Borders has released a 2010 calendar with new images from the upcoming sequel film The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The calendar, which is already available for sale, is priced at a fairly reasonable $16.99 and promises to satisfy the hearty desires of the most ravenous Twilight aficionado. I understand this calendar also comes in locker size so, those of you still engaged in pursuing your scholastic endeavors, can pick up one for school use as well. Brad Pitt is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Parade wherein he promote his new film, Inglorious Bastards, and waxes poetic on raising his children with pseudo-wife Angelina Jolie, on his early days in Hollywood, building a dream home for his family and more. Here Brad‘s Parade cover along with some excerpts from his coverstory interview:

On wanting what’s best for his children
“Would it bother me if a child of mine turns out to be gay? No, not one bit. Listen, I want my kids to live the lives they want to live. I want them to be fulfilled. I hope I teach my kids to be who they really are.”

Why he won’t marry Angelina Jolie
“I have love in my life, a soul mate—absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don’t get married, I replied, ‘Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else.’ I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it—hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I’ve had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment.”

The right to love
“Man, I resent people telling others how to live! It drives me mental! Just the other night, I heard this TV reverend say that Angie and I were setting a bad example because we were living out of wedlock, and people should not be duped by us! It made me laugh. What damn right does anyone have to tell someone else how to live if they’re not hurting anyone? How many times do you think real love comes to someone in a lifetime? If you’re lucky, maybe two or three.”

On becoming a family man
“My life has been about big changes. It’s always been that way. When I go down a path, I take it to the end. Then I take another one. I took the path of not having kids—now it’s time for family. Children are a dominant value in my life now, and they weren’t before. They were always something I thought I’d get around to having when the time was right. It wasn’t what I was really seeking. In a way, I think I had to go and exhaust me before I could be good at being a parent. This family is full of life! There are laughs, aggravations, irritations, but at the end of the day, it’s fun. When life is really good, it’s messy.”

His early days in Hollywood
“I liked to smoke a bit of grass at the time, and I became very sheltered. Then I got bored. I was turning into a damn doughnut, really. So I moved as far away from that as I could. I was done. In Missouri, where I come from, we don’t talk about what we do—we just do it. If we talk about it, it’s seen as bragging.”

Building his dream house
“This was my first architectural experience where I tried doing something myself. It is something I wanted to do for decades. This is like play to me. It’s the only thing that can take me away from any problems I may have. After a few years of work, it came out so nice. Now I’ve got so many damn kids, it’s the only place we could all fit in. We’re double-bunking rooms as it is.”

The full Parade interview can be read HERE starting Friday. Kudos to the Jolie-Pitts for holding off on tying the knot until the practice is legal for same-sex couples in this country. It takes a lot of determination to make a bold stance on marriage like this. Mariah Carey features in a new promo photo on the Livenation website to promote her upcoming string of shows at The Pearl concert venue inside the Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV in September … and I couldn’t help but notice that the new photo looks a lot like an old photo of Mimi from back in the day:

The microphone, the backdrop, the dress … clearly, MC is hearkening back to the days of yore when she was a new chanteuse on the scene … but doesn’t it kinda look more like she has run out of “looks” that she needs to recycle one of her earliest looks?

Angelina Jolie isn’t the only celeb inspiring great works of art today, it turns out that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are also sources of inspiration for emerging artists. Timberbrit is a new opera devoted to the pop stars described as “a tragic tale that imagines Spears‘ last concert, in the final hours of her life” where in Justin Timberlake, her long lost love, sweeps in to help save the day … or something along those lines. I’m not a big opera fan but this really does sound right up my alley ;)

