Here is our first look at a new set of promo pics released by The CW to promote their new series The Vampire Diaries based on the book series of the same name. Often referred to as Twilight for TV (even tho the books, written by L.J. Smith, were published many years before the first Twilight book hit store shelves), The Vampire Diaries tell the tale of Elena Gilbert who is torn between the love of two vampire brothers — the good one Stefan (played by Paul Wesley) and the bad one Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder):

Oooh steamy. This ad campaign has been titled Love Sucks and is all kinds of sexy. I quite like the top photo, it’s sexy and not too cheesy. It remains to be seen if this vampire TV series aimed at tweens (as opposed to HBO‘s True Blood which is aimed at adults) will be as successful as The Twilight Saga movie franchise but I’m sure The CW is gonna give it all they’ve got. My flight from LA to Detroit was pretty uneventful yesterday, while it felt longer than the 3 hours and 33 minutes it takes to get home to Detroit we did manage to arrive 20 mins. early so that kinda made up for how long the flight felt. Upon arrival, Sarah and I went out for a sushi dinner before we met up with her friend Agnes for a night on the town. It’s Dearborn Homecoming this weekend so we made sure to enjoy some of the festivities last night. First, we went to Silky’s for some drinks and to see Blackberry Brandy perform … they were kinda a’ight. Then we went to Cheli’s to do some more drinkin’, a bit of dancin’ and to enjoy a performance by 50 Amp Fuse … they were kinda awesome. Here are some photos from last night’s fun:

Both bands are cover bands but 50 Amp Fuse were much more fun. They did some Journey and some Bon Jovi by request for us so we had fun. Sarah and Anges got a dance lesson on how to do The Hustle from some fun ladies, we had a blast. The girls kept pourin’ drinks down my throat so I had a bit of a rough morning today … but I’m feelin’ fine and ready for the day.

It’s been raining all morning but a nice lunch of Jet’s Pizza got me in a great mood! Tracey and Zakiya are comin’ over so we can celebrate her birthday and then later on Sarah and I are going to see Tori Amos at the Detroit Opera House tonight! Fun!!! My trip home to Detroit is already half over … boo!!!

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was confirmed as Supreme Court Justice by the US Senate Thursday, was officially sworn in today as the Supreme Court‘s third female Justice and first of Hispanic descent. In front of 60 family members and friends, Justice Sotomayor was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice John Roberts with her brother Juan Luis Sotomayor by her side and her mother Celina Sotomayor holding the swearing in Bible. Here are a couple photos of our newest Supreme Court Justice being sworn in the East Conference Room of the Supreme Court building in Washington DC today:

Justice Sonia Sotomayor took the judicial oath on Saturday, becoming the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court in United States history. At just past 11 a.m., Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. administered a pair of oaths to her in two private ceremonies at the Supreme Court building, completing her ascent to a life-tenured position as the nation’s 111th justice, and the first to be nominated by a Democratic president since 1994. In the first ceremony, which took place in the justice’s conference room and was attended only by her relatives and a court photographer, she took the standard oath affirmed by all federal employees, swearing to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” She and the chief justice then walked to the court’s East Conference Room for the judicial oath, in which she stood before about 60 friends and family members and swore to “administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me” under the Constitution and laws of the United States. The appointment of Justice Sotomayor, 55, capped a life story that began in a Bronx housing project, where the Puerto Rican girl was raised by her widowed mother … Saturday’s oath-taking ceremonies brought to a close a 10-week confirmation battle in which Republicans attacked her as an alleged “judicial activist,” citing speeches she had made on topics like foreign law and the role of diversity on the judiciary, including a now-famous comment about the superior judgment of a “wise Latina” … But Democrats insisted that Judge Sotomayor was a highly qualified, mainstream and moderate jurist, and in the end Democrats’ numerical advantage in the Senate virtually ensured her success. The Senate on Thursday voted 68 to 31 to confirm her in a largely party-line vote: No Democrat voted against her, while all but 9 of the chamber’s 40 Republicans did so. Although Justice Sotomayor is now a full member of the court, entitled to move into her new chambers and prepare for her first case — a campaign-finance dispute left over from the court’s last term — she still has several rituals yet to attend President Obama, who did not attend Saturday’s events, will be at a White House ceremony on Wednesday in Justice Sotomayor’s honor. And on Sept. 8, the Supreme Court will hold a special invitation-only investiture ceremony — a special sitting at which she will take her seat on the dais for the first time, probably followed by an appearance alongside Chief Justice Roberts for a traditional picture on the front steps of the court.

Woot!! I was thrilled to hear the news Thursday that Justice Sotomayor was confirmed by the Senate but her official swearing in today solidifies my excitement. I have every confidence that she will serve the United States of America well as our newest Justice. Much love and congrats goes out to her and her entire family today. They have every reason to be proud of Justice Sotomayor.

