David Beckham Returns ‘Home’ To The LA Galaxy
Doesn't receive a very warm welcome from some diehard fans

Altho David Beckham played his first game with his US team the LA Galaxy last week on the East Coast, last night was his first home game with the Galaxy since he defected for the first half of the MLS Soccer season to play with his newer team AC Milan. Ironically enough, the Galaxy faced Milan in a friendly match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA last night … which essentially pit Becks‘s teams against one another. A sizable contingency of vocal and very loyal LA Galaxy fans took the opportunity yesterday to let David Beckham know exactly what they think of him … and it wasn’t very pretty:

As homecomings go, David Beckham’s return to Carson on Sunday to join the Galaxy for an exhibition game against AC Milan was the exact opposite of the Manny Ramirez lovefest that broke out at Dodger Stadium last week. It started out nasty and took a turn toward ugly as the teams left the field at halftime of what would become a 2-2 tie against the team Beckham played for last season and hopes to play for again next season. Incensed at remarks hurled at him by fans sitting in a corner of the Home Depot Center, Beckham approached them to urge them to calm down. One hurdled the barrier separating the stands from the end zone and was escorted away by security officers. “One of them jumps over to shake my hand,” he said, “but maybe not.” Definitely not. “They were saying things that really weren’t very nice,” Beckham said. “There’s always going to be a certain reaction. The majority of fans here wanted to watch the game and the great players and I think they enjoyed themselves.” Beckham got some payback in the 64th minute, when he took a corner kick in front of his most virulent critics in the so-called “Riot Squad” and watched as teammate Bryan Jordan headed the ball home. He turned to the fans to share his glee, even if they wanted no part of it. “I’m not disappointed because it doesn’t affect me,” he said of the boos. “At the end of the day you can’t be liked by everybody.” Beckham was taken out in the 75th minute after a strong performance. He finally tipped the jeers/cheers meter in his favor, but he will be a polarizing figure as long as he’s here, an obligation that lasts at least through the MLS season. This was supposed to be a friendly game, but the fans’ venom toward Beckham became the overriding story. Landon Donovan, restored to the captaincy he was forced to relinquish to Beckham in 2007, said he expected the story to change. “If he keeps playing like that, I’m sure people are going to be behind him,” Donovan said. And maybe not entirely. Not to justify the actions of morons who cross the line to insulting players’ families and other obscenities, it’s clear you can’t fool the soccer faithful. Fans here know Beckham was so intent on not coming back to the Galaxy that he reportedly paid $3 million to ensure his loan to AC Milan was extended four months past his original March 9 MLS return. Many Galaxy fans see the multi-tattooed Englishman as an over-the-hill, overpaid superstar who condescends to play once in a while, when he’s not counting the royalties on his jersey sales. They’re not entirely wrong, though injuries limited him to five games in 2007. On Sunday, they let him know how they felt in no uncertain terms.

I have to say, I’m pretty sure Becks has endured worse from rabid soccer fans in Europe … but in all honesty, what did he expect? Yes, there are some fans who will support and cheer for him no matter what he does but you cannot really fault the other fans who feel he betrayed them and, in all honesty, has done very little to actually help the team win games. To give another perspective, since I was in attendance at last night’s game, there was another contingency of LA Galaxy fans called the Angel City Brigade who were cheering for Becks and the Galaxy. On the side of the stadium where I was, there were NO boos at all for Becks thruout the entire game. After the jump, check out some pics of Becks in action during last night’s game along with some deets about the game itself

[A]mid the jeers, Beckham played a role in both Galaxy goals. After Thiago Silva gave Milan a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, the Galaxy equalized in the 30th through Alan Gordon, set up by Landon Donovan after a cross from Beckham. Milan went ahead again in the 61st, when Filippo Inzaghi timed a run perfectly into the area to score. The Galaxy responded again, earning a corner kick in the 65th minute. Beckham, who stayed in the match amid a string of Galaxy halftime substitutions, walked deliberately over to take the corner kick, near the fan section that had given him the most grief. His sent a precise kick into the area and Bryan Jordan headed it in to knot the score at 2-2, after which Beckham turned and faced his critics. Beckham left the game in the 75th minute, waving to a group of supportive fans en route to the bench. “The cheers in the end drowned out the boos, which was nice,” Beckham said. After spending an impressive second half of last season with AC Milan, Beckham returned to the Galaxy in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, his first match since the end of the Serie A campaign.

While I, too, am still miffed at the way that Becks appears to be treating his Galaxy team, I have to admit that he played well last night and did contribute to both Galaxy goals. For me, it’s easier to love him rather than hate him … that doesn’t mean I won’t be critical but, in the end, I’m still a fan. Becks did have some genuine fans in the hiz last night … here are a few pics of wife Victoria Beckham (looking a lot less shiny), his son Romeo Beckham (taking a page from daddy’s style book) and BFF Tom Cruise watching the game from their luxury box seats:

All in all … it was a great game. When teams tie, everyone wins … even the pissy Galaxy fans have to be happy that their team held their own against one of the greatest fútbol clubs in the world. Will the fans ever warm up to Becks again? I guess it depends on how he treats them from here on out … we’ll just have to wait and see.

UPDATE: Here is video of Becks‘s confrontation with that angry fan:

HMMMM. It looks like Becks has got a lot of work ahead of him if he truly wants to make friends again with the staunchly diehard LA Galaxy fanbase.

That is crazy!! Damn, burn us once and we don’t forget even thou I think those looks make up for any “miscommunication” that was made during his time in Italy. Also, didn’t he just help us score a victory??

