MTV caught up with Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, to get his opinion on who he thinks would win in a fight between Angel/Angelus or Edward Cullen of Twilight. Obvs, Joss is gonna root for his own character but I have to agree with him … Angel really would “kick the shit” out of prettyboy Edward:

Over a decade ago there was another vampire phenomenon taking over the psyche of teens everywhere. And that was “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The story of a slayer, Buffy, falling in love with a vampire, Angel, became an instant sensation when the show made its debut on the now defunct network, The WB in 1997. So, with “Twilight” mania taking over the world these days, how does “Buffy” creator, Joss Whedon, feel about the franchise? Long story short, he’s cool with it. “I don’t get this whole vampire romance thing. I mean that could never happen. Who would believe that? It seems so stupid. I literally thought that when I created the character if Angel,” he told MTV News. “I thought a vampire romance with a slayer … people are going to laugh me out of the room. They’ll never go for it. Clearly I was wrong. There’s something really timeless about it. I saw ‘Twilight’… there’s something primal about that story. You can’t get away from it. It works like gangbusters.” But, the big question is: Who would win in a fight: Edward Cullen or Angel? “I think Robert Pattinson is really cool. Angel would kick the shit out of him. He’s Angelus,” Whedon said without even flinching. “There’s no Edward Cullunus. He just gets shiny in the sun. Boreanaz would have him down in a heartbeat. No offense, cause he’s hot.”

Sorry Twilighters, Joss is right … in a head to head vampire battle, Angelus would mop the floor with Edward. But, to be honest, it’s all a moot point cuz Buffy would stake his ass first. Project Runway season 5 winner and bona fide fashion designer Christian Siriano was on hand for an in-store appearance at Victoria’s Secret at The Grove here in SoCal yesterday afternoon to promote the launch of the limited edition Christian Siriano Collection of VS Make-Up. Not only was Christian on hand to promote the line but he also seemed very intent to show the world that the boy can actually smile:

I have to say … it’s really great to see Christian smiling so fiercely these days! His smirk was cool but I much prefer it when he flashes his pearly whites ;)

The newly single Jessica Simpson decided she didn’t need no stinkin’ man for her to have a fun night on the town … so last night, in celebration of her BFF Ken Paves‘s birthday, she tied one on and drank her blues away. If there’s anyone a celebrity can rely on in her time of need – it’s her hairdresser. And who better for newly single Jessica Simpson to step out with than close friend Ken Paves, as she glammed up to celebrate the celebrity hairdresser’s birthday at restaurant Beso. Blonde Jessica wore a tight black dress which showed off her hourglass figure. But although she was out for a big night, she didn’t appear to be in much of a party mood as she left the restaurant owned by Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria. Looking downcast, and fed up Jessica was mobbed by photographers and fans and appeared to be keen to exit the fuss as quickly as possible.

As you may recall, it was reported that Tony Romo broke up with Jessica on the eve of her birthday last month because he didn’t want to play Ken in her plans for a Barbie & Ken-themed birthday party. If Jess had just enlisted her real-life Ken to play with her, she might still be with her real boyfriend. Ah well … that ship has sailed. Now Jess is back on the market … but while she waits for her next Mr. Right, it’s nice that she’s got good ol’ reliable Ken Paves to lean on.

Sienna Miller, star of the new action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of British GQ magazine. Yesterday we learned that Sienna admitted in her GQ coverstory that she is finally aware that her selfish behavior fraternizing with married men doesn’t cast her in the best light … which is good news for everyone concerned. I’m not sure where in creation one can still find wicker chairs like this but props to the photographer for the old school vibe. I have a photo of my mom circa 1976 sitting in a chair like this with all over children standing around her … good stuff. Earlier this week we saw photos of Mischa Barton all dolled up for a night on the town in NYC mere weeks after she was released from the psychiatric hospital where she was involuntarily admitted for posing a danger to herself. Today we get to see photos of Mischa lookin’ really rough after a long day of work and working out … could it be that the poor girl is pushing herself too far?

Photos like these, of a young person lookin’ haggard and bedraggled, would be cause for concern under any circumstances … but Mischa was JUST under psychiatric care and is now on the loose again. All of her castmates on her new series The Beautiful Life claim that she is ready to be back to work … but it just seems to me that those comments are just a lot of lip-service because are they really going to say otherwise? I’m not convinced that MB is ready to be back to work, let alone to be back on the party scene … and photos like these only fortify my concern.

With all the reading on my plate right now I ended up staying in last night and did a lot of reading. I managed to finish Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets but before moving on to the next book in the series, I decided to start reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold:

My good friend Diana sent me a copy of The Lovely Bones the first week I moved to LA three years ago … and I never got around to reading it. After hearing so many good things from so many of y’all AND since the movie adaption will hit theaters this Fall, I figured now is as good a time to get it read. I’m a few chapters in and am really enjoying the tone of the book. It’s inventive and, thus far, well-written. I hear that it will get sad and that tears may be on my horizon but I think I’m up to the task. Since I’ll be flying to and from Detroit this weekend, I’m hoping to have it finished by Sunday.

