Shockingly sad and totally unbelievable news to pass along … TMZ is reporting that superstar DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, was found dead in his apartment in NYC early Friday morning. As you may recall, Goldstein and friend Travis Barker were the only two survivors of a plane crash last year. Since this news is just coming to light, there has yet been no information on the cause of death. The TMZ report is light on details but they seem certain that DJ AM has passed away has been updated with more information on the discovery of AM‘s body … read on:
Cops tell us DJ AM — also known as Adam Goldstein — was found dead this afternoon in New York City. Law enforcement sources tell us he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. We’re told drug paraphernalia [including prescription bottles] was found at the scene. We’re told DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days — one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door. We’re told the friend called the police, who broke down the door and then found DJ AM’s body.
Un-fucking-real!!! There has been so much tragic death this year … it’s exhausting. I’ll be sure to update with more info as it becomes available but … damn … gone too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Goldstein‘s family and friends :(
UPDATE: AM last updated his official Twitter profile on Tuesday afternoon, according to TMZ, his friends hadn’t heard from him in a few days. Here is his last tweet (which is a lyric from the Grandmaster Flash song New York New York):

It’s not entirely clear when his body was found. The New York Post says he was found dead early Friday morning, TMZ states he was found late Friday afternoon. More developments, if any, to come …

They would’ve had to give him painkillers. There are actually non-narcotic painkillers, but sometimes those just aren’t enough and they have to use the stuff that really knocks you out. Which is especially unfortunate for someone who’s got a history of drug addiction like him. And sadly an addict can be sober for decades (he had about ten years) and still have a pretty major relapse.
That’s not to say that he definately ODed (although it does sound likely), but I’ve read so many comments on other sites about how “selfish” he is for doing drugs after the crash (which we don’t even know for a fact) and it really pisses me off, it’s an illness. And if the speculation is true, it was brought on by the accident.

I haven’t really followed much that he has done, the only reason I knew of him, was because of Travis Barker. Yet the news of his death still made my heart drop some. He seemed like a strong man, he did die to young. Especially after being one of the few to survive a plane crash. Its sad, he will be missed by many, I’m sure. T.T

Is Nicole Ritchie still strongly best friends with him….kinda wondering how she to is taking it all in with this news and her second baby on the way…..I’m always thinking just how many people knew him so closely…..and yes even Travis and what he’s now going through.

An eerie thought is that Death had tried his hands at Mr. Goldstein and he slipped through his fingers, this time he was not that successful. Whether the hands of fate were thwarted and then caught up with Adam, it’s still a sad thing when someone passes. May he rest in peace.
I seriously cannot believe this… I’m so saddened by the news of DJ AM’s passing. I DJ and as such tend to try and listen to the mixes of others and he was simply one of the best. And he seemed like an incredibly down to earth guy. I can’t even imagine what he went through in this last year in the aftermath of the plane crash, and it’s so heartbreaking to hear it had to end this way for him. This is extremely sad. I mean, I never really followed the guy nor his career but I was at work today and my boss told me about the news and I was surprised. After all of that and then poof. Gone. : (

I mean it feels like yesterday, it pretty much was, when i was gobsmacked at the non-updated post of DJ AM and Travis Barkers plane crash. Then only a hour or so later, refreshed and an update by you Trent stated that they survived and were the only survivors. I mean what those chances, the two celebrities survive. Its so sad all over. I mean it’s more a shock than Michael’s passing because, i heard of that the moment i woke up that day, not from here.

I also cannot believe this man was only 36. Not a day over 28 did he look i believe. I mean, how old is Nicole Ritchie? Was he a lot older than or she is in her 30′s too? I’m still stunned over this news and hope that drugs weren’t the cause of his death, such a sad way to lose someone especially for his family. But if he was troubled, and no one would help him, whether it be he didn’t seek help or the help he received never soothed his soul, perhaps he is in a better place now. Time, days or hours will soon tell. RIP in the meantime.

Speaking of the celeb death topic, MJ would have been 51 yesterday, in Australian time-zone speaking. And from what i’m aware, still hasn’t been buried. Can someone please put that Legend to rest! Spare his family, or what family he has that wants to move on, his children and his body!
I can’t handle any more deaths. They say people die in three’s. I’ve lost track of the groupings and count at this point. I hope he was the third of a group so we don’t lose anyone else.
This is so sad. He survived that crash to die a bit later on. I’m guessing it was due to drugs. I hope I’m wrong.
I think that final Twitter may be a clue or a message that has deeper meaning as to his frame of mind. He sounds broken hearted and hopeless in his reference. I hope this wasn’t an intentional thing.
Just because there were drugs there, doesn’t mean drugs caused it. The twitter post does sound like it could have meant something or nothing at all. I think it’s odd that people can be dead for a few days before someone goes looking for them, especially when they’re a twitterer, y’know? (unless they don’t twitter often)
This is really sad I just can’t believe life could be that bad that you would need to take your own life. It also makes you think that like if I had a friend that depressed I hope that they would reach out to me for some help or support and I hope that I would have some type of clue that they my be thinking of taking their own life and I could help. I think sometime life sucks really bad I also think life is just a journey for us to make mistakes and learn lots of things,life goes by fast enough we need to find our self worth and love ourselves.
Thats just how I feel.