Early in the week we saw photos of the Twilight B-List make their way to Vancouver, BC to begin production on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and they were followed by star Taylor Lautner a couple of days later … today we get to see photos of Taylor chillin’ with the B-Listers (including Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jackson Rathbone and Xavier Samuel) at an impromptu get-together in Vancouver a couple of nights ago:

And so it begins … as you can see in the Kellan photo, new castmember Bryce Dallas Howard is standing next to Ashley Greene … she must be trying to ingratiate herself to the rest of the cast, which is smart. It looks like Taylor is ruling the roost with the other castmates, which is a bit different than the way the pecking order was the last time. Taylor is lucky he got to keep his role as Jacob Black cuz, as we learned from the firing of Rachelle Lefevre, any one in the Twilight cast is expendable. Now that he’s kept the role that has elevated him to one of the main stars of the film franchise, Taylor looks much much happier these days ;) I mistakenly mentioned that Robert Pattinson made his way to Vancouver with the rest of the cast (well, he is still “on his way”, he just hasn’t arrived yet and is still in Los Angeles) … so until he and/or Kristen Stewart get into town, Taylor is top dog amongst the Twilights in Vancouver. Not bad, pup.

Samantha Burke, Jude Law‘s babymama/actress/model who will give birth to his 4th child, has been sharing the progress of her baby bump online for sharing with the world cuz when you’re incubating the fetus of a world-famous actor, you apparently want to share that kind of thing with any and everyone. Here are a few snaps posted by Burke on her online photo album:

In school she was voted the girl with the best smile in the class. But at the moment, Samantha Burke’s grin is not the thing that stands out in her photographs. The model, who is carrying Jude Law’s fourth child, has posted a series of pictures of her baby bump on the internet. Scantily clad and voluptuous, with her belly swelling out in front, she is almost unrecognisable as the fresh-faced high school student [remembered by high school friends]. Old friends have told the Mail that Miss Burke, now 24, was always part of the ‘popular crowd’ at school in Pensacola, a seaside town in northwestern Florida. Nicknamed Sambo and Sammy B, she was one of the ‘bat girls’ who would follow the school baseball team everywhere. ‘She was really into sports and she would always come to the baseball games to support us,’ said one of the former members of the team, Johnny Ray Smith. ‘Those type of girls are into more athletic guys. They are also athletic so they kind of stuck together, going out, working out and playing sports.’ Miss Burke is said to have caught boys’ eyes and was awarded the prize for ‘best smile’ in 2003, her graduation year. One high school friend, Richard Wiggins, now 25, said it was ‘no surprise’ that she had broken into the world of modelling. ‘She was always really pretty in school. She was popular with all the guys. They were always talking about her,’ he said. ‘She was eventually going to do something with her looks.’ Before her modelling career took off, Miss Burke spent her weekends at the beach with friends and worked as a scantily-clad Hooters waitress. She quit the job after being signed by Florida-based agency Izon Models and began travelling to and from New York for work. She eventually made the city her home and began to take acting classes at the New York Studio for Film and Television. Miss Burke met Law, 36, while he was in the city filming Sherlock Holmes. They are understood to have spotted one another outside the 1OAK nightclub in the city’s Meatpacking district. They went for a meal at a nearby diner before going back to the actor’s room at the Greenwich Hotel.

… And the rest, as they say, is history. While Samantha may have had a thing for baseball players in high school, she really hit a grand slam by bedding and gettin’ knocked up with the scrawny (yet sexy) Brit boy from the UK. It may seem a bit unsavory for her to be posting her bump watch diary online but I can’t really say that I blame her. She really did hit the jackpot with this one tho … gettin’ pregs by Jude Law is the best thing that’s ever happened to her career.

The final Medical Examiner’s report of the late television pitchman Billy Mays, who was laid to rest early last month after he passed away in late June due to in large part to heart disease, has been completed and released to the media. The report concludes that while Mays‘s cause of death is officially “heart attack”, the use of cocaine played a factor in triggering the heart attack that killed Billy Mays. In response to the conclusions of this report, the Mays family has issued a statement attempting to respond to the findings of the final Medical Examiner’s Report, making clear that they consider the findings “speculative” at best. Here are the deets from the official autopsy report and the response statement, in full, from the Mays family:

Billy Mays’ cocaine use contributed to the cause of his death, according to an autopsy report released today. The TV pitchman had last used cocaine days prior to his death, the report states. He died from heart disease, but cocaine use was listed as a contributory cause of death because of the cumulative effect cocaine use had on his heart, the autopsy stated. Mays, 50, was found dead in Tampa on June 28. The autopsy was performed the next day. “From the presence of metabolites of cocaine and the absence of cocaine itself, it was concluded that Mr. Mays used cocaine in the few days prior to his death but not immediately prior to death,” a Hillsborough County press release states. “Cocaine can raise the arterial blood pressure, directly cause thickening of the wall of the left ventricle of the heart, and accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries.” The autopsy report doesn’t mention how much cocaine Mays used. “I don’t know that that necessarily is known,” county spokeswoman Lori Hudson said. “Clearly it was in his system. It had been used in the days prior to his death, but the exact amount over how much of a period of time, we wouldn’t have that.”

Wow!! Of all people, I am shocked to know that Billy liked blow (among other party favors listed in the Medical Examiner’s report).
