Paula Abdul Is NOT Returning To ‘American Idol’
Paula Abdul announced on her official Twitter profile last night that she will NOT be returning to the ratings hit reality series American Idol after WEEKS of public speculation about the terms of her contract with the show . In a string of announcement tweets last night, Paula broke the news that she is parting ways with the show … presumably after she and FOX (the network that produces the show) could not come to terms on her contract. FOX, for their part, released a statement wishing her “well” and squarely place the blame of her departure from the show on her shoulders. HMMM … there is something rotten, methinks, in the state of Denmark. Here are all of Paula’s tweets and the story about the whole sorry mess:

From Paula: With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to #IDOL … I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon … What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me … It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month … I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.
From People: Abdul — out! Ending speculation about her future on one of the most popular shows on television, Paula Abdul confirmed Tuesday she will no longer be at the judge’s table on American Idol … No reason was given for her departure just two days before she was to return to work. Abdul’s rep declined to comment except to confirm she was leaving. The highly rated show is about to begin taping segments for its ninth season, with auditions starting Thursday in Denver. The show returns on the air in January. “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show,” FOX TV says in a statement. “While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.” The announcement comes shortly after her manager angrily said there was no contract on the table and that “sadly” it didn’t appear she would be returning. Her previous contract ended after the eighth season. Her departure now returns the number of judges to three, with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson joined by Kara DioGuardi, who was just confirmed to be returning.
This is absolutely infuriating. I KNEW from the moment that AI thought it best to add a fourth judge, another female judge, that the time was running out for Paula Abdul on American Idol. I find it extremely difficult to believe that Paula just decided to quit this high profile job. There has to be more to the story. To be honest, I don’t watch the show … but when I did, I tuned in for Paula Abdul. She is a shining light of hope, optimism and joy on that wretched show. While Simon Cowell is tearing people down and Randy Jackson is saying Yo Dawg, yo dawg, yo dawg, Paula was cheering every contestant to victory. This development is a huge disappointment.

I’m actually glad.. I couldnt stand paula anymore.. it was just a slurring array of crazyness..

I want to slam Kara’s face into that desk. I seriously can’t stand her one bit.
I wonder if Idol’s ratings will suffer? My guess is not by much, at least at first. I DVR it and fast forward through Kara lol

@M_Deezy: I couldn’t agree more. I liked Paula at first, but over the past few years I’ve grown to dislike her on the show. She slurs so bad and most of what she says makes no sense whatsoever. Plus, all she did was praise everyone, even when they sucked horribly. At least Simon is truthful. Peace out, psychobabble Paula.

I won’t watch this show anymore! Paula was American Idol…yes she was annoying and incoherent at times but she really did help the overall moral compass of the judges! BOOOOO, what a shame!

Paula Abdul may have her faults, but American Idol would not be the same without her. The original 3 stooges are an integral part of the show. I don’t think the ratings will suffer at the beginning because I think people -out of curiosity- will tune in to see how it’s going to play out; but I sense an eventual slow decline in viewership.
Kara is a nice chick. She gives constructive criticism, but she’s not paula!!

Paula had 1 season of craziness what.. 2 years ago? Fking hell!
Anyway… Idol and Abdul are synonomous… I think Idols gonna just fade away here…

I fell in love season 1, and have watched this show since then…I do admit liking Paula in the beginning when it was purely a talent competition. As the stakes have gotten higher and the contestants become really pros looking for a second or third shot, I haven’t seen the need of the nurturing mother hen Paula provides. That said, I will miss her, but Gotta move forward. I think they should start bringing back former Idols (the successful ones ) as mentors and/or guest judges. They’ve been there and know what it’s like. Really Idol is not going to be around for too much longer.

Sure Paula is all sorts of bat shizz crazy, but she is an integral part of the show. I think the show will still be successful (’cause it’s a monster that can’t be stopped) but I can’t imagine enjoying Idol as much without Paula and her special brand of crazy.

don’t send her to SYTYCD!!!