Opera has a long history of over-the-top spectacle and melodramatic plots. Composer Jacob Cooper decided to embrace that excess, creating a contemporary opera that imagines the tragic end of one particularly tempestuous pop diva. The work is called Timberbrit — as in Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. It’s a tragic tale that imagines Spears’ last concert, in the final hours of her life. Timberlake returns after a long absence to win back Spears’ love, but in the end she chooses the audience’s love above all else. Cooper began work on the opera by experimenting with a technique called time-stretching. Using digital audio software, he slowed down Spears’ songs — and suddenly the light pop tunes seemed hauntingly tragic. Phrases like “Hit me baby one more time” took on an entirely different and more weighted meaning. Cooper then collaborated with his performers to create new pieces of music inspired by those slowed-down hits, and writer Yuka Igarashi crafted fresh lyrics using the vernacular of Spears’ songs — tears, love, dreams, innocence. As a doctoral student at Yale, Cooper has looked at the psychological aspects of how traditional operas stretch time during death scenes — the way a dying character in Rigoletto or Boris Godunov, say, will pause to sing a 10-minute aria. Not realistic perhaps, but it packs a punch. Cooper has expanded on that distinctive musical tradition by creating an entire opera enveloped by a fatal slowness of action. The idea is that in Timberbrit, Spears’ prolonged destruction amplifies the tragedy of her downfall. The opera premiered in New York City as a semistaged production in 2008 and is currently being developed into a fully staged version. Meanwhile, the cast and crew of Timberbrit recently shot a music video of Cooper’s song “Worst Fantasy,” inspired by Spears’ “Toxic.” In keeping with the opera’s process, the videographers started with a slowed-down, stretched-out recording of the original, then manipulated it and built on it to create something new. The result: a distillation of Spears’ music videos and public meltdowns that forces viewers to take a second look at both pop-star lives and the way the public devours them.

Well, if Victoria and David Beckham can have their own musical, why can’t Britney and Justin have their own opera? To be honest, I’m still not sold on this particular project … I might have to see it for myself to make better judgment. Hopefully there’ll be more follow-up on this opera in the coming weeks and months. Would YOU pay to see a show like this?

Yesterday afternoon David and I got to spend a few fun hours with our dear friend Marissa who was flying from NYC to Hawaii and had a long layover here in LA … we picked her up, got our asses to Chick-Fil-A and had a grand ol’ time:

Last night I met up with Tamar, Ollie, Caleb, Andy and Jason at Tam’s place for the inaugural meeting of The Turtle Party: Book Club. After our first order of biz (to name the club) was completed, we got to the matter of selecting the book. I came prepared with 4 options and we all decided to go with Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett:

I was the only person to have read the book before and I am more than happy to read it again. After we finish this book, another person will over a selection of titles for us to agree on and we go from there. Here is the first photo of our book club:

Little Miss Lola, the pooch, is our book club mascot … Ollie is working on our secret handshake. We’ve decided to create a website for the book club and a Twitter account can be found HERE if any of y’all wanna follow along. I’m not entirely sure how we’ll be able to integrate those of you out there interested in reading along but … we’re gonna do our best to accommodate all y’all if possible :) If you have any feedback or suggestions, please send them along. We’ll be meeting on the first and third Tuesday of every month … it should be very fun :)

I’m not sure what is going on this evening but I’ve got some reading to do. I’m hoping to finish Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and then moving on to The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold … and, of course, Good Omens. So much reading … I love it!!

I also have to announce that today is my goddaughter Zakiya‘s 4th birthday!!

Can you believe that little Princess Z is already a 4 year old kid?! OY!! I’m looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her when I am home in Detroit this weekend. But please join me in sending lots of Birthday Lurve to Zakiya today! xo

An industrious Pink reader pointed me in the direction of a set of images from Issue 43 of the International Scientology News magazine which showcases the new uniforms that are to be worn by any self-respecting Scientologist this Fall season. Bucket hat? Check! Dracula cape? Check!! A sassy new attitude? Check!!! Have a look at the NEW LOOK of the Church of Scientology:

Clearly old uniforms from Delta Airlines (circa 1971) have been dyed and spruced up a bit in order to be recycled into these new Scientology uniforms. They’re quite snazzy, methinks. I mean, just looking at these ensembles makes my Thetan Level skyrocket! At the very least you have to give the CoS snaps for their bold fashion statements. Back in June we learned that a new celebrity sex tape had hit the Internets that featured Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and since then she has kept pretty quiet about the tape. But this month, Meester is featured on the cover and in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar magazine and she finally opens up about the embarrassing tape that has been making the rounds online for the past couple of months which, according to her, is “not real”. Here is Leighton‘s Harper’s cover and a portion of her coverstory interview:

Leighton Meester understands that being on a buzzed-about show automatically puts her in the spotlight – but she doesn’t have to like it. “I don’t want most of what comes along with all of this,” says the Gossip Girl star in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands Aug. 18. One particular downside of fame is a rumored sex tape of the star with an ex-boyfriend that has allegedly been shopped around. “[The tape] is not real, so it makes me sort of sad,” says the actress. “It’s unfortunate that it got carried as far as it did.” Meester says the rumor has taught her some lessons about life. “I definitely understand the nature of people better now and that the mere allegation of something like that could be headline news. People think it’s real because somebody says it is.” But the star has friends who watch out for her. “I feel like my friends are in a cult because we’re like, ‘No outsiders!’ ” she says. “I’ve never been crazy. I’m a very good girl, to be honest. I don’t do anything to hurt anybody. Honestly, all I ever do is work.” At work, costar Ed Westwick is one person who can vouch for Meester’s sweetness – and her natural good looks. “The first thing I thought when I met Leighton was … hell, this girl’s gorgeous. And she was incredibly sweet.”

