First Look: Drake, ‘Best I Ever Had’

First single from his debut album 'Thank Me Later'
July 2nd, 2009

New R&B artist Drake (née Aubrey Graham) has released his debut music video for his debut single Best I Ever Had. The video was directed by Kanye West and is the lead single from Drake’s as yet unreleased debut album Thank Me Later. Here are a few screencaps from the just released music video:

As you may recall, Drake has been romantically linked with Rihanna and has been taken under the wings of both Kanye West (who directed his video), Jay-Z (who is rumored to have offered Drake a very lucrative record deal) and Lil’ Wayne (who has been mentoring his career thus far). It really sounds like Drake has got a lot of powerhouses in his corner … he’s bound to succeed, right? After the jump, check out Drake’s video for Best I Ever Had in full …

The song ain’t bad but I don’t totally love it. I’m more of an upbeat music type of person … but I am intrigued to hear more. As I said, with big guns like Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z and Kanye standing behind you, chances are you’re gonna churn out some pretty hot music. I’ll have to hear more to make that determination for me. What do y’all think … do you like this video? Or is all the Drake hype much ado about nothing?

  1. Tracy Says:

That video is meh. But I loved him on Degrassi! lol.

  2. M_Deezy Says:

the video could be better.. but i do love his music from what i’ve heard so far… and also to will always love him as jimmy from degrassi lol

  3. Paul From Toronto Says:

Ya Degrassi.. Love that show.. He was great on it.. Good For Him making it big..

  4. adam Says:

i cant focus past all the girls HUGE boobies jiggling

  5. Kate Says:

And yet, he’s still just Jimmy. Okay, so he’s better than the Zit Remedy, but the high school theme makes it impossible to disconnect “Drake” from “Degrassi.” I kept wondering how many of those “athletes” Spinner was hitting on, and the mascot made me mourn JT.

  6. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

    @adam — I believe that is the point ;)

  7. Malcolm McCrae Says:

This must be a new trend!?

Mess up an awesome song with a video that makes no sense and is boring. lol
Cant wait for his album though! Oh and i heard he signed with Lil Wayne’s record company…its lil wayne who actually helped him get this far and jump started his career.

  8. Maria Says:

He is so overated. And he is so fugly!

  9. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Malcolm McCrae — Lil’ Wayne, really? I know there’s been a lot of talk about who he’s gonna sign with … but that’d be cool. I know Jay loves Drake tho, he’s got some heavy-hitters helping him launch his career.

  10. nicole Says:

Shit song..Shit video. he’s gotta be the most over rated for 09. he’s gunna be just as annoying & over played like wayne, no wonder wayne signed him.

  11. EmCee Says:

I don’t get the whole name thing…I mean it’s one thing to come out with the name, but he was on Degrassi for…FOREVER as Aubrey Graham. And then he’s just like “hm…I’m going to do music and change my name. cool.” I just can’t get used to it.
I also never liked him on Degrassi so maybe I’m just bound to hate…lol

  12. Malcolm McCrae Says:

@ It’s Trent Bitch! Yeah i know, it must feel good to have so many big name rappers after you. but lil wayne was with him from the beginning. A bunch of his underground stuff features wayne of hes mentioned. his wiki page confirms it! i know its wiki but its true. lol

  13. KP Love Says:

Although I love this song, this vid is kinda lame. Maybe he’s trying to appeal to the male audience(?).

  14. sommerface Says:

    Jimmy can walk!!!

  15. Jackie Says:

I’m going to watch the video later, but I just wanted to say how good his album is. He’s got some sick rhymes, and I know he will be the one to watch for. Weezy’s on a lot of his tracks, too — I don’t think he got signed to Young Money yet, but he will definitely get signed soon. I think it’s just a matter of choosing whom, for him.

  16. kikit Says:

This has been my favorite song for over the last month, they have been playing here in Toronto for a while now!!!

  17. MuDarling Says:

I don’t get how he doesn’t have a album out already. He’s got like 4 video’s out so far. I get that this is suppose to be the first single but shouldn’t u have already done a video for this single already…I mean really. I like the songs so far but the video’s just haven’t lived up. Sorry “Jimmy”, try again!

  18. Irma Says:

This is so weird that you posted this because I JUST found out who he was yesterday. And he’ll never be “Drake” to be, he’ll always be Jimmy in a wheelchair.

  19. Adri Says:

@kikit i’m with you…i’ve been digging this song for a minute

  20. Kit Says:

I can’t take him seriously because hes been Jimmy for so long.

  21. Matt Says:

Wasn’t he on Degrassi: the next generation. The student who was the basketball player and then ended up in a wheel chair.

  22. Ana S. Says:

He’ll always be Jimmy to me. He was great on Degrassi.

  23. hazel Says:

    he’s ugly

  24. Kyleigh Says:

That is one of the stupidest effing videos I have ever seen! Kanye should not be proud of this piece of garbage! “Drake” was more believable as Jimmy Brooks than he is as a rapper!

  25. Alex Says:

Eh it’s an alright song. He’s not ugly though, pretty cute I think.

  26. Chivonne Says:

Every time I see him I think ‘ WHERE IS YOUR WHEELCHAIR?’ It’s hard to get used to !

  27. F Says:

    @sommerface HAHAHAHA love it!

    crap song..boring!

  28. Apples v 2 Says:

@sommerface: lmao lmao lmao HAHAHAHAHA :)

  29. Isabelle Says:

LOVE the song. The video is meh. It’s supposed to be a sweet rap song but it’s just a bunch of boobs. Lame.

  30. Faith Says:

I’m really not the RnB type, and I didn’t think I would ever be able to take him seriously musically, because I love him so much in Degrassi…but I actually like this song……..a lot.

  31. Steph Says:

    @EmCee

He didn’t change his name. His middle name is Drake, so his full name is Aubrey Drake Graham. But yeah, I used to watch him on Degrassi all the time when I was little and met him when he was touring with Degrassi. He’s pretty nice!

  32. tatiana Says:

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, FEAST YOUR EARS AND EYES ON MY FAVORITE SONG that is CURRENTLY being played on the radio right now. This song is really good. His lyrics are creative, and make you think, throw a dash of hood into the mix and you have Drake. Honestly, Im tired of hearing the same crap on the radio, and this song is a breathe of fresh air. Im also feeling that Kid Cudi song.

  33. Carolina Says:

why would he do a highschool video, everyone in canada cant separate him from jimmy on degrassi lol.. soo i think he should stay away from this theme. especially a basketball thing of all sports lol

  34. Kim Says:

    @sommerface hahahahahaha

I was watching the re-run where Jimmy and Ashley sing/rap…that was better imho lol

  35. yvr_chickie Says:

hmm I would have thought Kanye could come up with something slightly more original – these girls are probably the same ones from his Workout song.

Good luck to Drake though, looks like he’s going to make it way further than Degrassi.

LOL @ Kim – I saw that ep. too!

  36. Shawna Says:

@ EmCe drake is his middle name. lol

  37. Alex Says:

I’ve heard this song before. I didnt know it was Jimmy, lol. I dont think degrassi fans can stop seeing him as Jimmy Brooks.

  38. That Girl Says:

The end dialogue is kinda funny…but I don’t get the whole video concept. Doesn’t seem to jive with the song. The whole coach/young scantily clad female student athlete thing creeps me out. “Drake” doesn’t even look old enough to be a coach. He looks like he’s still enrolled at Degrassi.

In any case, what’s the point of videos anymore? VH1 is the only network that seems to play them.
