That’s What ‘Friends’ Are For

The TV Guide
July 30th, 2009

David and I have this thing we do where we record all the reruns of the hit 90’s series Friends that air on the various cable networks and we save them for watching while we eat. I realize that many families do not watch TV while they eat but, well, we are not one of those families. This practice is an old one for us … we used to eat and watch Golden Girls eps but since we’ve watched the entire series a couple of times already, we moved on to Friends:

Altho I spent much of my day reading The Catcher in the Rye (I’m almost done), I had to make time for food … and, of course, Friends. This info isn’t really all that important but it was part of my day yesterday. I’ve been trying to keep things pretty quiet this week because next week is going to be a bit bizzy and then I fly off to Detroit for the following weekend. In the meantime, David and I are just trying to keep things as normal and boring as possible … but with all the Friends to watch, well, it’s not all that boring ;)

Tonight, David and I are meeting up with Kirsten, Darion and his friend Eric for sushi dinner … it’ll be nice to see those guys. Who knows what hi-jinx might ensue?!

We are not one of those families either. We are watching season 2 of Friends while eating dinner this week! I forgot how much I love each character’s personality!

“My skin is soapy, and my hair is wet, and Tegrin spelled backward is Nirget … Lather, rinse, repeat, and lather, rinse, repeat, and lather, rinse, repeat, as needed. “

  2. Amanda Says:

I watch one episode of Friends every night and it just gets better and better everytime I see it.

  3. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

After finishing “the Strain” I was perusing my local bookstore and I seriously picked up “The Catcher in the Rye”. I barely remember it in High School but passed. I still have no clue what to read next!

  4. katyannes Says:

LOVE that tradition! i love how friends reruns have yet to get old or lose their luster :)

  5. heather Says:

I am a HUGE “Friends” fan. I own ALL 10 seasons on DVD and will LOL like it’s the first time I have watched it! I <3 Pheobe!!!

  6. Margie Says:

I do the same thing! Either I’m eating or cooking while it’s on. Yesterday’s episode, on TBS, was the one about the dress and how Monica kept wearing the dress which was Emily’s. Tate Donovan, Joshua on the show, was also there as Rachel’s love interest and then I felt for Jennifer Aniston bc they used to date in real life and dumped she became. Same thing with Brad Pitt. He’s on the show and BAM, dumped again. Poor thing. Stop putting your lovers on the show with you, fool!

  7. Jo Says:

I do the exact.same.thing. Glad to know I’m not alone in my friends-as-comfort-food addiction.

  8. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Margie — LOL, yes we watched that ep too. LOVE ‘The One with all the Wedding Dresses’ ep :)

  9. Richard Says:

That is so funny that there are others out that do that!! We watch Will n Grace while we eat b/c we watched all of Golden Girls and then Friends!

  10. Margie Says:

    I am such a rambler…

  11. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Richard — OH yes, we’ve already ran thru all the eps of ‘Will & Grace’, too :)

  12. Katy Says:

You’re rich. Why don’t you buy the Series Box Set?

  13. Leslie Says:

LOVE LOVE friends!! I so miss that series. I still watch the episodes almost everyday and haha I also watch it while I eat. I can’t eat something at home without watching Friends or Sex and the City. It’s a grand tradition Trent!!!

What’s useful for me is having my friends in my portable dvd player in my room. I always play it while in my room cleaning or doing stuff around my house.

  14. Leslie Says:

Btw…. guess who loved watching Golden Girls — Ross Gellar! He mentioned it on the show.

  15. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

    @Leslie — LOL! I watch ‘SaTC’ while I blog … I’m watching it right now ;)

  16. Shaniqua Says:

    Friends never gets old :)

  17. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Katy — I’m rich? LOL! I’m actually not … but it’s more fun watching the eps as they air daily.

  18. Desdemona Says:

Trent, haha, I always joke that when on a date and guys ask me ‘what i like to do for fun?’ I should say “eat while watching tv.” That’s really one of my favorite things!!

