Daniel Edwards — the American sculptor who created controversial statues of Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug titled Monument to Pro-Life, a topless bust of Hillary Rodham Clinton and the pink plastic babytoy sculpture of Octomom Nadya Suleman titled Octomom: String of Babies (but not the artist who created the Kate Moss in yoga pose statue called Spinx, that was Marc Quinn) — has set his artistic talents on Angelina Jolie and her love of breastfeeding. A new sculpture titled Landmark for Breastfeeding will go on display in the metropolitan Oklahoma City area next month before it goes on permanent display in London, England. Inspired by Angelina‘s comments (and photos) on the wonders of breastfeeding in W magazine last year, Edwards decided to immortalize the sacred act between mother and child (well, in Ange‘s case children) in his latest work of art. Here is a photo of the new sculpture and the accompanying press release:

For World Breastfeeding Week, Phantom-Financial announces the unveiling of a life-size park bench sculpture of Angelina Jolie nude with her twin babies by New York artist Daniel Edwards just minutes from Brad Pitt’s own birthplace in the Oklahoma City Metro area in September before its Fall exhibition in London. “Landmark for Breastfeeding,” inspired by last year’s cover of W magazine featuring Angelina Jolie suckling her baby, depicts a seated nude Jolie double-breastfeeding twins. The tranquil bronze statue demonstrates the “football-hold,” an accepted technique for breastfeeding two babies simultaneously. In recognition of the global effort to encourage breastfeeding, one twin is depicted as being of African descent. Future castings of the statue will represent other world cultures through variations of the babies’ patina coloring. “We believe the statue sends a beautiful message by promoting the acceptance of public breastfeeding. Mothers should be encouraged to nurture their babies anywhere,” said Sandy Wilson of Phantom-Financial. “Hopefully, my sculpture inspires an increase of wetnurses to assist women who have concerns about mastitis, or passing HIV to their infant,” said artist Daniel Edwards in his Connecticut studio where the Jolie statue currently resides. “La Leche League International and Loretta McCallister have been very helpful,” said project coordinator Cory Allen. “We are applying for approval to put ‘Landmark for Breastfeeding’ on permanent display in a Metro area park.” The Jolie monument will be unveiled September 11th at MAINSITE Contemporary Art in Norman. A cast of the sculpture is expected to be auctioned by Sotheby’s October 7th for The New York Academy of Art’s annual Take Home A Nude art auction, after being displayed at Holster Projects in London’s West End.
Can I just say that I LOVE that this piece of art will go on display in Norman, OK … home of my beloved alma mater the University of Oklahoma! I’m not sure how the Okies will receive this new piece of art but … I’m glad they’re being exposed. Edwards really seems to have a knack for melding pop culture with controversy to come up with interesting artwork. IMHO, none of his works have yet surpassed his masterpiece statue of Britney giving birth, Monument to Pro-Life, but I can appreciate that he continues to push the envelope. After the jump, check out a couple more photos of this new Angelina-inspired statue and check out a short video of Daniel Edwards talking about the creation of his latest piece of art …

It’s interesting that Edwards reveals that he has been wanting to make a breastfeeding statue since he created the Britney statue 3 years ago … he really did select the right subject for his piece in selecting Angelina Jolie. You may recall that Ange was the inspiration for a lovely painting back in 2007. In that piece, Angelina was imagined as a Virgin Mary-like goddess. But this statue, to my knowledge, is the first time she has been immortalized in sculpture. I think it’s rad … what do y’all think? And what do you think about celebrities inspiring art? Who would YOU like to see immortalized in art in the future?

