People magazine posted a story earlier this week where they spoke with the costume designers who created the outfits for Michael Jackson‘s planned This Is It Tour which was scheduled to kick off at the O2 Arena in London, England for a 50-date stint starting on July 13. The designers offered personal insights and secrets about the tour as well as a first look at sketches of some of the costumes … really fascinating stuff, I think:

As Michael Jackson prepared for his final This Is It tour, friends on set say the pop star was never better. “He’s still a terrific dancer,” says costume designer Dennis Tompkins, who worked with Michael Bush to create an “over the top” wardrobe for the tour. On his final night of rehearsal, Jackson “was doing the moonwalk. Everything!” says Bush. “He did the whole show full out at performance level. He was like, ‘When are we going to London? Let’s go. I’m ready.’” He was also on a creative high. “Working with Michael for 25 years we had never seen his creativity at this level,” says Bush. “It was like where is this coming from? I get goose bumps thinking about what this visual was going to look like.” Though the show won’t go on, Bush and Tompkins gave PEOPLE an exclusive look at just that. Here’s an inside look at what you might have seen.

A THRILLING JACKET: Costumers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins re-created Jackson’s iconic looks for each of the 26 songs he was to perform, but the singer asked, “How can we take it to the next level?” Bush recalls. The solution? Fiber-optic lights sewn onto his red leather “Thriller” jacket, for a surprise light show timed to the music.

OLD FAVES: Jackson was going to back his signature crystal glove and socks, which caught the light — and assured that even fans in the back could see him dance. “He was so excited to perform,”says Bush.

A MILITARY SALUTE: For the star’s rendition of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” Bush and Tompkins created a “regimented, military” look.

BELTS AND WHISTLES: Tompkins had to make sure items like this jeweled belt would fit Jackson’s slight 27 3/4 inch waist, but says his weight was not an issue: “He was a bit smaller, but he was always thin.”

MAJOR DANCE MOVES: Jackson’s new Billie Jean suit held 7.5 lbs. of Swarovski crystals and 60 lights, so the star made sure he could do a spin before signing off. “The dance came first; costumes were secondary,” says Bush. “And his moves were sharper than ever.”

Man … it is so sad to hear just how much of the classic Michael Jackson was going to be on display if he had lived long enough to successfully pull off his This Is It Tour. David and I had been talking off and on about what sort of show we might’ve seen on September 10 (the date that we were planning on seeing the show) and now, to hear about what could’ve been … it just adds to the tragic feeling of loss. On Thursday we learned the somewhat surprising news that eldest Jonas brother Kevin got engaged to his girlfriend Danielle Deleasa and today we learn that the happy couple celebrated their engagement with Kevin‘s brothers and bandmates at a special dinner in NYC last night. I mean, what better way to celebrate ones upcoming nuptials than with a pizza party! I mean … it’s not like they chose to celebrate at Chuck E. Cheese or anything … it was, like, a serious grown-up place and everything. I understand that Danielle and the JoBros partied with 30 of their closest friends. Sounds like fun, don’t it?

Yesterday afternoon, David and I made our way out to the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood, CA to see the new Johnny Deep/Christian Bale period gangster movie Public Enemies … a movie I have been looking forward to seeing for months now. In short, I loved it thoroughly … while David was pretty lukewarm about it:

But, around these here parts, it’s my review that matters ;) In all honesty, I hate period piece movies. I rarely find that they are believable enough to keep my attention and interesting enough to entertain. Neither was the case for Public Enemies. The careful recreation of Depression-era Chicago was well done and the story was wholly fascinating. I admit, I did not know much about the life of John Dillinger other than he was a “rock star” bank robber who garnered fame from his slick ways and his good looks. Johnny Depp really brought the man to life for me and gave a great performance. I was also very impressed by his fellow gangsters played by Stephen Dorf (as Homer Van Meter), David Wenham (as Harry Pete Pierpont) and Jason Clarke (as John Red Hamilton). They were Dillinger‘s boys … and they did a great job. It seems that Christian Bale is incapable of playing a character where he doesn’t do funny things with his voice but he was pretty good in this movie. His performance in Public Enemies is much better than the one he turned in for Terminator: Salvation. Marion Cotillard (as Dillinger‘s girlfriend Billie Frechette) and Billy Crudup (as J. Edgar Hoover) also gave very strong performances. I was bummed that Channing Tatum‘s appearance in the film as Pretty Boy Floyd was nothing more than a cameo. He still looked hot tho :) I loved this film a lot … I found it wholly interesting and entertaining. If it had one flaw, I’d say it feels like a long movie. Even still, I give it two thumbs up.

The rest of the night was spent at home, together. David and I had a great, quiet night at home. We’ve been invited to a couple of parties this weekend but, honestly, I dunno that we’re gonna make it out. It’s just too fun being lazy, I’m afraid. Happy 4th of July, y’all! Earlier today Madonna and her newest children Chifundo Mercy James and David Banda made their way, en mass, to the Kabbalah Centre in London, England for a little religiousity to get the day started out right. As you may recall, Madonna kicks off a new leg of her Sticky & Sweet Tour at the O2 Arena in London tonight so it appears that she wanted to get in a bit of churchin’ beforehand … here are a few photos:

As you can see, little Mercy and David got all dolled up for the occasion … Madonna just wore whatever work-out clothes (hopefully clean) that she had handy. Nonetheless, despite Maddy‘s dressed-downness they all look super-adorable together … I’m so happy for Maddy‘s newly expanded family.

