‘Interview With The Vampire’ Getting A Remake?
Starring Robert Downey, Jr?

Now that Vampires are all the rage these days, it appears that someone got the bright idea to delve back into The Vampire Chronicles series written by the amazing Anne Rice in order to remake the movie Interview with the Vampire. As some of you may be well aware, Interview (which was written in 1976) was made into a movie in 1994 and starred Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Kirsten Dunst as Claudia. In the wake of the success of Twilight, True Blood and (presumably) The Vampire Diaries, the plan is to bring Anne Rice‘s vampires back to the big screen. And get this … Robert Downey, Jr. is rumored to star as Lestat:

We’ve been scrambling all week to confirm the following report, especially since it came from a very reliable source and is insanely logical considering the popularity of vampires these days. I guess something good has come from the success of Twilight as Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that Universal Pictures is looking to restart Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, which tells the tale of the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort (through his narration), a nobleman-turned-vampire in the late 18th century. No word yet on how they plan on unrolling this franchise, but we did find out who they are talking with to replace Tom Cruise and Stuart Townsend. We have confirmed this afternoon that ROBERT DOWNEY JR. is in close talks to play the vampire Lestat in Universal Pictures’ The Vampire Chronicles, a newly rebooted franchise based on Anne Rice’s popular novels. Lestat appears as a major character in both motion picture adaptations of The Vampire Chronicles novels. In Neil Jordan’s 1994 film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, he is portrayed by Tom Cruise. In the 2002 film adaptation of Queen of the Damned, he is played by Stuart Townsend. The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels by Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman made into a vampire in the 18th century.

OOOOOOH I’m so on the fence about this. On the one hand, I love Anne Rice and pretty much all of her books. I’m a big fan of The Vampire Chronicles and have loved Interview with the Vampire for many, many years. When it was made into a movie, I was quite surprised at how much I liked the film. Mind you, it was made in the days before Tom Cruise went crazy and was still a respectable actor. Interview is one of my fave Brad Pitt films. The sequel, Queen of the Damned (starring Stuart Townsend as Lestat) was laughable. That it was Aaliyah‘s final film role is so tragic … mainly because the movie is not good at all. I kinda don’t want Hollywood to eff up Anne Rice‘s characters again … but the thought of RDJ as Lestat is VERY intriguing. I guess we should hold off on getting too excited until things are confirmed all around but … I dunno. I’d hate for Interview with the Vampire to be exploited just to cash in on the fervent vampire craze that is going on these days (after all, let’s not forget the TERRRRRRIBLE Broadway musical titled Lestat that seemingly opened and closed in the same week). If they do it, I hope they do it right.

UPDATE: In response to an inquiry made by a fan, Anne Rice herself has issued a statement on the rumors of this Interview remake:

I cannot confirm this story. The negotiations are entirely in the hands of my agents. I know they are always working on setting up my books with good motion picture prospects. But I do not have anything specific to say on the matter right now. I am optimistic that we will see good movies in the future based on the Vampire Chronicles. When I do have news to report, I will post it on my website. I thank you for your interest. I can certainly confirm that the film of Queen of the Damned was a terrible disappointment to me and to many of the readers. Thank you for your letter. Anne Rice.

No surprise here. Rice admitted back in the 90′s that she had no say in the casting of Tom Cruise as Lestat in the original film (tho, she did love his performance after the fact). I wonder if RDJ will speak on this matter in the days to come.

Ha ha ha! Nice poster, Trent!

  2. Katie says:

    Dear movie people,

Please DO NOT remake Interview with the Vampire for the simple reason that you could not top Kirsten Dunst as the scary, evil vampire child. I love Robert Downey, Jr, but please, leave Tom Cruise with at least one great performance in his repertoire. And this is my favorite of Brad Pitt’s roles. Don’t ruin it.

  3. unAnDi says:

Why in the world would you remake something that everyone loved the first time? Why even try to top it? And have they READ the freakin Chronicles? I mean, the first movie was fine, but they were so off track with QoftheD that I would be skeptical to even watch another based on her books. Rice is by far genius with details involved in her stories and to f it up is seriously disrespectful to her and her fans.
Lestat is meant to be young. Nuff said.
There are over a dozen of her books I would loooooooove to see on the screen (if true to her vision) so why not choose another? Memnoch the Devil would be a great one!

  4. Berny says:

It’s not just the fact that Lestat is meant to be young, but there has to be come kind of sleek, sexy, chiselled quality to him… He must look like some idealised Greek God sculpture. His face needs to be like marble, cold and beautiful.

In short, not Robert Downey Jr.

And yeah. Kinda sick of vampires already. Everything just reeks of “jumping on the bandwagon”.

