Why on Earth do I need Twitter for?

You say anything can suck if you don’t know how to use it – well, sadly most people are average folks who don’t know how to “use” Twitter – they aren’t celebs, or gossip queens. They are just boring people who update the most mundane activities of their day – I see enough of that on Facebook, why would I want more?

To me, there is nothing more egotistical or self-absorbed than people who say “Follow me on Twitter” – oh, like your lives are so fascinating?

(to be clear, Trent, I can understand why people want to follow you or companies or certain celebs or just – you know – really entertaining people, because if I was on Twitter, that’s what I would be doing. But basically, the people I see on Twitter (read: uninteresting) are, well, Twits…or Twats – believe me, come look on my Facebook.

My updates are locked, and I get to be selective about those who follow me, so if strangers are subjected to my random tweets about my morning beverages or what I’m watching on TV, it’s because they’re likely interested in that stuff too, like an employee for the company that sells the type of tea I drink.

And when pets tweet, I think it’s totally hilarious. @sockington comes to mind there!

I can understand why people ‘don’t get’ Twitter or even go so far to hate it and the people that use it, but to hate it or shy away from it because it is popular or hyped is just so high-school that it’s asinine.

Twitter is what you want it to be. It can be as insignificant as what one has for breakfast, as funny as a tacky one liner, or as informative as any news headline. One does not have to be a blogger to share thoughts, pictures, articles, ideas or information, but more importantly, it’s not necessarily what you put into Twitter, but about what you choose to take from it.

A good place to start is to forget about how many people follow you, and concentrate on finding the most interesting people to follow.
