James Cameron Releases A Teaser Trailer For ‘Avatar’
Happy 'Avatar' Day

Director James Cameron and 20th Century Fox have decided that today is Avatar Day — the day that the world gets its first real look at footage from the 3D action/adventure/fantasy movie Avatar due out in theaters on December 18. At IMAX theaters all around the country today, folks will be screening 10 minutes of the much hyped film but right now we get to check out a short teaser trailer that will give us all a taste of Cameron‘s new project. Here are a few screencaps from the Avatar teaser trailer:

Avatar takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, Avatar delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

To be entirely honest, I have no effing idea what this movie is about. At first, I confused it with the M. Night Shyamalan film Avatar: The Last Airbender but I believe that is an entirely different story altogether. As best I can put together, Avatar tells the tale of a paralyzed ex-Marine who gets put in the body of a hybrid creature that is half human half Na’vi on the seemingly primitive rain forest-like planet of Pandora … or something like that. Alls I really know is that Avatar is supposed to be the most amazing 3D movie ever made and promises to be the coolest movie ever seen. Yeah, we’ll see about that. After the jump, check out the teaser trailer in full and see for yourself …

Yeah, if anyone can enlighten me further on WTF? is going on, I’d be much obliged. The hype for this film is nuts, I just hope it kinda lives up to it. Based on the graphics in this trailer, I’m impressed thus far. Beowulf still stands as the coolest 3D IMAX movie I’ve ever seen, I’m curious to find out if Avatar will become my new fave. Are any of y’all excited for this film? Is it worth all the hype?

Hum…. Paralysed Marine get into the body of blue man native of Pandora to become a sort of spy. He’s going to discover that the blue people are a civilisation worth saving and will fight against his own, plus fall in love at the same time…. Plausible ?

    here’s the synposis i could find…

In a distant future, humanity discovers the planet ‘Alpha Centauri B-4′, and for those scientists and astronauts who’ve traversed the gulf between neighboring suns and arrived on its alien soil know it as ‘Pandora’. A world filled with an incredible diversity of beautiful and deadly ammonia-breathing lifeforms.

Its also a world that harbors treasures and resources almost beyond price. But just as the original Pandora’s Box wrought devastation on those who would use it for their own gain, so too this world may destroy not just the Pandorans home, but ours as well.

Avatar is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.

Yeah Trent, I was thinking “The Last Airbender” too. I wanna see both tho. I’m all about “event” films. Even if for the most part I’ve been disappointed ….Terminator, Watchmen, Hulk (got sucked into both of those stinkers), et al…

  6. Margie says:

I read Alpha-Centauri as SS Atari is mixed up and blind from Midnight Madness.

    Is it just me?

  7. Chivonne says:

Wtf I don’t get it but I MUST see it. I’m so in to 3D stuff now.
Actually, I want to see both Avatar movies because the Airbender one I quite liked when it was on tv. I’m such a nerd :/

  8. Virginia says:

From what I understand he doesn’t become a half human, half Pandoran. His mind gets put into the body of a Pandoran.

From what I can tell it’s going to be amazing. I can’t freakin wait.

  9. carrie says:

    it looks so pretty. :)

  10. BriK says:

i don’t get it but it looks SUPER entertaining!

  11. Trillian says:

It’s something that Cameron came up with years ago but the technology wasn’t there to create it. I think it will look a lot better in 3D because with those types of effects, the weird not real feeling of CG gets suspended because our mind is comprehending it as a real object. I don’t think I explained that quite well, but it will probably be amazing when it isn’t flat.

A lot of banking on this movie. Most of the hype has been in the nerd circles so I don’t know what will happen when it comes out.

  12. Darnit, I thought this was about the Avatar Aang movie. Haven’t heard of this Avatar film.

  13. dori says:

I don’t get it, but I will go see it because everybody else will, i am not a leader

  14. alicia says:

im way more excited the the last airbender

  15. tyler says:

I’m sorry but those blue creatures look eerily reminiscent of the the Gelflings in The Dark Crystal. *owning my dorkiness*

  16. velcrodots says:

James Cameron’s been working on it for 14 years, I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a ‘Chinese Democracy’. Ah well, it’s in good hands so I’m sure it’ll be good

  17. hannybanny says:

Oooh, @tyler, yes! I was wondering about the faint sense of deja vu as I watched the trailer.

    @katie, thanks for the synopsis!
