In a surprising turn of events, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin announced today that she will be resigning her office as governor in about two weeks. No reason was given as to why Palin is resigning but I think it is safe to assume that she’s got her next career move all planned out. So now, in addition to being a loser in the 2008 Vice Presidential election, she is now a quitter as well. To be honest, this sounds like the best news EVER for the great State of Alaska:

Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her Wasilla home Friday morning. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor’s Picnic at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks the weekend of July 25, Palin said. There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Palin made the announcement flanked by Parnell and most, if not all, of her cabinet. Parnell ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Don Young in the Republican primary last year. The stunning announcement by Palin opens the floodgates for the 2010 gubernatorial race. Speculation that Palin might not seek re-election had fueled further conjecture of who might run.

I think it’s no surprise that this news makes me exceedingly happy … I say, good riddance. But, I’m not really counting on never having to hear from Sarah Palin ever again. She’ll prolly end up on Fox News or some equally evil place spewing her You Betcha nonsense for many years to come. But, as I said, at least the beautiful State of Alaska doesn’t have to deal with being saddled with her any longer. Happy Independence Day, Alaska! You really deserve this :)

Britney Spears, who is currently making her way to Paris, France in order to perform in concert there tomorrow night, spent part of her yesterday hanging out in Calabasas, CA yesterday putzing around all by her lonesome. Interestingly enough, Brit Brit was not wearing that snazzy new ring that she’s been showing off lately … do you suppose it means something that she’s no longer wearing her new ring?

My guess is that cheap piece of tin that she was wearing (mostly likely to get people talking about “her new ring”) ended up turning her finger green so she had to get rid of it. Whatever the case may be … ring or no ring, I’m still convinced that she and agent Jason Trawick are romantically involved. I hope all the Frenchies are ready for Britney‘s arrival. Her Circus is on the way … and I just know, y’all ain’t ready.

A spokesman for the Jackson family along with city officials and representatives from AEG Live held a press conference today in downtown LA at just about 10:30AM PT to formally announce the plans for Michael Jackson‘s public memorial service at the Staples Center on Tuesday July 7. It was announced that approximately 17,000 tickets will be made available to fans FREE of charge and ONLY ticket holders would be allowed anywhere near the Staples Center area on that day. Interested folks will have to enter their information at THIS site before 6PM PT tomorrow evening to be entered into the random drawing for tickets. Folks who are selected for tickets will be notified via email on Sunday with further information on how to procure those tickets. Here are the full deets about this ticket distribution plan as announced today:

The Michael Jackson Public Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles, California and simulcast inside to Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE across the street. A limited number of free tickets to both venues will be made available for Michael Jackson’s fans to attend. Due to the expected overwhelming demand, the following procedures have been set to accommodate registration for the tickets. Please note that by registering for tickets to attend the Public Memorial Service, it does NOT guarantee the registrant tickets. The opportunity to register for tickets begins at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, July 3, 2009 and ends at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, July 4, 2009. It was made very clear that ALL TICKETS WOULD BE FREE and that the police will be BLOCKING OFF the area during the memorial service in order to control the crowds. If you do not have a ticket, you will NOT be allowed in the area. It was also announced that the entire memorial service would be made available for TV and internet broadcast so that folks around the world could bear witness. No details at all were given on the service itself (ie. what will take place, who will attend, etc.). So … if you’re interested in going, get registered and cross your fingers. I was able to get my registration in but I understand the registration site has been overloaded and has been crashing ever since the announcement was made. Good luck!

Last night was a quiet night in for David and me … so I decided to pop open a nice bottle of Chianti and watch the very trippy Michael Jackson movie Moonwalker (which I hadn’t seen in over 15 years). The movie features some of MJ‘s coolest music videos (namely Smooth Criminal and Leave Me Alone) but also features some of the most insanely ridiculous nonsense I think I have ever seen:

I had forgotten about all the fun stuff in this movie as well as how good Michael Jackson looked at this time in his life. Sure, he had already undergone some plastic surgery but I think his “look” in 1988 was his best and was deffo where he should’ve stopped on the cosmetic surgery train. I really loved seeing the Badder music video in the film, which is an all kids version of his hit music video Bad. Rihanna, a known tattoo enthusiast, was spotted hanging out at East Side Ink tattoo parlor in NYC this week and was even spied doing a bit of tattooing herself. It turns out that Ri Ri got the itch to do some inkin’ so she reportedly tattooed a few East Side Ink employees with little umbrellas. Unfortch for Rihanna and the parlor, what she did was in violation of NY health codes since she is not a licensed tattoo artist and is actually illegal! Whoops!

Rihanna picked up a tattoo needle [Wednesday] night at a parlor in NYC — which would be totally fun and cool, if it wasn’t also incredibly illegal. We’re told RiRi tattooed three of East Side Ink’s artists with umbrellas and the letter R. None of her pet projects cared that she didn’t have a license — but the NYC Law Department does. They say Rihanna could be slapped with three misdemeanors for the offense, each with its own hefty penalty — as much as $300 for the first offense, $500 for the second and $1,000 for the third. Sources say the tattoo shop could also face considerable fines of its own if the NYC Law Dept. decides to open an investigation. The NYC Health Department [tells] TMZ: “Only licensed tattoo artists can administer tattoos in the city according to the City’s Health Code. We are sending someone down to follow up on this.”