  19. liza Says:

ok…me and my son (he’s 16 and kind of grew up watching freinds) do the exact same thing. even though we have the complete collection we still dvr the eps that air daily and watch while eating dinner…its our time. we can watch over & over. and I don’t go to sleep at night untill after i watch the 2 eps of SaTC that air at 11…and yes i have that collection too. funny having our little rituals….

  20. tami Says:

we watch them too while we eat dinner, so funny! my husband likes to complain about “how can you still watch these everyday”, yet he still laughs! simply the best show ever!!

  21. MB Says:

    OMG!

I never comment but, my boyfriend and I have all 10 seasons of “Friends” on DVD and it is our show to watch while we eat!

    hahaha too funny!

  22. Daniella Says:

Meee too! If Friends is on I am watching no matter what lol, while i eat, while i clean, etc or SATC. i even have my hubby watching and reciting Friends lol luv it =) Trent luv u!

  23. b dazz Says:

sounds like Friends-while-eating is an American pastime…my partner and i do the exact same thing. it IS so comforting to watch sitcom reruns!

  24. Hillary Says:

My husband and I do that too! We tivo George Lopez (it’s not that old I know, but we never saw that show when it was on) and now Home Improvement and watch together when we eat. We especially like watching shows like Home Improvement because we grew up on those shows and love discussing what we thought about when we originally saw the episodes. I love Friends, but there hasn’t been enough time passed just yet for me– it still makes me sad that it’s not on anymore!

  25. Maggie Says:

I’m rereading The Catcher in the Rye as I type! HOoray for the classics.

  26. Carrie Says:

I LOVE friends… like have seen every season multiple times & know the lines to most of the eps…. I know, I’m pathetic! :)

  27. diana Says:

We do the same thing! And no joke I’m currently reading catcher in the rye as well!

  28. Sarah Says:

Your routine with David was seriously the sweetest thing I’ve heard all week. I loff it! And btw your recommendation on the Strain gave me nightmares for the past two weeks. Damn Mr. Leech.

  29. Michelle Says:

Yay for FRIENDS!! I’m a serious Friends fan and I’m currently in the middle of watching the series AGAIN (I’m in the middle of Season 6 right now) and yet whenever it’s on tv I will still sit there and watch it, commericals and all!!

  30. Michelle Says:

Haha it’s funny to see how so many people do the exact same thing to the exact same shows… it just goes to show how much pop culture has dug itself into everyday life. :)

  31. Ally Says:

My roomate in undergrad and I used to ALWAYS watch Friends while we ate :). She had all of the seasons on DVD (once they ended since it was still on most of the years we were there). Last Christmas my husband bought me the big boxed set :). I have a TV on DVD addiction.

  32. Adam Bomb Says:

I LOVE Friends! I’ve seen every episode multiple times, and at least a couple times a week, some situation will arise that makes me think of something that happened on the show.

  33. Neil Ant Says:

    I miss Phoebe Buffay ALOT!

  34. CB Says:

OMG Trent! My hubby and I do the exact same thing with Gilmore Girls! LMAO!!!

  35. Kayla Says:

I do that too :) , I tend to watch Family Guy or Reba while I eat.

  36. Danny Says:

@trent, I think people get the idea that you are rich b/c you don’t work a normal job like the rest of us but have time to sit around and blog about celebrities all day and your social life and get invited to movie premieres so either you are a trust fund baby or you someone have the best connections in the world to make money off this sight. No offense. I never liked friends, always thought it was yuppy humor. I hate Gilmore Girls too, I like watching the Simpsons while I eat.

  37. Angie Says:

Friends is still my all-time favorite show. My hubby and I have watched all the seasons several times. It never gets old for us. I just borrowed them all to my brother and his wife and they are loving it.

  38. fable Says:

OMG! that show can never get old! I still watch it every now and then!! Love the show!!

  39. Katie Says:

hahahah I LOVE FRIENDS!! Best TV show ever made. I have all ten seasons on DVD and have watched the series multiple times! I’m on Season 4 right now with my boyfriend as we’re watching it together for the second time :) Love it!
