Kristin Cavallari Calls Her Return To ‘The Hills’ A ‘Step Backwards’ For Her Career
Kristin Cavallari, who starred on MTV’s Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and is about to make her debut as the lead protagonist on The Hills this coming Fall, gave an interview to The New York Post to promote her new film Van Wilder: Freshman Year (straight-to-DVD release). Among the questions asked of Cavallari about this Van Wilder film, she also answered a few questions about her return to Reality TV and what it means to her career to be starring on The Hills. Judging by her assessment of appearing on The Hills, it sounds as if the lass is biting the hand that feeds her by saying her stint on the show feels like a “step backwards” for her career aspirations. Here is a portion of KC’s interview with the NYP’s Pop Watch:

Following in Audrina Patridge’s wah-wah wake is Kristin Cavallari, who nabbed the lead role in “Van Wilder: Freshman Year.” As Kaitlin, the plucky army brat who falls for Van’s signature brand of amour, she is totally opposite of what you’re expecting. And that’s the point. Although Kristin’s returning to “The Hills” this September, acting is her true passion and she plans to be it for the long haul. No topic was off limits as we talked about preparing for her biggest role to date, why she went back to reality TV and what she really thinks of “The Hills”!
PopWrap: Were you dubious about starring in a threequel?
Kristin Cavallari: Yes definitely! And filming it, you always think great things, but you never know how it’s going to turn out … but I was pleasantly surprised.
PW: Do you like watching yourself on screen?
Kristin: I hate it! I hate watching myself on screen! I absolutely hate it, it’s so hard to watch. I can see myself in magazines, but watching on TV or movies is like “ugh.”
PW: I’d imagine your background in reality TV makes it harder to land feature films, true?
Kristin: The “Van Wilder” producers didn’t want to hire me, I had to audition three times for this movie. They thought I was just some girl from reality TV, which I understand. It just makes me fight harder.
PW: You mentioned earlier that being on reality TV makes it hard for you to book movies, then why return to “The Hills”?
Kristin: It was a really hard choice for me. MTV’s been asking me to do it for years. I 100% want to be an actress, but with “Van Wilder: Freshman Year” coming out and a few other movies, I thought this would be an exciting way for my fans to reconnect with me because they haven’t seen what I’ve been up to since “Laguna Beach.” I thought it would help and, after all, it’s what mad me famous int he first place.
PW: Has your small appearance in the season finale affected the way casting directors see you yet?
Kristin: I haven’t been able to audition for anything since contractually MTV won’t let me. But I’ll telly you this, I’ve gotten a lot more phone calls about going on other shows since.
PW: Did you always want to be an actress?
Kristin: I always wanted to, but I just never thought it was a realistic goal. I was in Chicago and Colorado before that, so I never thought I had a shot. But when these opportunities arose, I thought, why not.
PW: So if “Laguna” never happened, what would you be doing now?
Kristin: I would have gone to college to study broadcast journalism. I wanted to go to Emerson College and would have tried to become a news anchor.
PW: Did you ever go to college?
Kristin: I went to one class at Loyola Marymount. I took public speaking where we went around the room and everyone had to say their name. I said, “Hi, I’m Kristin Cavallari from Laguna Beach” and that’s when “Laguna” was actually on TV, so I just decided it wasn’t the right time.
PW: Do you want to go back to college eventually?
Kristin: No. Even in high school … it was just enough. I’m really happy with what I’m doing. I read a lot of books, you know. So, no. I have no urge to go back to college.
PW: Down the road, where do you see your career going?
Kristin: I want to do great movies that are number one at the box office and also independent movies that are dark and miserable. I see myself with a career like Cameron Diaz — she does “What Happens in Vegas” and then “My Sister’s Keeper,” so I want to do it all!
PW: Is she your biggest inspiration?
Kristin: Cameron is number one, but I also like Charlize Theron and Sienna Miller … I’m going off looks too [laughs].
PW: How has being back on reality TV been for you?
