Sick & Tired
The TV Guide

Blah. I spent all of yesterday holed up here in our place because I wasn’t feelin’ too hot. I’m not ready to use the “s” word just yet but suffice to say, I was in no condition to go out and hang out with anyone. Instead, I stayed in and finished reading Harry Potter and the Philsopher’s Stone and started reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

Reading the Harry Potter books again, after reading them all and knowing how the whole saga ends, gives new meaning to a lot of the events in the earlier books. I’m just amazed at JK Rowling‘s genius. She had a plan from the beginning and orchestrated the HP book series masterfully. I cannot find one inconsistency … well, except for the fact that in Book 1, Hagrid tells Dumbledore and McGonagall that he borrowed the motorcycle he used to deliver baby Harry Potter to the Dursley’s home from Sirius Black. Unless Hagrid borrowed his cycle before Sirius was imprisoned in Azkaban, this little plot point doesn’t work … or does it? To be honest, it’s the only thing that made me think whether or not it fit in with the rest of HP lore.

That’s pretty much it … I didn’t do much else … but go to bed early and sleep late. I’m feeling better today, I have some errands to take care of and a piece of crap BlackBerry to replace so I’ll deffo be heading out shortly. Darion wanted to get some people out for a movie later, I’m gonna try and do that too. Hope all y’all’s weekends have been more exciting than mine ;)

I don’t think Sirius was in Azkaban until after the Potters were murdered so it was entirely possible for Hagrid to get the bike from Black.

  2. Johanna says:

I read somewhere that Rowling got an answer about that. If I remember correctly she said that Hagrid borrowed the bike from Sirius before they thought that Sirius was involved with the killings…

  3. G says:

yea i agree with johanna. i dont think he was caught till a little after harry was given to the dursley’s, and sirius was james potter’s best friend, so he would help hagrid save harry.

also, i love the adult book covers of harry potter hahaha.. made it less embarrassing when i had to bring the last book to work when it first came out haha

  4. Dana says:

I just started reading the books…after I saw the newest movie, I need to read the books before the next movie.

  5. Iris says:

In the third book Hagrid explains in the hogs head that Sirius gave the bike to him when he learned that hagrid was going to deliever harry to dumbledore. It was before he went to hunt down wormtail.

  6. maggie says:

It actually makes sense, you’ll find out later! It’s amazing to think about how she had the last chapter of the last book written so long ago!

  7. Iris says:

The only one inconsistency that irked me was in the seventh book when Ron was able to speak parselmouth and open the camber of secrets….-_-……yeah if wizards were able to learn parselmouth (sp?) it wouldn’t have been such a shock that harry could in the second book. and thats my two cents :)

  8. JasminR says:

Sirius had gone to the Potters’ home and found it destroyed with Hagrid about to take Harry to Dumbledore. He wanted to take Harry because he was his godfather but Hagrid said he couldn’t give Harry to him. So Sirius told him to take his bike, as he would not need it anymore.

  9. JasminR says:

Also, in response to Iris, Ron did not learn parselmouth. He was merely able to minic the 1 word. For example, I could probably learn 1 word in another language by just mimcking the sounds. But I wouldn’t know the entire language.

  10. Aislin says:

The whole sirius/wormtail/murders saga happened after Sirius tracked down wormtail, and thus he lent the bike to Hagrid before he set off

  11. Jenn says:

What’s wrong with your blackberry? Don’t you have the bold? Mine’s a piece of crap too…

  12. K says:

I just started rereading the series also! It’s my 3rd or 4th time (maybe I shouldn’t admit that lol). They get better every time! Enjoy!

  13. Chris says:

Um, Sirius wasn’t arrested until AFTER Lily and James were murdered because he was captured for chasing down WORMTAIL screaming at him at how he could have betrayed lily and james. Why do you think wormtail went into hiding?

  14. Green Is Good says:

Trent, where did you get these editions of Harry Potter? I really like these covers so much better! They’re cool.

  15. leanne says:

yeah sirius goes to the potter house and is a mess, lends hagrid the motorbike then sets off in revenge – knowing pettigrew was ot blame
    :)

    love yr blog trent!

  16. brooke says:

I noticed that plont point as well when I reread them and it does fit! You will see when you reread the third that Hagrid mentions seeing him at the house right after Harry’s parents were killed.

  17. erin says:

I’ve yet to read this series but if I can find the adult looking covers it should make it a little easier… :)

  18. Emma says:

sirius isn’t in azkaban the night hagrid collects Harry – Sirius goes to azkaban after confronting Pettigrew about conspirating with Voldemort and assisting in the murder of Lily & James. Thats why when sirius gives hagrid the bike he’s like ‘i dont need it anymore’

  19. Malia says:

FYI: Wizards don’t speak “parselmouth,” they speak “parseltongue.” And, if they can, they are called a “parselmouth.” Just thought you ought to know. Cheers!

And, those are the covers of the “adult” versions. You can buy them on Amazon… But, I must encourage the traditional covers. Mary GrandPré is an awesome illustrator, and they are classic book covers.

  20. Joan says:

Yes Trent, as other have said the night Harry’s parents were killed by Voldemort and the night Sirius gave his motorcycle to Hagrid (to take Harry into safety) are the same night.

**** When Sirius saw Godric’s Hollow was destroyed, he was in awe because he was the only one that knew (with the Potter) that their secret keeper was Wormtail. That must have mean that he was also the betrayer. Dumbledore send Hagrid to take Hagrid to the Dursleys and there was Sirius, who lend him his motorcycle. Then Sirius went after Wormtal … and after Wormtail’s disappearance (and the killing of 13 muggles) he framed Sirius. People blamed Sirius for the betrayal and the killings. Then, he was sent to Azkaban.

*****@Iris, JKR said that Ron didn’t actually spoke parseltongue in Book 7, but that he mimicked Harry doing that specific sound that opened the Chamber. Throughout Book 7 we get a bit of a taste of Ron’s ability at imitation. I know, still weak, a bit far-fetched, but that’s what she said. XD
