Little ‘Orphan’ Esther
The TV Guide

Last night David and I finally got our asses to a movie theater to see a movie, something I’ve been wanting to do for weeks now, and we decided to see Orphan. To be honest, David isn’t a big movie person but I know he likes scary movies so … Orphan was our pic. I heard that there is a twist ending so I did everything humanly possible to avoid finding out what it is — and I am so glad that I did cuz that movie mind-effed me so bad, I totally didn’t see it coming … and was left ENTIRELY disturbed as a result:

To be honest, I can totally see how some folks might hate the movie and think the “twist” is stupid but those people are no fun. Orphan is full of great suspense and circumstances that make the almost implausible story totally believable. I ate it up — hook, line and sinker! I ain’t gonna lie … I was creeped out … but the ending, HOLY SHIZZ, wow … I was quite literally left slack-jawed. Kudos to Isabelle Fuhrman who plays little orphan Esther, her performance was stellar. I also loved Aryana Engineer, for a child actress she was really great. The movie is ridiculously fun, I loved it. It deffo should win the award for best use of blacklight paint — hands down, genius! DO TRY AND NOT FIND OUT what the twist is if you think you’ll see the movie. Hearing about it first will sound dumb and will ruin the movie … if you see it cold and go with it, you will be horribly surprised :)

I spent much of the rest of my night going thru my concert ticket stubs from all the shows I’ve seen over the years. Since about 2004, I’ve been tossing my concert tickets into a box but from 1991 – 2004 I kept them organized in albums. I decided it was time to catalog my tickets so that’s what I did. I also did an accounting and figured out that I’ve seen Tori Amos 41 times (soon to be 42), Nine Inch Nails 20 times (soon to be 28), Marilyn Manson 13 times, Prince 11 times, Liz Phair 10 times, Juliana Hatfield and Britney Spears 9 times and Siouxisie & the Banshees/The Creatures/Siouxsie 8 times. I’ve also seen Garbage 6 times, Madonna 5 times and Morrissey 3 times … but the aforementioned acts are my most attended shows. And, much to my chagrin, I remembered that my first concert was C+C Music Factory. I’ll go hide my face in shame now.

No plans for tonight … we’ll see where the day takes me.

I EFFING LOVED this movie. I usually don’t do horror flicks because they suck so bad most of the time, but the twists is what did it for me.

The little girl, not Esther, is also so freaking cute. :)

  2. Jill says:

hahahha Trent, C & C Music Factory is hilarious! Mine was just as bad- bon jovi LOL!

  3. la princesa says:

I can’t do horror movies. I read the spoiler for Orphan (had to know what the ribbon meant!!) & couldn’t sleep last night! My imagination kept creating images about the twist. Spooky! ;p
Also, my first concert was The Jets. Remember them?! I wonder what they’re up to…hmm…

  4. Mariah says:

The parents’ first names in the movie are John and Kate. …Wow.

  5. Janet says:

Yeah, I have no plans to see this either…so I googled the spoiler, and wowza, that’s definitely an unexpected (and sick) twist!

And Trent, your concert going history is super impressive! I’ve never seen any artist more than twice, and I go to a lot of concerts! My first concert was NKOTB is 1990, and I saw them again last month, now making them one of my concert repeats. :)

  6. Mr. Gyllenhaal says:

I can’t wait to see this!!! WHOOOOO!!!

  7. Lana says:

LOL my friend figured out the twist when they started promoting the film, this movie was way predictable. It’s all because they say “YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE THE ENDING!” then we just think a little outside the box and voila. No thanks, I’ll pass.

  8. Karmapolice says:

My first concert was NKOTB at Joe Louis Arena in 1990. I was 8. The shame I still harbor from that.

  9. Mrs. Clarkson says:

This is not helping my desire to see the movie… LMAO @ the John and Kate, tho. As far as concerts, my first was Menudo, I was like 5, still MUCH more lame than yours. And I have not seen anyone more than Kelly Clarkson…and, I am NOT ashamed, just look at my SN. ;)

  10. nicole says:

k so i just read the spoiler…and HOLY SHIT! hahahah..i actually kinda want to see this movie now.
as for the concerts…..my first one was in 1990 ( i was 4 LOL) and it was NKOTB! and trent i saw C+C music factory live 2 years ago. dont be ashamed! lol they put on a good show.

  11. DJWhoop says:

that is one scarry looking little beotch!

  12. Brenda says:

First concert was Color Me Badd. It’s a little shameful, but I find it hilarious instead of shameful really. It’s kind of like a badge of (dis)honor. I tried not to find out the spoiler for this movie, but when I went to look at the reviews for this movie on Fandango the very FIRST review was a total spoiler right at the beginning. It said spoiler alert, but immediately followed by what it was so it wasn’t really an alert. I was pissed. But I still want to see the movie. The previews have been creeping me out for months. Creepy kids are freaky.

  13. CHASE says:

I knew the spoiler awhile ago and I’ll wait for DVD. Anyways, I am proud to say that my first was, in fact, Britney Spears this past April. I’m a proud man to say that BSPEARS popped my concert cherry. :

out of morbid curiosity, i googled the ending. um, what?!!? HUH?!!? but knowing the ending has made me want to see it even more (we’re going tonight) so i can figure out exactly how that ties in to the rest of the movie.

love your love of music! my first concert was either New Kids on the Block (i heart Donnie 4-ever!) or New Edition. My grandma gave me some cool points by taking to me to my 2nd ever concert–Ice Cube/Public Enemy. lol

  15. WendyD says:

Trent – what kind of album do you put your tickets in? Just a regular photo album? I too have stacks of tickets that need to live somewhere.

(and I’ve seen Harry Connick, Jr. 52 times… so far)

and no shame in an NKOTB concert! I never saw them back in the day (and had no interest), but I’ve seen them 3 times this spring/summer and every show has been a blast!

    • @WendyD — regular photo album, with band stickers all over them. i like the ones from Target, with the ring binder … just in case you need to add pages. they also have space to write notes, like which bands opened for the main act.

  16. Harper says:

This movie legit freaked me out! I absolutely loved it though.

  17. kellye says:

    Harry Connick Jr 52 TIMES?!?!?!?

    Now that’s a fan.

  18. Maddie says:

As someone that was adopted I refuse to see this movie because of the way it negatively portrays adoption. I LOVE horror movies but this is too much. I read last week that Warner Bros had to remove the line ” It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own” from the film because it stirred so much controversy. Adoptions portrayed in a negative light enough as it is.. too bad because I was curious to know the twist! x

my 1st concert was backstreet boys! 1998

  19. Z says:

My first concert was the Monkees reunion tour when I was 9 (summer 1987) and the opening band was Weird Al Yankovich. ;)

  20. Dani says:

That movie creeped me out! Unfortunately I knew the twist before I saw it, but I was still thinking “WTF” as the ending was playing out. It’s one of those movies that leaves you thinking “what the hell did I just see?!” lol