Kristin: Well, we’ve only filmed for two weeks, so it’s hard to say, but I can tell you that it’s … everyone’s been … it’s been hard for them to adjust to me I think. So that in and of itself has caused a lot of drama.
PW: Is it weird going from a legit movie to doing loosely scripted reality TV?
Kristin: With “The Hills,” they have everything down to such a science, you don’t have to think about blocking. But doing “The Hills” has made me want to act so badly. I need a challenge and kinda feel like “The Hills” is taking me a step backwards. But that just makes me want to act that much more and try that much harder.
PW: So we shouldn’t expect to see you starring on “The Hills” in 2020?
Kristin: God no [laughs]. I would have not signed up for that. I’m only tied in to two seasons … so we’ll see how things play out.
I have to admit, I’ve got NOTHING but lurve for my girl Kristin Cavallari … and, to be honest, I think her aim to be the next “Cameron Diaz” is a pretty achievable goal. Cameron is a pretty successful actress even if she’s not that talented (ie. she’ll never be an award contender and, yet, she still gets a lot of work). I think KC can have a similar career. While she feels that The Hills may be a “step backwards” for her, I think it’s a great way to give her career a shot of publicity … that may help her career in the long run. Look at where starring on The Hills took Lauren LC Conrad. She’s a New York Times best selling author these days. Not too shabby. I love you KC, keep your chin up and have fun with The Hills. It could turn out to be the best career decision you ever made.

I hate that you love her. I just think she sounds like a total beyotch in this article… I jsut cannot agree with you on her, Trent… and I love you so much!! Oh well, we will agree to disagree!!
July 14th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
The reason why Lauren is so successful is because she’s a classy wholesome girl-next-door. Thats why a lot of people can connect with her and they see themselves in her shoes… thats what makes the show so interesting to watch. On the other hand, Kristin comes off to me as a whiny, bratty and mean girl who wants to extend her 15 minutes of fame. Why would anyone want such a fake drama queen to narrate the show? Beats me. Still, I’ve watched The Hills loyally for years so I guess I might watch the first couple of episodes when they come out to see what it will become but for now I’m not impressed at all.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Oh man… I wish I’d known a long time ago that a good substitute for college was “reading a lot of books”!!!!!!
July 14th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
trent your cool man but you are delusional on this one, no way she can be the next cameron diaz… she belongs in reality TV, where she started and where she belongs, what in the hell was she doing her time off from laguna beach… featuring in Gavin Degraws music video… She shoots she scores … if she wanted to be an actress she could have done it during that time period and shouldnt have even agreed to be on the hills DUH
July 14th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
Correction, Cameron Diaz has actually been nominated for several of the big awards.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
@yeahright — which she did not win.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Delusional, talentless bitch. That is all.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
@Joey – no kidding, why did I waste all that money on a degree! Where was this vapid, self-absorbed beyotch with her sage advice back then!!
July 14th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
hahaha@Kyleigh
July 14th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
She wants to be taken seriously as an actress, and she thinks The Hills is a step backwards?? A straight-to-DVD Van Wilder flick and a lame party planning CW show are not something to help your cause girly! @Trent – time to join Team LC, she’s going places!
