A group of concerned citizens who live near Michael Jackson‘s famed Neverland Ranch in Los Olivos, CA are banning together to fight any attempt to make the property into a Graceland-type attraction which would attract hundreds of thousands of MJ fans for many, many, many years to come in the wake of his untimely death last month. The group called Never! are planning to thwart any and every attempt by anyone to move forward with plans to make Neverland Ranch a tourist attraction … and, in the end, they might even have a very solid fighting chance of getting their way:

Neighbors of Neverland are organizing against any move to turn Michael Jackson’s former home into a tourist destination that could disturb the area’s rural tranquility. Residents of the rural Santa Ynez Valley announced a new group Monday called “Never!” It is backed by area community organizations that want to head off any attempts to convert the Neverland ranch in remote Los Olivos into a commercial venue, spokesman Bob Field said. Field said the area doesn’t have the roads, police or other infrastructure to support crowds drawn to a Graceland-like tourist attraction, which he said would disrupt the enclave’s tranquility. Such a development would require the property to be rezoned from agricultural to commercial use, a lengthy process that would require a series of public hearings where residents could express their opposition. Santa Barbara County spokeswoman Nicole Koon said officials have not been contacted by the properties owners or the Jackson family about a zoning change. Property co-owner Thomas Barrack, meanwhile, hasn’t proposed developing the site, but Field said the Santa Ynez Valley residents in his group want solid reassurances that he won’t. “We have received mixed messages, some reassuring, some troubling,” he said. “We’d like clear, concrete signs that there are no plans to pursue turning this into a tourist attraction.” The Los Olivos Business Organization, which consists of the wineries, restaurants and boutiques along the town’s short commercial strip, released a separate statement Monday stating its opposition to a Graceland-like venue in its midst. Owen Blicksilver, a spokesman for Colony Capital LLC, the Los Angeles-based firm where Barrack is chairman and CEO, had no immediate comment. Field, the former chairman of a county-appointed community planning committee, said he was suspicious of Barrack’s motives for inviting dozens of local politicians and opinion leaders to the ranch for tours, followed by lavish breakfasts or barbecue dinners. Field, who joined one of the tours, said a Barrack representative assured guests at the event that there were no immediate plans to attempt to have Jackson buried at the ranch or to convert it to a tourist attraction. But the representative did not unequivocally disavow such plans. Field was also concerned that staff members distributed baseball caps embroidered with “Neverland 2009″ to guests.
Honestly, I wouldn’t think that any organization would be able to stop an attempt to make Neverland into Graceland primarily because the memory of Michael Jackson will live on forever and will continue to inspire rabid fandom. BUT, because the ranch is located in a very rural area that lacks the paved roads required to accommodate hordes of visitors, the Never! group may end up getting their way. That being said, I think it would be a shame for that sprawling location to go unused … except for the rural surroundings, it is THE PERFECT LOCATION to set up a memorial tourist destination for the late Michael Jackson. I’m sure the fight, should there be one, to make Neverland Ranch into a substantial tourist attraction will rage for years. I, personally, think the ranch should become MJ‘s Graceland … but, then again, I don’t live in the area.

Yuck! One Graceland is more than enough.
I think it should become a Graceland type musuem! Nothing wrong with that.
If I lived near it I wouldn’t want a bunch of MJ crazies stalking around my home either.
If I recall correctly, didn’t Michael think that place was tainted after the cops raided it during his trial?
And isn’t it true that he never wet back there because of that?
I don’t think he’d be happy knowing that is where people chose to set up a memorial site if so.
Los Olivios is such a beautiful and quaint winery town – I’d hate for it to get over run with tacky MJ memorabilia and wedding chapel’s.
Wouldn’t it be good for the economy of the region? If it is done tastefully.
I would be pissed if I bought a home in a quiet area and then my neighborhood was turned into an amusement park – Totally unfair to all the neighbors (unless they get a cut from the profits)
I used to live in that area and there really is not the infrastructure to support a Graceland-type attraction. There is one main highway that winds around the Santa Inez hills, and it could never stand the onslaught of traffic.
That being said, I myself would love to see the place!
If I remember correctly, I read somewhere shortly after he died that there are some local laws that would prevent this? I really hope it doesn’t become more of an attraction than it already is. Just because there IS space to do it doesn’t mean it should happen.
Trent, personally, I think you being insensitive to the people who live there. Has this world not had enough? Is it not enough the state of California had to pay $1.4 million for his funeral. Its tacky & was the sight of many of his abusings of kids. Shut the place down already. Plus as many people have stated, it CANNOT handle that type of traffic. Enough is enough.
If the area could be deemed commercial property and the people could sell their land for a great price, it might benefit the people in the surrounding area BUT they clearly don’t want that. I think he is connected with other places just as strongly, such as where he was raised, that could support this sort of museum.
While MJ’s fans have a right to celebrate his life and his legacy, they certainly shouldn’t be permitted to trample all over the existing property of his neighbours around the Neverland Ranch. The whole problem I have with this idea, Trent, is that his fans *don’t* live there, and probably think nothing about the impact such a tourist attraction will have on a largely rural area where people value their privacy a great deal. I don’t think they appreciate the idea of thousands of cars roaming around their roads, Jackson fans constantly in town, and transforming their quiet community into a major tourist attraction.
A proposal like this detracts from more than the land value, it seriously impacts the residents of the area. The infrastructure really isn’t there to support the influx. Constant noise and traffic are headaches that go above and beyond someone wanting to share in a bit of Jackson’s life. It was bad enough, I’m sure, when he lived there and the media circus chased around. But they deserve their peace and quiet without having to move, or fear for a lot of people coming in who don’t think anything of the area they are visiting.
I’m with the “Nevers”
Those people should not have to even consider selling their property for money just to get away so there can be a tourist attraction. I think that would be so annoying…having all those tourists around, totally defeats those people’s choice to live there.
Enough with the molestation claims already (smoo). Not proven.
@Smoo- I TOTALLY agree!! If people feel the need to set up a memorial, do it in a non-residential area.
I don’t see why they can’t have an “off-property”site where the fans buy tix and wait for a “tour bus” to take them to the ranch to see it. All they would have to do is make it a gated comunity that only residents can get into and “the tour bus”. That way it keeps crowd control and noise level down. The gated community part however should be footed by the Jacksons if thats what they want to do with Neverland.
These people are just afraid that this will turn their town into some gaudy tourist attraction with JACKO themed gift shops and tourist traps.
I will build one called the Wacko Jacko Molestor Museum. So people will not forget the freakish parts of Jacko’s life.
Oh Trent Trent Trent “Be Come” instead of Become…sad sad sad.