Ryan Phillippe was spotted making his way out of the gym here in LA earlier this week and homie was lookin’ pretty damn good, if I say so myself. Some guys just have the ability to make a plain white tank top t-shirt look really, really good … behold:

Infomercial king and pitchman guru Billy Mays was honored at his funeral in McKees Rocks, PA yesterday just 5 days after he passed away in his Tampa, FL home last weekend. As you may recall, the autopsy report stated that Mays passed away due to an ailment of heart disease … he was 50 years old. Here are a few photos of Mays‘s pallbearers all wearing blue OxiClean shirts in his honor at the memorial service yesterday:

References to television pitchman Bill Mays’ trademark image were everywhere at his funeral Friday near Pittsburgh. Most mourners wore stickers showing a cartoon image of his distinctive bearded face. The six pallbearers eschewed suits and instead wore bright blue button-down shirts like the ones Mays wore on TV. At the conclusion of the ceremony, they gave a “thumbs up,” just as Mays did at the end of one of his commercials. Mays, whose high-energy hawking turned products like OxiClean from infomercial curiosities into mainstream successes, was remembered as a pop culture icon who never forgot his hometown or spiritual roots. “He sold more OxiClean than Andy Warhol sold Campbell’s Soup,” cousin Dean Panizzi said in eulogizing Mays and comparing him to the Pittsburgh-born pop artist who turned soup cans into works of art. Panizzi’s 20-minute eulogy evoked everything from memories of their childhood together — complete with a Christmas Eve remembrance of their parents ringing sleigh bells outside — to Mays’ devout Christian faith. Panizzi recited various lines Mays made famous, including “Life’s a pitch, and then you buy” and drew a standing ovation parroting Mays’ signature introduction, “Hi, Billy Mays here.” Hundreds of mourners packed the black brick, gothic Catholic church in the suburb of McKees Rocks, where Mays was raised, to remember the popular pitchman … Outside the funeral, a company owned by fellow “Pitchmen” star Anthony Sullivan handed out the shiny stickers bearing a caricature of Mays’ face. Mays hawked everything from the Wash-matik, a device for pumping water from a bucket to wash cars, to Orange Glo, an environmentally friendly cleaner. Sporting a jet-black beard and coupling high-energy demonstrations with booming pitches, Mays always seemed ready to jump off the screen … Mays is believed to have died of a heart attack in his sleep June 28 at his home in Tampa, Fla., but further tests are needed to be sure of the cause of death.

It’s so sad that death has so dominated the world of pop culture in the last weeks … it’s a damn shame that the world itself has lost so many greats. Billy Mays is a testament of the American Dream … if you work hard and pay your dues, you can achieve any goal … any dream. It’s strange to say that I was a fan of an infomercial pitchman but … you know what, I was a fan. I admired Mays‘s can do attitude and even admit that he talked me into purchasing some of his products. The man was a retail genius. He set a new benchmark for the entrepreneurial spirit. He will be missed. Again, my thoughts and prayers goes out to his entire family. May they heal quickly and may Billy Mays rest in eternal peace.

When last we saw Sarah Michelle Gellar out and about showing off her burgeoning baby bump it was clear that her stomach was starting but show but it wasn’t no big thang … but that was over a month ago. SMG was spied here on the streets of SoCal yesterday and, man, her bump has gotten BIG … behold:

I understand that SMG was on her way to a pilates class in Encino, CA … and Holy Moly has she gotten big :) I just LOVE seeing her all pregs and shizz. This first baby with hubby Freddie Prinze, Jr. is long overdue IMHO. I am so happy for the both of them … and I cannot wait until the fruit of their loins is borne into the world. You look amazing, SMG! Woot!

In just a few hours, Madonna will kick off the newest leg of her Sticky & Sweet World Tour at the O2 Arena in London, England which, as many of you already know, was going to be the site of the late Michael Jackson‘s 50 date performance of his This Is It Tour in just a couple of weeks. In honor of her late compatriot, Maddy will be paying homage to MJ in her show as she has added a special song and dance number in his honor during tonight’s performance. Madonna.com has been updated with a photo from rehearsals giving a sneak preview of this added tribute to Michael Jackson:

I understand that Madonna will not be able to attend MJ‘s public memorial service at the Staples Center here in LA on Tuesday July 7 so I think it’s really very cool of her to pay tribute to her longtime friend in this way. It’s not exactly known when exactly Madonna and Michael Jackson met and became friends but they did run into one another in the early 80′s after MJ was already a well known star and Madge was an up and comer. These two go back a long way. Again, it’s very fitting that Madonna has decided to add this tribute to her late friend in her concert performance. And speaking of … while Maddy will be performing LIVE on stage at the O2 Arena in London in just a few hours, folks in the UK (who won’t be at her concert tonight) will be able to watch her FULL Sticky & Sweet Tour performance from Buenos Aires, Argentina on television at the same time:
