In a new interview with the UK newspaper The Sun, Tori Amos talks about her personal opinions on Lady Gaga and he staying power in the music industry. Never one to shy away from actively voicing her opinions, Tori makes it clear that she believes Gaga to be a flash in the pan who will be long forgotten in the years to come. HMMM:

TORI AMOS fears LADY GAGA has a limited shelf life, hinting fans will soon tire of the quirky New Yorker’s novelty pop act. The Cornflake Girl songstress – who’s been selling out venues since 1991 – struggles to visualise GaGa playing on the same bill as veteran rocker NEIL YOUNG two decades from now. However, she admits the Poker Face singer’s unique brand of “entertaining” performance art is a welcome antidote to the global economic crisis. She told The Sun: “She’s what I call a meteor – singers who entertain people for a while. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that. But then there are people like Neil Young who show up at Glastonbury 40 years into their career. And that’s a very different kind of artist. Neil Young doesn’t have to get his bum out on stage! The question is, will Lady GaGa be playing alongside Neil Young at Glastonbury in 20 years time? She wants to entertain people. Right now, half the world is depressed and they need to be entertained. So her timing’s perfect” … As a result of her own traumatic beginnings, Amos can empathise with the likes of BRITNEY SPEARS, whose rapid rise to prominence as a teen triggered a series of very public meltdowns. “For me, the best thing that happened is that I didn’t have success like my father wanted me to when I was 14-years-old and I was playing clubs,” she said. Thank God it didn’t happen for me at that time. I probably wouldn’t be talking to you if it had. I think it’s really tough on teenagers when they have that kind of success. But you have to acknowledge Britney’s discipline right now – being a mum and being out on the road. When you do that year-in, year-out since you were a teenager, it can become overwhelming.” Outspoken Amos has also sent out a warning shot to young female upstarts eyeing a career in the music industry. The 46-year-old singer claims record companies are rife with power-hungry money-makers who exploit new stars for their own greedy means. She said: “A lot of times you have a producer who will say, ‘You’re lucky to be having this opportunity.’ Sure, there are a lot of other talented people out there, but you have to fight for your freedom. There’s a side to this industry that nurtures divas who can’t write. It’s a big business. I produce the records. I don’t hand over control to some really expensive producer who then talks to the record company and then tries to bend me to their will – for commercial purposes. But there are a lot of producers/co-writers who the only way they can make a living is if the divas are not producing themselves and not writing their songs.”

LOL! I love how Tori thinks that Gaga is only popular right now because of tough economic times. As I’ve said before, I’m not particularly entertained by anything that Gaga does (save for her catchy first single Just Dance) but I can appreciate that there are others that are entertained by her. Just like many people don’t like some of the artist that I enjoy, there is room enough for everyone to like what they like. BUT, I do agree with Tori that acts like Gaga or Katy Perry will not stand the test of time. Even if you don’t agree with her, you really cannot fault Tori for being honest about her opinions. She has been an incredible artist for many, many years and she shows no signs of slowing down. I think an artist like Tori who has stood and will continue to stand the test of time has the pedigree to made judgments like this. She is 100% right that young artists should hang on to their integrity and fight for the freedom to make the art that they are most proud of … flash in the pans may make money in the short term but longevity comes from carefully managing your career. It seems to me that young artists looking for someone to emulate would be better served if they followed Tori Amos‘s example rather than that of the here today/gone tomorrow pop star du jour.

Production continues on the third season of Gossip Girl which begins airing next month … earlier this month we saw photos of new castmember Hilary Duff filming her first scenes for the show and today we get to see another photo of her and her female GG cohorts making their way to the Manhattan set yesterday afternoon:

Oh yeah, Penn Badgley is featured in these pics as well but I’m sure he don’t mind gettin’ lumped in with the ladies. I’m really looking forward to the return of this show especially to see if Hil D. will enhance the show or not. Not for nothing but I haven’t actually seen Hilary Duff in anything before so I have nothing to base an early opinion on … I do trust the GG folks to make some great eps so … I’m hopeful. Shoot, no matter what Hilary‘s role on the show will be I deffo know that I’ll be tuning in for Chuck Bass‘s gay kiss :) Woot!!

Because Britney Spears is still in NYC, NY performing sold out shows at Madison Square Garden on her tour The Circus starring Britney Spears, that means that her moochy ex-husband and father of her children Kevin Federline and his ladyfriend Victoria Prince are in town as well. Here are pics of the happy couple making a fast-food “run” for some grub yesterday:

You can’t tell because of the cropping but Vicky P. is carrying a bag of food in addition to the bag that K-Fed is carrying … I find it hard to believe that he’s gonna share but, you know, whatevs. It’s amazing how well two people can eat when neither of them work … ain’t that just the dickens?