I dont think public breastfeeding needs to be promoted. No one likes to see a woman in public breastfeed. A breastfeeding breast isnt the most beautiful thing. How are we supposed to teach our children about privacy and respecting their own bodies when women are flaunting their chests…and we are giving all the peverted creepy men out there something to gawk at.
@gee — I’m sorry to say but your comments are of the most idiotic kind.
@a magical childhood, it’s not like she modeled for it. It was a depiction from a picture, and she might’ve wanted it to feel more natural, or more comfortable. And I’m pretty sure any woman nursing two babies at one time would seem tired, lol.
@gee, You’re opinions widely differ from everyone else’s, a lot of people believe breast feeding is a beautiful thing. And the women are not flaunting their chests when they are obviously feeding their children in a healthy manner. If you don’t teach your child about that, then that’s your own problem. Breastfeeding is not disrespecting a woman’s body.
I personally think it’s a beautiful statue. There is nothing rich, famous, or extravagant about it. It’s simple, natural, and depicts a scene that goes on around the world.
This guy obviously seeks attention more than critical acclaim, but i do admit he is going about it the right way.

He ain’t creating sculptures of things that are happening/happened. For instance Brit did not give birth the way he created. But it was still fairly good to me. Hilary Clinton one was a JOKE but thats whats good. I doubt Bill has seen Hilary’s melons in a long time. Octomum was a tad weird, but yer. And now this is…

I still dont think he is a genius or some master of art. But he does know how to draw attention to his creations.
I like his art….but on a personal note, I am sick and tired of ‘titty nazis’ shoving breastfeeding down everyone’s throat. Not everyone can do it!! And, they are trying to ban formula from hospitals!! Oy! I had to get that off my chest! Again, I do like his art!!!!
I don’t think theres anything wrong with breast feeding.. i will breast feed my child when I have one.. i am also a very private person who won’t even take off my shirt in front of my mom so.. i would definetly not pull out my boob at the park and start feeding my baby.. i will pump before i leave the house and transfer it to a bottle.. It is still breast milk and good for the baby..
reminds me of statues of Isis
[...] Yesterday, I mentioned the breastfeeding scene in Weeds. Today a sculpture of Angelina Jolie breastfeeding [...]
*cough* *cough* The most blatant representation of Isis I’ve ever seen *cough*
but obviously, an trained commisioned artist wouldn’t think of something like symbolism, it’s only crazies who do that!!!
They’ll have her stood upon a plinth holding a torch next. Still, at least it means Madonna’s been binned as the new Isis, I don’t know how much longer I could’ve taken seeing endless pictures of a vapid vaccuous grandmother in skin tight lycra with muscles like a fucking jack russell. Angelina Joie apparently wants to leave acting behind and go into politics. thats just what we need, another pointless celebrity attempting to gain further fame through political circles, rather than leaving it to people who know what they’re doing.
I think the artist is a talented sculptor who is mentally ill. Also, in reply to Gah, “Do you believe Ronald Reagan to be another “pointless celebrity”? And, it is my personal opinion that the present administration doesn’t really know what the hell they are doing. I lost faith in our government when they started giving trillions of dollars to AIG, GM, etc for bailouts and bonuses.
yes, I 100% beleive Ronald Reagan to another pointless celbrity. A man who’s puppetmaster ws George W. Bush who you may remember went on to be president himself. Reagan was put up as candidate BECAUSE he was a celebrity and was able to win over voters who were’nt interested in politics and would vote purely on the basis of him being a name they knew. It was almost genius but incredibly transparent in hindsight.
Reagans policies were developed by his think tanks who still fill the positions of power today. Go check what positions Obama’s people have filled in cabinet before, you might be surprised at how contradictory they are to his policies, and you may have noticed how he’s thrown his policies out the window and jumped on the corperate bandwagon, just like er…… Reagan.
Reagan and his ilk, by being an entirely innefectual puppet president, who started the set up for the fall which just happened, which resulted in the bailouts etc., because they gave omniscient power to corporate interests, who you might have noticed make more dollars than sense and appear to not give a shit about actual people.
So yes, Reagan was worse than Angelina Jolie, because at least hopefully nobody would be stupid enpough to make the same mistake twice. That goes for Schwarzenegger too.
I will now stop talking about politics. sorry….. :D
apart from I mean George H. W. Bush, not the idiot son one
Gah….you seem well educated and I respect your comments and opinions. I would suggest, however, that you engage spellcheck and edit your remarks before submitting so you don’t appear to be the “idiot one”.
