Alien Nation
The TV Guide

Yesterday afternoon David and I met up with our friends Ollie and Caleb for a late afternoon showing of District 9 — a movie I’ve been dying to see for months now! The buzz about this film has been building for weeks now and I’ve only heard great things … but I did my best to stay away from any spoilers that might ruin the film for me before seeing it. The movie was featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine last week and hinted at a huge plot development that I didn’t want to know beforehand … from that moment on, I kept well away from all things District 9 until I could see the movie for myself. BE WARNED that my review below will contain spoilers of the movie so DO NOT READ IT if you want to remain unspoiled. In short, I loved the film and think many of y’all will love it, too:

Yes, District 9 lives up to the hype and is a very excellent movie … that being said, it works very well because of the involvement of Peter Jackson who produced the film and knows how to tell a tale with FX and make it look believable. To be honest, the best things about this film have been inspired by previous sci-fi movies and TV shows and owes a lot of its success to those films/movies. District 9 has shades of the films Enemy Mine (but set on Earth) and Starship Troopers (but in a serious way) and is similar to the TV shows Alien Nation (but set in South Africa and more gritty) and V (without the aliens having an advantage). Altho the film borrows from earlier projects, it does tell a mostly unique tale of its own in a very believable manner. There were a few plot developments that I hated but overall I loved the tale of a massive spaceship full of grotesque-looking refugee aliens being stranded on our planet. As you start to empathize with the aliens, or prawns as they are called in the film, you start to truly understand the brutality of the human race. To be completely honest, the sorts of things you see in the film would most likely happen on some scale if ever the same circumstance were to happen in real life (tho, I contend the US would have a great role in the exploitation … you know, should an alien race take refuge here on planet Earth, that is). The movie is much more than an alien movie … it’s a great commentary on social inequality. The ending leaves the movie wide open for a sequel, prolly called District 10, with will likely hit theaters in 3 years. District 9 is deffo one of my fave films of the year thus far.

After the movie, we made our way to Kitchen 24 in Hollywood for dinner and drinks and ended up calling it an early night. I fell asleep while reading last night. This afternoon, I’m making my way down to Huntington Beach to see Darion play beach volleyball for charity in shorty shorts. I’ll do my best to come back with photos :)

i absolutely hated it. like there was no depth at all. i’m a girl who usually loves movies with aliens and exploding people, but this movie sucked.

  2. Colleen says:

the only good thing about District 9 were the alien weapons that just totally annihilated everything (and the baby alien loved him :P ) the rest of this movie was a complete waste of time

I, like you Trent, was quite excited about District 9. I stayed away from spoilers of any kind, but after going to see it today, I wish I had. After 30 minutes of the worst mockumentary I had ever seen, I had to leave the the theatre and promptly ask for my money back. I believe I tried to give it the benefit of a doubt, honestly wanting to leave after the first 10 minutes. According to my brother, who stayed for the entire film, “It started it pick up after I left,” even if it did, it didn’t matter to me. The makers of the film didn’t give me enough to care what happened to the aliens, South Africa, or even humanity in general. Severely disappointed.

I loved this film. It had a strong storyline and message and yet it was also exciting and thrilling to watch. It is a great social commentary driven home even more by its setting in Johannesburg. It wasn’t about the explosions and special effects. If you want a fluff film go see Transformers. One of the best films I have seen all year. Sharlto Copley was amazing at Wikus!

  5. Meghan says:

Um….I think I saw a different film than the first three comments. I don’t what y’all were watching…..

Amazing movie. Loved it. By i hope they don’t make a sequel. It’s one of those movies that don’t need a sequel.
If you hated it I don’t know what you were on, but it seriously impairs your judgment….

  8. C says:

I’m guessing that those who hated the movie probably also missed alot of the points being made in it…

  9. Colleen says:

    @ C

i got what the movie was about …and i still felt it was terrible.

  10. Jenna says:

Trent, I’m curious about the plot developments that you hated. Care to expound?

  11. Kat says:

I think it is funny that just because someone don’t agree with some of you, that means they are “on something”. Every movie will have someone like and hate it, that is just life.

On with my comment……. I didn’t have a desire to watch it, but went anyway. I wish I wouldn’t have. The movie didn’t make you like Wikus, so you didn’t care about what was happening to him, until near the end of the film. It made you nearly hate the human race and want the aliens to win. Then at the end you cared about Wikus, but then I was already over the movie. I did love the baby alien though, he was awesome and I want one.

My son and I LOVED this movie! It’s funny how the opinions people have expressed are such total opposites! Walking out after 10 minutes, yet my son is dying to see it again! To each his own, eh?

  13. Meghan says:

@Kat In this movie the monster was the human race. That was the point. What was done to the aliens was the same as what was done to the Jews in the Holocaust and to blacks during the apartheid. Humans are more than capable of this kind of hate and evil and it stands to reason that if a new race came to this planet that humans would be fearful and mistreat them.

I saw this movie Friday night and absolutely LOVED it. I wasn’t really in the mood for a sci-fi/fantasy action movie, but thoroughly enjoyed it!!
It takes you through every emotion, and I’m surprised I have finger nails left lol The only real thing I didn’t enjoy was the acting from the father of his wife, and some of the other family members. Otherwise I thought it was excellent.
There will definitely be a District 10……he promised him!!! ;-p

  15. Kat says:

@Meghan… I understand that and all. But the original human race, you hate them in the movie. They are jerks. I also know this is how it would really be if this were to happen, which makes you wonder about people. They didn’t want to hurt anyone or anything. I know humans are capable of this hate, as you listed the examples it is obvious that they are. But you would think after so many years they would have grown up somewhat. I can understand being fearful of a new race such as this, but them being there 20 years you think they would of been able to live with them and not be so mean.

these kind of movies arent really my thing, the only thing about the movie i didnt really like is
a: how i was seated so close to the GD screen because the movie was packed.
b: the bald headed bastard just wouldnt die. until the end when he got ripped apart, but it was a tremendous amount of gunfire and he’s just walkin through it all unscaved. in my head i was thinking ‘JUST DIE ALREADY!’
… & some of the shizz was just gross. i couldnt watch the fingernails. BARF