  5. Danny says:

this is why I hate Hollywood, they can’t leave anything alone!!!!! I’m already mad they remade Nightmare on Elm Street because the first one was a good movie and I’m trying to reserve judgment on that but to remake one of my favorite films of all time is blasphemy! There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with the original and to remake it now is an insult to fans. I bet they would take all the homoeroticism out of it from the original and who could play Claudia better than Kirsten Dunst when she was a child? COME ON! There are how many graduates from film school each year and how many screenwriters living in LA, oh i don’t know 10,000 but Hollywood cannot take a chance on a new project but wants to keep remaking the same thing over and over and over again. Ridiculous!

  6. Jazz says:

I don’t think it’s a remake of IWTV, they are just continuing the series. Anyway, I don’t believe anything until it’s confirmed by a spokesperson.

  7. Meagan says:

Why would they remake this one that is such a classic?! Why wouldn’t they either re-do Queen of the Damned or try doing The Witching Hour the first time around??? I will never understand Hollywood and it’s obsession with fucking up great classics.

  8. Bbrassy says:

    NO. Hell no.

  9. Lulu says:

ugh. Not cool.. RDJ is great… but he is NO Lestat! ugh ugh ugh.

  10. whiskey says:

If they are going to start back with the Vampire Chronicles, they really need to start at the beginning. BUT – Lestat needs to be pretty…and I love the movie they did with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt!! :-( I think they should move on to other creatures…werewolves anyone?!

  11. Mandella says:

Scrap that idea! There’s no reason to remake that when she has so many other good books to make into movies. I know the vampire craze is coming back but why mess up an already great movie?

They really need to do TALE OF THE BODY THIEF (which I’ve always said was written like a movie script!)… and RDJ is no Lestat… Now Gaspard Ulliel who played in Hannibal Rising would be PERFECT as Lestat… Slap a blonde wig on him and some fake vampire teeth and nails, he’s Lestat! Dude even speaks (and is) French… And if they make another Marius, the guy who plays Lucious Malfoy (Jason Isaacs)… give him the Lucious wig and he’s Marius…

The Mayfair Witches would make for a good movie series too… but the ghosts and the Taltos stuff might freak people out haha..

  12. Trude says:

I seriously love RDJ, but not as Lestat. 1) Not blonde, and wouldn’t look good as a blonde (i.e. Cruise) and 2) Just a hair too old!

Great idea on the Witching Hour series – that I would totally see!!

  13. Tina says:

I would love to see Peter Facinelli as Lestat – but they don’t have to re-make Interview since that was Louie’s story. They should start with Vampire (just forget that Queen was ever made) and follow Lestat’s story. I have ALWAYS wanted that. Anne has to be involved though! I love RDJ but he is NOT Lestat. I guess it would be too soon for Peter, since he is in Twilight, but he looks a lot like Cruise but is better looking, plus very funny, and diverse as an actor!

  14. Kiara says:

@Kendra – Johnny Depp as Lestat? That would be sooooo awesome!!! :D

Kinda embarrassed to admit this, but from reading all these comments, it seems that I’m the only one who actually liked Queen Of The Damned!!! :S Lol…I think the rockin’ soundtrack had a lot to do with how much I like that movie though…guess I could call it a guilty pleasure? :)

  15. Sara says:

Why?! Why would they do such a thing. When I heard about the remake, I don’t know, I guess I was…iffy on the whole thing. Then when I saw it was going to be RDJ I hated the idea! No, he is not Lestat. I know when they make movies from books, they can never make everyone happy with the casting, but Please. They need to at least try to get it right.! Come on!

Young and blond. Is that so much to ask for?

  16. Cameron says:

    NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

IWTV is my absolute favorite movie: they cannot make a remake of it! they should make “the vampire lestat” into a motion picture, because it hasn’t been done yet.

and out of all honesty, “queen of the damned” was a god awful movie. a real disappointment.

  17. DamnFool says:

Jason Lewis ( from sex and the city) should play as Lestat. Brandon Routh from Superman Return as Louis, just give the guy green contact lenses. And Gaspard Ulliel from Hanibal Rising as Armand. And if they make a contiue to Vampire Lestat. They should get Madonna a Gabriella. Robert Downey Jr as Santino. Johhny Depp as Magnus.Leonardo decaprio as Mael. Dwane Johnson The Rock acting out as Khayman. Kate Beckinsale from underworld to be Pandora. And Anglina Jolie as the Queen of the Damned Akasha. Now that would be the perfect cast to play the vampire chonicles. Tim Burton could be the perfect director for remaking the movies. The pale white skin and bruise eyes and the gothic aura

  18. dagon says:

Personally, I think that Heath ledger would have made an incredible Lestat.

But since he is dead, I guess they will have to go withoput someone else