I would take Paula over Kara any day but I will still watch. I wont watch when Simon Cowell is gone. and come on Trent? a “wretched show” you don’t even watch it….

I will not be watching Idol this year. I decided not to watch it anymore after Kris Allen won this year, but now that Paula is leaving I will definitely not be watching.

This sucks… I really have nothing against Kara but she doesn’t fit. And she just talks and talks and talks but never gets to a point. Not in the endearing way that Paula does though… *sigh* I think my time watching Idol is coming to an end. Last season was barely watchable for really a lot of the episodes. I liked Adam, though.

@anna — I don’t watch it because of its wretchedness, c’mon!

“slurring array of crazyness”…..that’s funny
August 5th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Trent, not to be mean, but you DON’T watch the show. If you did, you would realize that she rarely says anything constructive to the contestants. Kara is relevant in music today, Paula was 20 yeas ago.

I think the show will be a whoooooooole lot better without this whack job. I can barely stand to stay tune during her ‘critiques. And her stupid hardball tactics are just embarrassing. Good riddance.
August 5th, 2009 at 9:41 am
@Smoo — you’re not being mean, don’t apologize. From my perspective, the only good part of the show for me (as a non-watcher) was Paula. Without her, I have ZERO interest in even caring at all.

While its easy to agree that Paula’s choppy sentences and behavior often times was a little loopy – I have to disagree with some of the coments about her not being helpful -she definitely was. She didn’t express herself well but if you could catch was she was saying, it was often times right on. I think Simon gets into negative mode and she’s that balance. I don’t think that Kara (not yet anyway) has that ability -and what about that song she wrote – aweful! I am worried for Idol – this is a sign that things will ever be the same and I doubt it’s for the better.
August 5th, 2009 at 10:56 am
That makes sense Trent. I watched this season and I enjoyed Paula’s loopy meaningless comments.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:24 am
shining light of hope wtf?
she was a talent judge that didnt judge the talent because she was afraid to offend….. ANYONE… (or drunk/high)….
being paid for THAT is ludicrous… half the time she is barely coherent… she had her run and its time for her to fade into obscurity and full on drug addiction once she snags that one last project someone desperate will have piggy-backed onto her AI fame… after that she is d-o-n-e.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Some of these comments make me laugh! Even though Paula was a complete whack job who couldn’t complete most of her sentences, she was the backbone of American Idol. Simon criticizes 90% of the time because he’s hardly ever impressed. Randy is just annoying. Kara is just, well, Kara. But Paula actually stuck up for the contestants and stood up against the other judges as well! Paula DESERVES to be paid a significant amount. I know for a fact the show will go downhill (give it time) without Paula. People tuned in for Paula and they loved Paula and Simon bickering. I still believe that she’ll be on the show. No way will Simon have a show without Paula. And didn’t he say that if Paula ever quit he would quit as well? Ludicrous.

I used to watch AI and Paula was out of her cotton pickin’ mind. I knew they were attempting to ween the audience off of Paula and onto Kara. Really though does it matter whos a judge ? It’s totally fixed whos going and staying.American Idol is becoming a joke…Maybe Paula just escaped a sinking ship…
August 5th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
I watched American Idol, the first time it was ever on. After that, I didn’t even bother. It was just the same thing with different people. I mean really, the runner up always gets more success then the actual winner in the end.
I dunno, when it was new. It was awesome, but when its just a repeat with new members it gets annoying. Who knows, maybe once off this show Paula can concentrate on other things, or just take some time to relax and regain her thoughts and such.

All I have to say is that quitting a $3M a year job when they offered you more money seems pretty f***ing stupid to me. Yeah I get being mad that Ryan and Simon make more than you do, but crap quitting your job over twitter doesn’t seem like the brightest thing to do. Where does she think she’s going to make that kind of money now. Clearly no one was interested in her reality show or her last single.
Hey Simon, I need a job and I’m willing to work for half of that.