I’m confused … how exactly is the explicit tape “not real”? If she means that it was prolly not filmed for public viewing then she’s most likely correct but to say that the sex tape she made with her then boyfriend is “not real” isn’t really accurate. Whatever the case may be, Leighton strikes me as the kind of woman who learns from her mistakes and I highly doubt she’ll ever get messed up in a sex tape scandal like this again (unlike, say, Vanessa Hudgens, who clearly didn’t learn her lesson the first time nekkid pics of her made their way to the Internets). After publicly complaining that the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra action figure The Baroness based on her likeness is “cross-eyed and has the biggest chin you have ever seen”, Sienna Miller happy played with her toy alongside her castmates Channing Tatum (with his action figure based on his G.I. Joe character Conrad Duke Hauser) and Marlon Wayans at the Fuse studios in NYC yesterday for an appearance on No. 1 Countdown to promote their new movie (opening in theaters this Friday). Additionally, Sienna Miller confesses in a new interview with GQ magazine that her extramarital affair with the very married Balthazar Getty last year made her look “really awful” … and on that account, she is correct … but the fact that she realizes the err of her ways might show some maturity from Ms. Miller after all:

Her reputation went from glamorous free spirit to home wrecker when she fell for a married father of four. And in the aftermath of her affair with millionaire actor Balthazar Getty, Sienna Miller has admitted it ‘probably looked awful’. ‘I probably seem like not a particularly nice person, not a girl’s girl,’ the 27-year-old actress confided. And yet this acknowledgment of questionable behaviour came with the excuse that it was all just part of her rebellious character. ‘I think if you put a camera in anyone’s life and document it daily for six years, from the age of 21 to 27, there are going to be things that aren’t always pretty,’ she declared. ‘Those are the rebellious years, the years of self discovery. I’ve never been someone who has conformed, and I think my response to that level of attention was to pretend it didn’t exist.’ While Getty’s wife Rosetta went into hiding to look after their four children, Miss Miller’s rebellious streak saw her pictured topless with her lover on holiday. But as she explained to GQ magazine, she was not perfect and could not live her life trying to please other people. ‘I do think sometimes people get morally superior without understanding situations,’ she said. ‘And the situation I got into [with Getty] was not ideal but it happened and if I could go back and be more responsible, I would. Well, I probably would be less naive about ignoring the fact that people care. I’ve always kind of done exactly what my instincts said. I have a good brain on me but I’ve never really used it when it came to making decisions about love, which has been a blessing and a curse.’ She added: ‘I definitely have been foolish. I’ve made apologies to people I needed to, but I can’t apologise to people I don’t know for things they don’t understand.’ Miss Miller, who claims Getty is now just a friend, is probably better known for her love life than her movie roles. Before Getty, she had well-documented romances with actors Jude Law and Rhys Ifans. She has also been linked to James Bond star Daniel Craig, musician Jamie Burke and Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen. The actress, whose new film GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra opens this week, said she knew she was regarded as ‘sexually manipulative’, but insisted this was not the case. ‘I’m supposed to be this complete slapper, that’s my reputation,’ she said. ‘But actually I was in a relationship from 19 to 21 with (the fashion designer) Dave [Neville], 21 to 24 with Jude, then 25 to 26 with Rhys, and then Balthazar. And then a few dalliances, three months here and there, but I’ve never been like a shitter. I’ve actually been kind of single for the past year. I’ve had somebody on the end of the phone maybe, but I haven’t been living with anyone or been in a proper relationship, and it’s been really great. And now I’m completely on my own. I think I’ve grown up a lot.’

Hallelujah! Sienna Miller is too pretty a woman to be chasing married men when there is a world of single men that would kill to be with her. I can’t say that I endorse her cheating ways on the “rebellious years” of “self discovery”, that kind of behavior is more an act of immature selfishness, but she seems to finally see the error of her ways … which is great news for everyone. Here’s hoping she can move forward with this new knowledge and carry on in a more respectable manner. I don’t think anyone expects sainthood from the young actress but if she wants to earn people’s respect, she’s going to have to start acting in a respectful manner. She appears to be on the right track … here’s hoping she sticks to the semi-straight and narrow.