  2. Tammi says:

Entertaining game last night. This l.a. team under Arena are much better than the teams of the last 2 years.

The fans that are still upset have a right to boo him and Beckham just has to deal with that. One the other hand, those same fans have to deal with Beckham’s right to choose to go on loan to help his chances with England. Country over club.

  3. Kendra says:

I’m sure Beckham cried into his millions last night after the game with the booing fans.. ;) Eff ‘em! Whether you agree with what he did or not, he brought such a crazy level of excitement to the game when he decided to sign on with the Galaxy..It was nice to see a sport that my family has been playing/following for so many years finally get some recognition! I don’t fault the guy for wanting to play for AC Milan, but now that he’s back, I can’t wait to see him focus on the Galaxy!

  4. Penny says:

The galaxy fans should also be miffed at the owners. Beckham made it clear that he didn’t want to come back but the Galaxy wouldn’t let him go because he’s their cash cow.

Trent you forgot to mention that the match had the highest ever attendance for a galaxy match. I wonder why? You and the other miffed fans can rightly keep on being miffed, just also face reality that the chance of just being included on a World Cup team (and not even as a starter) trumps remaining with the galaxy to try to win the mls cup.

Trades like Beckhams are normal in soccer. Just not in american soccer. People need to calm down. He has done a lot to bring attention to soccer in the US since he came here.

    • @Anne — He wasn’t traded, he decided to abandon his multi-million dollar contract with the Galaxy to play for Milan. If he had been traded, there would be no issue … he defected, therein lies the anger.

i cant help but laugh – i love sports fans (me being one) – such a unforgiving bunch lol

  7. nicole says:

and by happen i mean..was he really going after a fan for booing him…or was it something else?

  8. *STAR* says:

the LA times and bbc have reported that the la riot squad section of the crowd started to chant stuff about his wife and children and thats why he confronted these “fans” at half-time. if that is the case in no way what so ever is it acceptable, and he shouldn’t expect that kind of abuse at all.

  9. *STAR* says:

i live in europe i know exactly what has been said about him in europe “i hope your kids die of cancer” being one of the worst chants after the 1998 world cup incident. just because he’s “had far worse before” doesn’t excuse the fact a bunch of grown men were chanting about a players wife and children! he had every right to react like he did.

  10. Maggie says:

Well, he obviously only chose to come to LA because of all the money they paid him. I never thought for a moment that he came here because he truly wanted to live here or because he loved the Galaxy and wanted to be a member. Please, lol. Clearly, he wants it all; the money he gets from the Galaxy and the glory of playing with a world cup team like Milan. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too, David. But I still think you’re hot ;)

  11. Erin says:

It’s not about the money. He doesn’t make that much money from the galaxy, most of his money comes from his own endorsements and cut of his shirt sales. The Galaxy execs said themselves that they have already made back the money they paid him.
I understand the fans being upset because his loyalty clearly lies with England not with their team. Everyone who watched the move saw that it was clearly a commercial move, not really about the team(he’s meant to bring attention and sell shirts, which he’s done). Both sides have the right to do and feel how they want.

  12. nisha says:

i think some people need to calm down first of all david has dealt with worse before when he was sent off during the 1998 world cup and at that point he was the most hated man in england and blamed for england losing the world cup which was so unfair.they threatned to kill him and his family but after a while the fans came round as he just played so well.first i was angry at what david did to the galaxy but after thinking about it,watching interviews, taking in the facts etc it wasn’t as much of a betrayal as the media and people made it out to be and what david said about any other player taking the same oppurtunity would have been true.you also have to respect the fact that he has a right to want to make the most out of his career and alot of people in football suppported him.all the time david did mention that he wanted to help with american soccer and david’s not the kind of person to betray people.about the halftime those fans must have said something pretty bad probably about his family because its only on few occassions david reacts to fans in this way like once when david used to play for manchester united he stuck his middle finger up at some fans who made up abusive chants and called victoria a whore and said they hoped brooklyn would get cancer which is the such a horrible thing to say and is going too personal.atleast that time he had the support of mangers, coach etc with him but its good to know he has his family and friends their to support him as always.stay strond david an amazing player no matter what.thanks for posting

  13. *STAR* says:

so if someone was saying the same about your partner and children you would just shrug it off would you….i very much doubt it. the galaxy fans over stepped the mark. fine boo him, insult him, but dont bring his family into it.

  14. Erin says:

Trent Alexi Lalas said they more than made up for the deal from the commercial side alone, It was on ESPN’s PTI (from the new endorsements and merchandise). And the loan money will more than pay his wages (look up the MLS commissioner’s comments after the loan was extended). His salary is just 5 million a year.

  15. rosso says:

Still vaguely annoyed he didn’t sign for the Rossoneri permanently but hopefully he’ll be back after this MLS season has finished.

Surprised you didn’t notice little Cruz’s cool mohawk thing going on, he was there too & has gone for an awesome haircut for like a 3 year old or however old he is!

  16. rosso says:

Oh and I’ll also say as an ardent football fan in Europe, yep he’ll have heard A LOT worse through his career (thinking back to the year after the World Cup in 98 was probably the worst for him personally…but also many times I’ve been in football crowds & heard people chanting about hoping his kids get cancer & awful stuff like that…it’s sad but part of the game & I’m sure he’s used to it by now)

  17. Marketa says:

    god americans are such morons.

  18. Marketa says:

us soccer is a joke, if i were him i wouldnt want to play for the galaxy either, i would take all the time in europe i could get.