July 14th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
I think Cameron is a very talented actress. Kristen just seems like a snob that doesn’t want to work for it. Going to 3 auditions for the lead in a film is pretty standard.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Trent, I kind of don’t get you. I mean I totally respect your opinion but Camera Diaz is pretty talented. If you’ve seen her in “My Sister’s Keeper” you will know that. She’s come along way and she will eventually win an award… there’s A LOT of people who are more talented than Cameron and they don’t win Oscars or any other prestigious awards. I could make a list but I don’t feel like doing so… even though Cameron doesn’t win any awards just because she’s not a super talented actress can be compared to people who are “super talented” and they don’t win awards, either. A little irrelevant. If Kristin is so worried about her career taking a backstep then why did she agree to do it? Oh right, she didn’t have a career and just picked something for the $$$ and to become in the limelight. She may get roles but I doubt they’ll be anything to be proud about. If she tried to make a career after Laguna Beach and failed and is repeating the same steps with The Hills then chances are pretty high that history is going to repeat itself. : )
July 14th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
@Chase — I don’t mean to say that KC will become Cameron overnight, but Cam did appear in a lot of small, crappy movies in her early career. If KC follows her path, she could achieve the same success.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
@ Chase! Exactly my friend :)
July 14th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
What a smug talentless byotch. The next Cameron Diaz? Sienna Miller? In her dreams. She is an ultimate famewhore, we don’t see Cameron staging her own publicity or calling the paps when she’s going to dinner or shopping. The Hills will be a fail with her and the reason LC was successful is because she was a hard worker, attended college (even if she didn’t complete her degree) and practices humility.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
LOL! I was trying to think of something clever to say… but everybody else said it SO WELL…. talentless beyotch with an attitude… maybe she shouls try porn.
Oh.. and I hate that you <3 her too, Trent! :-(
July 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
I have to agree with everyone here. I hate that you love her. Haha. It’s the truth Trent, I really don’t get it. She just does not seem like a nice person. Why such seemingly ungrateful, shallow and self-entitled behavior is rewarded by loyalty and adoration is beyond me…
July 14th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
@ It’s Trent, Bitch! I never said she won, I said she was nominated for several awards. Or an award contender as you said in your article. Lol at KC ever hoping to achive at least a fraction of her success.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
this bitch NEEDS to go to college, she is a total IDIOT, and it completely shows in this interview. I wouldn’t quit the day job if I were her.
July 14th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
“I said, “Hi, I’m Kristin Cavallari from Laguna Beach””
Who says that? This chick has an over-sized head that almost rivals Speidi. Actual actors and actresses-ones with talent have gone to college while they had their career. You are not special because you were the bitch on Laguna Beach and you didn’t drop college plans because you were too famous. You just want easy money and fame with the least amount of work possible. The Hills is obviously not the place to showcase you acting range, so don’t diss the only people who are willing to give you a job just because you think you are too good to take your lumps like other REAL actors.
Your “career” is being a celebrity. You are famous for being famous. She is the new Speidi in training, UGH.
July 14th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
By other shows she means the trashy reality group house shows on VH1.
And by other movies she mean drunk girl #3…Oh I mean drunk girl #1. I forgot. She’s famous.
July 14th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
No offense, Trent, but there is no way this girl will make it anywhere near Cameron Diaz’s stratosphere with her crappy attitude. Cameron is a sweetheart, Kristen is a spoiled little rich girl with a false sense of entitlement.
No one would know who the hell she is without MTV and now she’s saying publicly that she’s essentially too good for them, but is doing the show anyway? Who goes anywhere with that kind of attitude and is taken seriously?
July 14th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
No one from reality shows-especially MTV and VH1 reality shows are actually taken seriously.
July 14th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Jeez girl, what career? Your 15 minutes was up long ago, stop trying to extend it!
July 14th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
@Ben — no offense taken and I do agree. my point was she could go the same career route if she really tried but she prolly doesn’t have the work ethic to truly pull it off.
July 14th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Wow. I wish she didn’t make that “I read a lot of books” comment.
July 14th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Look, I must be about one of the only people in the western work who DOESN’T watch “The Hills”, “Laguna Beach” or any other such related show. I’m sure if I did, I might get into the vapid bitchiness of it all as I have a tendancy for such things, BUT the fact remains that I DON’T watch it, I don’t WANT to watch it, and it PAINS me how much I know about all these stupid peopel, LC, Speidi, Kristin, et al….it really pains me.
I mean seriously, who CARES about these people?? Kristin’s never going to be “the next Cameron” I’m sorry, and we all need to give up watching these people! They all glorify everything that is wrong with the world today.
Next please.
