Last night David and I finally got our asses to a movie theater to see a movie, something I’ve been wanting to do for weeks now, and we decided to see Orphan. To be honest, David isn’t a big movie person but I know he likes scary movies so … Orphan was our pic. I heard that there is a twist ending so I did everything humanly possible to avoid finding out what it is — and I am so glad that I did cuz that movie mind-effed me so bad, I totally didn’t see it coming … and was left ENTIRELY disturbed as a result:

To be honest, I can totally see how some folks might hate the movie and think the “twist” is stupid but those people are no fun. Orphan is full of great suspense and circumstances that make the almost implausible story totally believable. I ate it up — hook, line and sinker! I ain’t gonna lie … I was creeped out … but the ending, HOLY SHIZZ, wow … I was quite literally left slack-jawed. Kudos to Isabelle Fuhrman who plays little orphan Esther, her performance was stellar. I also loved Aryana Engineer, for a child actress she was really great. The movie is ridiculously fun, I loved it. It deffo should win the award for best use of blacklight paint — hands down, genius! DO TRY AND NOT FIND OUT what the twist is if you think you’ll see the movie. Hearing about it first will sound dumb and will ruin the movie … if you see it cold and go with it, you will be horribly surprised :)
I spent much of the rest of my night going thru my concert ticket stubs from all the shows I’ve seen over the years. Since about 2004, I’ve been tossing my concert tickets into a box but from 1991 – 2004 I kept them organized in albums. I decided it was time to catalog my tickets so that’s what I did. I also did an accounting and figured out that I’ve seen Tori Amos 41 times (soon to be 42), Nine Inch Nails 20 times (soon to be 28), Marilyn Manson 13 times, Prince 11 times, Liz Phair 10 times, Juliana Hatfield and Britney Spears 9 times and Siouxisie & the Banshees/The Creatures/Siouxsie 8 times. I’ve also seen Garbage 6 times, Madonna 5 times and Morrissey 3 times … but the aforementioned acts are my most attended shows. And, much to my chagrin, I remembered that my first concert was C+C Music Factory. I’ll go hide my face in shame now.
No plans for tonight … we’ll see where the day takes me.

I really have no desire to see this film because I’m more of the romantic-comedy-chick-flicks chick, but Trent’s little review made me extremely curious. Since I still don’t plan on seeing it, I searched for the surprise ending and boy, am I freaked! That’s a really weird twist. Seriously, it kinda makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
ps. the little girl who plays Esther is so adorable though, so it kinda makes me feel better!
@ brenda my 1st concert was Paula Abdul Under her Spell tour and Color Me Bad was the opening act :) It was a fun 1sr concert
My first concert was Alanis Morisette haha I was in the 6th grade and she was TERRRRIBLE live! 9Although really, what did we expect).
Ha ha ha!!! C+C Music Factory, that’s awesome! My first concert was Milli Vanilli!
You could feel the hate for Esther in the theater, it was a good movie!
The twist was awesome. It was one messed up movie. My first concert was NIN the Downward Spiral tour in 1996. Not bad for a first concert….
My first concert was Dave Matthews Band maybe about 10 years ago (I’m 24).
I have to watch horror movies by myself because my friends and boyfriend get too freaked out. I was debating seeing this but decided on a whim and I’m glad I did! Esther was f*cking psycho and I LOVED how they alluded about her paintings right in the beginning (paint splattered across the distributors). I luckily did not read about the twist but had read about the harmful things she does through out the movie.
I gotta see this movie now – just for the twist.
shit, i googled the tiwst ending cause i was curious and didn’t think i would see the movie but i ended up seeing it last night- i loved it though it was so creepyy
I’m pretty sure my first concert was Paula Abdul at Pineknob. :)
@Sherri — Yes, my dear, we went to that show together — according to my ticket stub collection, the show took place on July 12, 1992 :) By far, my most favorite show that you and I went to was NIN in Grand Rapids, MI in January ’95 when you got beat up in the mosh pit, set on fire and then accidentally sat in beer … good times ;) Have I ever told you that I LOVE you so much for still going to shows with me even after that incident? You and I saw quite a few Dave Koz concerts too. I believe that I’ve seen more concerts WITH YOU than with anyone else :) XOXOXO
Trent,
I agree I love, love, love this movie. I thought the ending was great. It was a different ending than any other movie I’ve seen so it makes more interesting.
my first concert was the POINTER SISTERS… I was 9 and it was free (and they had bomb songs)…don’t judge me.
Succumbed to the hype about the twist ending and saw it today with my dad. It was excellent. Knowing the ending beforehand definitely didn’t take from the surprise. Great movie. Isabelle Fuhrman was terrific as was Aryana Engineer – in fact, this little girl was absolutely adorable. I’m glad I read your review, Trent!
BTW, first concert ever was BSB back in the day! My dad was my date then too!
ester is reallt an old wman looking to do the man wo scary
I love love love this film. really glad i didn’t spoil it!
Peter Sarsgaard is SO good-looking!! And I could NOT stop laughing when i realized that daniel is ‘the flash’ from ‘Daddy Day Care’. Man I love that kid.
You know, the surprise ‘twist’ at the end really didn’t surprise me. I saw it coming, but I think that’s more because I’ve seen other movies and shows with similar stuff going on in regards to Esther’s ‘secret’. I do dig her Russian accent though. It amused me the whole movie because all I could picture was Esther’s body with Stalin’s face and a bottle of vodka in hand. But, I think that’s just me.
It was a good movie, though. So thumbs up for the movie people and actors who pulled it off so fantastically.
Also, since I forgot to add this, I think my very first concert was Streetlight Manifesto. Saw them again at Warped Tour just over the summer and was still in love with them. Next concert on my list to attend is Nine Inch Nails or Queen, since I heard they were going on tour again with their new singer and such. It won’t be the same as Freddy, but I’m sure it’ll still be amazing.
Hi there, loved this movie!!! I was wondering if you could help me, i’m trying to find a site that has pictures of esther’s black light paintings, especially the ones of her and john as i am an artist and want to try and paint them, i have no idea where to find/buy these pictures any help would be much appreciated?
Thanks Amy