Earlier this month we saw photos of Britney Spears on a poolside set of what I believed was a photoshoot … but it turns out that our dear Britney was rockin’ her white bikini for a promo video for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. In the clip, Brit Brit swaps thoughts with VMAs host Russell Brand … here are a few screencaps:

In a new promo for MTV’s Video Music Awards, set for Sept. 13 in New York City, Britney Spears wishes for a personal invite from Russell Brand, who is hosting for the second year in a row. Standing by a pool in a white bikini and a black sun hat, Spears says in a voiceover, “I wonder if he’ll invite me. I mean, I can obviously get an invite, but it would be nice for Russell to invite me personally now that we’re friends and all.” Meanwhile, Brand has VMA jitters of his own. “I hope I didn’t balls it up with her last time,” he says. “Some of those things I said could have been construed as offensive. I hope she don’t think ill of me.” Back to Spears, this time biting her fingernail: “Should I have played it up more when he was flirting with me last year? I have to admit there is something sexy about his dangerous ways.” At the end of the spot, Brand realizes he’s hearing Spears’s voiceover and that she might be hearing his. What’s a bloke to do? “Britney,” he says in a high-pitched voice, “this is the voice of your mind … go to Russell’s hotel room and abandon yourself. Give yourself to him, Britney. Sleep with Russell!” The VMAs air live on Sept. 13 (9 p.m. EST) on MTV.

Last night I attended the third NYC show of the final leg of the Nine Inch Nails tour Wave Goodbye. Last Saturday night’s performance took place at the Bowery Ballroom and Sunday night’s performance took place at Webster Hall … last night’s venue was Terminal 5:

In addition to an amazing setlist performed with intense precision by Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy was brought out on stage to duet with the band on 3 songs. It was an especially fun night for me as I was able to meet up with Trent Reznor, his adorable fiancée Mariqueen and the rest of the NIN crew before the show … where I even got to meet Peter Murphy as well. TR has agreed to give me another interview back in LA at the close of the Wave Goodbye Tour but I’ll get to that in a bit. Romeo Beckham, middle child of David and Victoria Beckham, won’t be turning 7 years old until September 1 but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to get the party started. Becks took his boys to Skateland skate park in Los Angeles, CA for an early birthday party to celebrate little Romeo‘s upcoming birthday … here is a pic of the Beckham men leaving the venue and the back of their SUV stuffed with gifts for Romeo:

My guess is that perhaps Becks or Vicki B. or mebbe the whole family will be out of town on Romeo‘s actual birthday so they decided to throw his party early so they could all be together to celebrate. I kinda love how relatively low key Beckham birthday parties are. The family likes to go to Pink Taco or visit martial arts studios rather than engage in over-the-top nonsense. Not that any of the Beckham children will grow up with any sort of normalcy (considering their fame and wealth) but the family does appear to try and keep things as next to normal as possible. Happy early Birthday, Romeo!

Yesterday Chris Brown was in LA Court to face formal sentencing for his June criminal conviction for assaulting his former girlfriend Rihanna last February. As you may recall, Brown was due to be sentenced earlier this month but was delayed a couple of weeks. Brown was sentenced to 5 years probation, 6 months (or 1,400 hours) of community service and is ordered by the judge to NOT to be in contact with Rihanna for the duration of his 5 year probation (he also must stay at least 10 yards from her if they attend the same event). Here are pics of Brown and his lawyer Mark Geragos in court at yesterday’s sentencing:

Chris Brown will spend 1,400 hours removing graffiti and washing cars for assaulting Rihanna. Brown, 20, was formally sentenced in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday to six months of community labor in Virginia after he pleaded guilty in June to one count of felony assault against Rihanna, 21. Brown’s six-month labor sentence will be supervised by the chief of police in Richmond, Va., who wrote to the judge that Brown would perform graffiti removal, cleaning and maintaining grounds, and washing cars. “Brown’s labor hours will be flexible to accommodate his entertainment career,” according to DA spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons. The singer, who looked solemn and wore a black pinstripe suit and matching tie, was also sentenced to five years of probation, a year of domestic violence classes, and was ordered to pay fines. He was accompanied in the courtroom by his mother and at least one bodyguard. As part of his plea bargain with prosecutors, a second felony charge of making criminal threats was dropped. Rihanna was not present for the hearing. Donald Etra, an attorney for the “Umbrella” singer, had previously asked the judge for lesser restrictions on communication and contact between the two singers. However, L.A. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg ordered Brown not to have any communication with Rihanna for the next five years, which includes phone and email contact. Brown was also ordered not to come within 100 yards of Rihanna – 10 yards if they’re both at the same event. Toward the end of the hearing, Judge Schnegg warned Brown, in an apparent reference to reports that the two singers may have had contact against court order: “I’m not immune to any chatter on the airwaves. Do you understand, Mr. Brown, that any violation of this order is a violation of your probation and it comes with the possible penalty of prison?” Brown responded “Yes.” Asked if Rihanna was disappointed by the stay-away order, her lawyer stated: “There were no surprises today. The decision was up to the court, not Rihanna.” Etra added that Rihanna does have the option of asking the court to soften the stay-away order down the line, but he wouldn’t say if she plans to do so. Etra added that while the order specifically forbids Brown from contacting Rihanna, she was also warned by the court back in June not to contact him.

I have to say, the order that Chris has to stay away from Rihanna for such a long time is surprising, I don’t recall hearing that that was part of any deal previously reported. Also, in the wake of Brown‘s sentencing, new documents have come to light chronicling a history of violence between the couple BEFORE he physically assaulted her in February of this year.