Whoopsie! While I’m sure that neither Rihanna nor anyone associated with East Side Ink meant to break any laws, it’s important that strict health codes are adhered to at tattoo parlors. With all of those needles involved in the process, it would be tragic if anything of a communicable nature happened on the premises. To be honest, I doubt anything of note will come of this unintentional violation … but hopefully everyone learned a valuable lesson. Think before you ink, y’all!

Yesterday was Lindsay Lohan‘s 23rd birthday and who did she spend her entire day with? Why, Samantha Ronson, of course. It’s unknown if the ladies are officially back together romantically but they have been spending quite a bit of time together in recent weeks … so at the very least we can assume that they are still very friendly towards one another. Their relationship has taken more twists and turns than most, but it seems Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson’s relationship is back on track. The DJ whisked the Mean Girls actress off for an intimate lunch date at Tra Di Noi in Malibu to celebrate her birthday. Lindsay turned just 23 … She carried on celebrations with a dinner at Cecconi’s restaurant just hours later, where baloons and presents were delivered in her honour. As well as spending the day together, Lindsay and Samatha were also busy exchanging gushing messages on Twitter. The 31-year-old wished her happy birthday on the micro-blogging site followed by a kiss and hug, to which Lindsay replied: ‘Awww thanks baybee lol.’ It comes just weeks after friends declared Samantha was wanting to cut Lindsay out of her life for good. A close source told America’s People magazine: “No matter how many times she promises to change, Lindsay loses control and starts acting like a maniac.” But it seems that Samantha has had a change of heart – for now at least.

Oh yes, the drama appears to be water under the bridge as L. Ron looks like they are back on happy terms again. It’s always very nice when you can celebrate your birthday with the person you love most, right? Samantha wasn’t Lindsay‘s only friend that helped her celebrate her birthday … long time friend Carlos Lopez created a short video for Lindsay‘s birthday — and shares it with the world. Zac Efron was spotted making his way out of La Peer Salon in Beverly Hills, CA yesterday sporting a new hair’do … a shorter hair’do. Zac is widely known for his longish hair and shaggy bangs (bangs that he constantly has to brush out of his eyes with either his fingers or by head flip) but now he’s going for a different look … behold:

I can’t remember the last time that Zac‘s hair was so short … it must be for a new movie role because there ain’t no way that Zac would clip his beautiful hair unless he was forced to by the Powers that Be — or mebbe on the advice of a new lady? Zac was reportedly seen out on a date with Megan Fox earlier this week … perhaps she whispered in his ear and Voila! haircut. I must say … it’s a nice look on him. He looks more clean cut. Not too shabby … do y’all like?

Good Morning America aired some very special, previously unseen home video footage of Michael Jackson in happier times with his young children, Prince Michael Joseph and Paris Michael Katherine in the years between 1999-2003 … at a time when he was still happily married to his second wife Debbie Rowe, was still living at the Neverland Ranch, before the birth of his third child (Prince Michael Joseph, II aka Blanket) and before he was brought up on a second round of charges of child molestation. The home video is painfully sweet and gives us a different look at the man that we believed we knew. Here are a few screencaps from the GMA footage that has been made available:

Those of you who remember this period in MJ‘s life know that he was absolutely private and generally out of public eye for some time. It was ages before we saw him out and about with his children. It was not until he agreed to do the interview with Martin Bashir, Living with Michael Jackson, (after the birth of his third child) that he really opened himself up to the media (and, as you may recall, it was one of the young boys who was featured in that interview that leveled the second round of child molestation charges against him). The Jackson family has finally agreed to plans for a public memorial service at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday July 7. In a statement issued by the family late Thursday, the Jacksons announced that 11,000 tickets would be made available to the public free of charge (which seems contrary to a report from RadarOnline that tickets for the service would cost $25). Here is the newly updated info on Michael Jackson‘s public funeral service as it stands right now:

Michael Jackson’s family has agreed to hold a memorial for the singer at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The decision, announced by family spokesman Ken Sunshine, caps days of discussions about how to honor Jackson. Few details were immediately available. But in a statement, Sunshine said that 11,000 tickets will be distributed to the general public free of charge. There will be a registration system to get tickets. More details will be announced Friday.] At a news conference this afternoon, AEG Live’s chief executive, Randy Phillips, said he had been conferring with the family and that its desire was to hold a memorial service at Staples Center, the scene of the singer’s final rehearsal. Phillips said the ultimate decision about the timing and format of such a program lay with Jackson’s mother, Katherine. “It’s all up to Katherine,” Phillips said.

It is of MUCH comfort to know that there will NOT be a cost to attend Michael Jackson‘s public memorial service after all. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if news of the $25 charge was leaked in order to gauge public sentiment on the matter … clearly, giving away the majority of tickets is the right way to go. It should be noted that the Staples Center holds an estimated 20,000 people so it’s possible that the other 9,000 available tickets could be sold for the reported $25 fee (which would equal $225,000). Whatever the case may be and however the tickets are distributed, I have no doubt that MJ‘s service on Tuesday will be a major spectacle … and I understand it will be only the first of many public memorials to the late King of Pop. While MJ is surely to be buried here in SoCal very soon, the schedule of public memorials around the country and world is sure to continue for some time. It appears that Michael Jackson will get one final world tour, as it were, after all.