July 14th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I saw My Sisters Keeper and Cameron was AWESOME in it. She is actually talented. Kristin is insane to think she will ever have a career like Cameron. No f’in way. But I still love to watch her on reality tv but I think it’s going to be all straight-to-dvd movies for K-Cav.
July 14th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Now, I hate this tramp as much as the rest of you, but in her defense, I think that, when introducing herself to the college classroom, she meant “my name is Kristin Cavallari, and I come from the town Laguna Beach, located in California,” NOT “I’m Kristin Cavallari from that crappy show on MTV.” I know I had to do the same thing when I was in college (and oddly, we have the same name…right down to the same spelling…it’s I-n, people, not e-n). I never once stated my name and location in a conceited manner (maybe because no one was aware of the small town from which I hailed). Now, being a typical SoCal attention whore, she may have meant it an an arrogant manner, but I’m just sayin’…
July 14th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Please she is gross. She came out of laguna thinking she was a star, hired stylist, agent and attended every event that takes d-listers. Soon because she has no talent and no willing to work hard, she fell off the radar. She then saw the success of LC and now she’s coming to the hills. I wont be watching to make her head even bigger than it is.
July 15th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Every time anyone mentions LA Candy and Lauren Conrad being at the top of the best sellers list like she is some sort of literary genius and didn’t have a ghost writer to write that book(badly), I want to throw up everywhere.
July 15th, 2009 at 8:03 am
The first movie Cameron Diaz starred in was ‘The Mask’, and that was a big succes. Pretty nice for a debut. Something KC can now never achieve.
July 15th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Trent, I have to be honest. I have no idea why you like her. Yeah, she’s pretty and has a great body, but her looks are a dime a dozen.
Yeah maybe spending everyday with an acting coach she might even be able to eek out a semi-believable performance, but who is going to really take any role she may get thrown seriously. “Hey isn’t that the b*tch hot girl from Laguna Beach/The Hills.
I feel like reality stars who get their faces and images out their by “being famous,” i.e-courting the paps, showing up randomly to premiere’s that they were not invited to, basically doing the Speidi thing, will not ever reach Cameron Diaz standards. I don’t think they will ever be in a film that they are taken seriously in. I just think people who want to make films with some sort of integrity are not going to want to hire someone like her. And people who don’t want there film to be a joke won’t hire her as well. She isn’t the first reality star to try for an acting career.
No one has hit the big time yet and I doubt they ever will, but Kristen seems to think she’s special, because she finally got the lead girl part in a “legit” straight to DVD film that it seems like she had to beg for.
So could she be a Cameron? Sure. Could Heidi Pratt become a pop star? It’s possible. We can all reach our goals if we are willing to work hard enough. I’m just saying Kristen doesn’t seem to be willing to do the work-the right kind-at least for the career she seems to want.

Deep down, I’m trying to believe that she said all those things in the interview because she is in fact a PR genius trying to cement her image as the ‘villain’ of the show to generate more press and that she didn’t mean any of the things she said. But I find it much easier to believe that these words represent her true colors and that she’s just the vapid, arrogant, empty, vain, self-entitled beyotch we all know she is. She’ll never make it big in Hollywood, I can bet my life on it.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
P.S. Being hot isn’t enough in Hollywood, you have to have character. She’s a dime a dozen.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I seem to always agree with CHASE. The “I read a lot of books” comment…wow.
July 15th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
I agree with Chase and Ben. Her attitude will get her no where. If she came up to me with that attitude, I’ll slap her back into Laguna. She has such a negative vibe and shit, and it ain’t cool. LC had a VERY wholesome attitude and she was sweet, whilst Miss Kristin Bitchyllari, she wants to get hit. She craves that attention, and not a good one :/
July 19th, 2009 at 5:28 am
PW: Did you always want to be an actress?
Kristin: I always wanted to, but I just never thought it was a realistic goal. – Well she was right on that one…. mwhahahah…. All those reality ‘celebs’ are so over rated… (sorry Trent)
