only person to have read the book before and I am more than happy to read it again. After we finish this book, another person will over a selection of titles for us to agree on and we go from there. Here is the first photo of our book club:

Little Miss Lola, the pooch, is our book club mascot … Ollie is working on our secret handshake. We’ve decided to create a website for the book club and a Twitter account can be found HERE if any of y’all wanna follow along. I’m not entirely sure how we’ll be able to integrate those of you out there interested in reading along but … we’re gonna do our best to accommodate all y’all if possible :) If you have any feedback or suggestions, please send them along. We’ll be meeting on the first and third Tuesday of every month … it should be very fun :)

I’m not sure what is going on this evening but I’ve got some reading to do. I’m hoping to finish Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and then moving on to The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold … and, of course, Good Omens. So much reading … I love it!!

I also have to announce that today is my goddaughter Zakiya’s 4th birthday!!

Can you believe that little Princess Z is already a 4 year old kid?! OY!! I’m looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her when I am home in Detroit this weekend. But please join me in sending lots of Birthday Lurve to Zakiya today! xo

  19. Jaime Burke Says:

    Trent,

First, I loved “Good Omens”. May I recommend for your next selection “Forever” by Pete Hamill? I think you might enjoy this book. It was the first book I ever read that made me NOT want to be immortal.

It’s an historical look at NYC through the eyes of one man. It starts in Ireland 300+ years ago and goes up to 9/11/2001. It’s fu*#ing brilliant!

  20. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Jaime Burke — Thanks for the rec! I’ll pick it up ;) xoxo

  21. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Liza — Not yet but I hope to before the movie comes out :)

  22. Andy Says:

That is so random… I had a B&N giftcard from Father’s Day left to spend, and I picked up Good Omen’s yesterday and started reading it. Maybe that’s a good omen itself. Read American God’s or Anasasi’s Boys for more Neil Gaiman goodness. You can totally see where Crowley came from.

  23. Leslie Says:

    Happy Birthday Princess Z!

  24. Winona Says:

    Happy 4th birthday, Princess Z!!!!!

  25. Nicole Says:

    Hey Trent!
    -
Here’s hoping you check threads from time to time – especially when no-one is posting anymore because I don’t know else to find out if you read older books or not. Like, from 1989 or not…
    -
I tried emailing you a few weeks ago re: 2 books I read {& if you’d read them yourself} & never received a reply – perhaps it never got to you or you receive so many that there’s no way to respond to them all & still have a life. LOL
    -
So, I’ll try again & check back later. “Lovely Bones” has a theme of the afterlife in which the dead girl can speak for herself (”living”, so to speak) throughout. Anyway, it reminded me of 1 of the books I tried drawing your attention to previously. It was published in 1989 by Meadowland Books & is called: “Some Lovely Image” by Lawrence Quirk… I really urge to read it. It’s absolutely wonderful!
    -
The other book: “dream boy” by Jim Grimsley is a Scribner Paperback Fiction published 1997 {by arrangement} with Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill {copyrighted 1995}.
    -
I really hope you give them a try let others know about them.
    -
    Take care!