Tonight, David and I are going to the LA premiere of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra at Mann’s Chinese Theater here in Hollywood … I’ve been anxious to see this movie for far too long, I can’t wait to see it for myself. I’m hoping to inadvertently run into Channing Tatum tonight … wish me luck ;)

More casting news for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to pass along this day … 14 year old Jodelle Ferland, who some of you might remember as the creepy little girl from the film Silent Hill, has been added to the ensemble cast of the third Twilight film in a role described as “a vampire who has just been turned”. To be completely honest, I don’t really remember this character from when I read Eclipse last year but every vampire movie franchise has to have a creepy little vampire child in the mix somewhere along the way. Kirsten Dunst got her start in Hollywood appearing as the vampire child Claudia in Interview with the Vampire (alongside Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise) in the early 90′s … perhaps The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will do the same for little Jodelle:

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in “Twilight” land, what with news of major casting replacements, debunked nude scene news and allegations of plagiarism against the author who created the franchise. Yet Stephenie Meyer’s juggernaut chugs forward, and as the cast begins to head to Vancouver to start filming “Eclipse,” the third film in the series, they’ll be joined by yet another new castmate. Fourteen-year-old actress Jodelle Ferland will become the newest vampire in “Eclipse,” according to Variety. While there is much speculation about which character she will play — possibly the vampire Bree — all that is known for certain about her role, the report says, is that she will play “a vampire who has just been turned.” Ferland will join fellow new vampire Xavier Samuel, who will play Riley. Though just a teenager, the Canadian-born Ferland is already a veteran, having performed on the big and small screens for a decade. Her next film appearance will be opposite Renee Zellweger in the September thriller “Case 39.” Zellweger plays a social worker who rescues Ferland from parents who want to kill her, only to discover that perhaps the parents were onto something. Ferland also has a role in Joss Whedon’s 2010 horror flick, “The Cabin in the Woods.” With the Comic-Con and TwiCon fan events behind them, the “Eclipse” cast is beginning to travel to Vancouver to jumpstart filming in mid-August. The movie is expected to shoot through October, with production wrapping shortly before “New Moon,” the second of the “Twilight” films, is released on November 20. “Eclipse” is slated for a June 2010 release.

Silent Hill is the only film that I have seen that features Jodelle Ferland but I am VERY encouraged to learn that Joss Whedon cast the young actress in his new film A Cabin in the Woods. That man is a great judge of talent so if she is good enough for him, she is surely good enough for Twilight. As we learned earlier this week, the cast of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse have already started making their way to Vancouver, BC to begin production of the film … I expect we might be seeing Jodelle chillin’ with her new castmates very soon.

The newly jobless Paula Abdul made her way to the Big Apple yesterday to get away from the drama that exploded here in Hollywood this week when she announced on her official Twitter profile that she is leaving American Idol. With news today that Victoria Beckham has signed on to guest judge the show in her place next season, you might think that Paula would be sweatin’ bullets … desperate to find new work. BUT, a report from TMZ cites inside sources close to the AI drama that reveal that Paula Abdul may yet return to the judge’s table next season after all:

The door isn’t completely slammed on Paula Abdul … Multiple “American Idol” insiders are telling TMZ there is a chance Paula will come back to the show. Reality — better than a good chance. We’re told the conflict is ultimately all about money … and buzz leading up to season 9. But for now, “A.I.” is full speed ahead — auditions for the show are set for tomorrow … without Abdul.

Reports going around yesterday claimed that Paula turned down as much as $8 million to return to the show … in my opinion, if the matter really has come down to a final monetary figure, then she prolly will cave and come back to the show. All of this drama over whether or not Paula will come back to American Idol has really given the show a lot of press leading up to the start of season 9 auditions tomorrow. I would bet good money that the opposing sides will come to an agreement and put this whole matter to rest. Despite her refusal to return to the show this week, I still don’t believe she won’t leave the show for good.

Chris Brown, who was convicted of assaulting Rihanna after he copped a plea bargain with the prosecutor in June, was scheduled to be sentenced in court yesterday here in LA. Apparently, the ruling judge wants to ensure that Brown‘s punishment is comprised of community labor (ie. cleaning public streets) rather than community service (ie. showing up at charity events) and because she could not be assured that her plans for his labor would be fulfilled in his home state of Virgina (where he will serve out his probation/labor) she postponed the sentencing until she could be satisfied:

A judge has delayed sentencing R&B singer Chris Brown on an assault charge to seek more input from Virginia authorities about whether Brown could do community labor in that state. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said at a hearing Wednesday she will sentence Brown on Aug. 27 in the beating of Rihanna, who did not attend the hearing. With Brown in the courtroom, the judge met in her chambers with a prosecutor and defense attorney briefly before Brown’s scheduled sentencing. When she emerged, Schnegg said Virginia had yet to say if it could accommodate her requirement that Brown serve community labor, rather than community service. The judge has said she wants Brown to do community work comparable to graffiti removal or roadside cleanup. The Virginia Department of Corrections said earlier that it typically doesn’t consider whether to supervise a person on probation until after they are sentenced. The 20-year-old Brown pleaded guilty in June to one count of felony assault stemming from the altercation with his then-girlfriend. A plea deal calls for him to serve five years of probation and six months of community labor.

Despite Brown‘s videotaped apology last month, I still think he has much to be sorry and pay for. I am very relieved to hear that the judge is taking his punishment very seriously and is working to ensure that the young man is forced to WORK for his punishment. Community service is practically a joke, especially when it is used on celebs as punishment. I think 6 months of hard labor cleaning up the community streets might do the lad some good. While I personally believe that he’s getting off easy with any punishment that doesn’t involve jail time, I’m somewhat satisfied to learn that his punishment won’t be a cakewalk. We’ll see if that is actually the case.
