Prince William Wants To Follow In His Little Brother’s Military Footsteps
"In my eyes, if Harry can do it then I can do it"

Princes William and Harry got all dolled up in their military finery to appear at a media day event in the UK earlier today to talk to the press about their military training and the circumstances of their living together while they are both based at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire, England. Harry revealed to the media that he is anxious to go to war because, as he put it, if his little brother can do it (you may recall Harry was deployed to active duty in Afghanistan in late 2007) then so can he:

Call them brothers in arms: Prince William gave his strongest hint yet that he would like to follow his brother Prince Harry and go to war. “In my eyes, if Harry can do it then I can do it,” William said Thursday. “I didn’t join the forces to be mollycoddled or treated any differently.” And, he added that while others think it “impossible” for him to take a front line role, “I still remain hopeful there’s a chance.” Harry, 24, fulfilled a 10-week tour in Afghanistan, in March 2008 and is now learning to fly helicopters because, he says, it’s his “easiest way of getting to the front lines.” He joined his brother at a special media day to talk about their training and living together while they are both based at RAF Shawbury, in Shropshire, England. William is undergoing tuition to be a pilot in Royal Air Force Search and Rescue crews, while Harry is in the early stages of learning to fly army helicopters. The younger prince appears to have given up on the dream of flying high-tech Apache attack helicopters – opting for the more supportive roles of the utility chopper, the Lynx. “Brain capacity? I don’t know if I’ve got it for the Apache,” he told the media frankly. “I will fly what I am told to fly and wherever I’m told to fly.” If all goes to plan, Harry might get his chance to fly back into Afghanistan in early 2011. The brothers, who lodge together in a house off the base, also joked about what it was like to be under the same roof. “This is the first time and the last time we will be living together,” Harry said. “It’s been an emotional experience,” his older brother shot back. And he says he does all the work. “Bearing in mind I cook, I feed him every day – I think he’s done very well.” But Harry – speaking in New York recently – said he did the dishes, so what gives? “Yes, Harry does do the washing up but then he leave most of it in the sink and then I come back in the morning and I have to wash it up,” William explained, adding, “I do a fair bit of tidying up after him. He snores a lot too. He keeps me up all night long.” “Oh God, now they will think we are sharing a bed!” Harry replied, calling the claims “lies.” Despite all the banter, William, who turns 27 Sunday, might not get a birthday present from his brother. When reminded of the date, Harry said, “Oh God, it isn’t is it?” William added, “He has just realized it now and he hasn’t got my present. But I would not expect it now. I will be lucky if I get a card.” Next up for the birthday boy is a month’s training in north Wales at RAF Valley in Angelsey in the fall. His course ends at RAF Shawbury in early 2010.

While I suppose it’s admirable that Prince William wants to go to war, I don’t know that it really is feasible at all. I love the prince, I really do, but I think talking about his intense desire to go to war might be more for publicity rather than a genuine desire to put his life in harm’s way. I absolutely believe that he honestly wants to fight for his country/kingdom but if he is truly serious about going to war he shouldn’t talk about it so much. Talking about it publicly is the surest way to make sure it never happens. On a wholly different matter, doesn’t Prince Harry look better in those horrible jumpsuits than does Wills? Mebbe the elder prince just wasn’t born to be a military man.

Is it just me, or did William peak looks-wise several years ago. Harry, on the other hand, keeps getting better and better. Woot!

Look, I know Americans have royalty envy but you kicked ‘em out over 200 years ago so live with it. But if you’re going to talk about them, get it right. Typical that a Canadian has to set the story straight. It was William that said he was anxious to go to war – you’ve got a typo there. Also, the royal family doesn’t talk about going to war for publicity. They have a long and distinguished history of military service, the most recent being Harry and William’s uncle, Prince Andrew who was a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War in the early eighties. You probably never heard of that war because the US wasn’t in it. Google it!

  3. divalicious – i was just trying to find a nice way to say that!

Ditto to the comments by Divalicious and BaldOuting! Harry is the hot one now! :)

Yes, Harry looks better in the jumpsuit. And yes, Wills peaked at about 16. But I still think he looks pretty hot in that serious, thoughtful pic. You gotta watch out for those serious ones……

geez that Canadian got his panties in a twist.

People are naive if they think these two would ever (genuinely) be put in harms way … W & H should be thinking about the cost and hassle of babysitting them overseas and find another career. I remember when Prince Edward was forced to forgo his real desire of acting in the theatre and was pressured to do the family thing and join the Marines – he dropped out (good for him) … The days of Royal’s trying to be action men (for show) should be over.

ah…i love looking at harry =]

oh – i think you have a typo trent…..where you have ” Harry revealed to the media that he is anxious to go to war because, as he put it, if his little brother can do it ” – shouldn’t that be “William revealed to the media…”

Haha their banter was hilarious! It really is amazing how siblings forget each other’s birthday. My sister sometimes forget mines. :-/

The royal family should be forever grateful to Diana for the beautiful dna she mixed into their bloodline! Both those men are extremely handsome because of her!

Canuckistani: I had no idea that Americans had this so-called “royalty-envy” … I was unaware of such a thing. I don’t think I’ve ever known ANYONE with “royalty envy”….
I don’t care much for the color called mauve… but that doesn’t mean I envy it, does it?

First of all, I’m proudly Canadian & NOT a fan of the Royal Family except for Wills, Harry & their Uncle Andrew – Simply because of all the Royals they are the most… “ordinary” (for lack of a better word). Prince Andrew was for some years working his way up the theatrical ladder watching & learning before producing & narrating various documentaries on Brish history. I still burn at how badly she was treated by her in-laws & ex.

Both boys were, as far as I can remember, raised by their mother & NOT handed over to nannies, governesses, etc. – perhaps she wasn’t the first, but she did get more press for doing it. They even mixed with “commoners” far more than any generation before them (i.e. public outings surrounded by people!

Finally, I’d like to point out that because William IS heir to the throne (AFTER his father) the likelihood of his being IN the war is slim to NIL – Harry was pulled out of Afghanistan when his location was somehow leaked to the media. Fearing his being kidnapped & held hostage, the British Government ordered his immediate return to London.
    -
In an interview shortly before he left, Harry said how disappointed he was at NOT being able to serve with his fellow soldiers, but knew that he couldn’t stay & add to THEIR burden – fighting the enemy & watching him so he wouldn’t be snatched.
