Michael Jackson Reportedly Suffers Cardiac Arrest!

"He is not doing well" -- Joe Jackson
June 25th, 2009

TMZ is reporting that Michael Jackson has been rushed to the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest here in SoCal a little over an hour ago!

We’ve just learned Michael Jackson was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Los Angeles … and we’re told it was cardiac arrest and that paramedics administered CPR in the ambulance. He was picked up at his home around 20 minutes ago — we’re told his mother is on the way to visit him. The 911 call came in at 12:21PM at his Holmby Hills home in L.A.

Whoa!! Now, it should be clarified that just because he suffered cardiac arrest that doesn’t necessarily mean that his life is in danger. What it does mean, unfortch, that his upcoming string of 50 concert dates at the O2 Arena in London, England is in dire jeopardy. Jacko is scheduled to kick off his This Is It Tour on July 13 (less than a month away). Thus far, this report from TMZ is all the news we have on MJ’s condition. Here’s hoping that his condition is not serious and that he will be back on his feet again soon.

UPDATE: Oh no! TMZ has added new information from MJ’s family, none of it good news:

A Jackson family member tells TMZ Michael is in “really bad shape” and the brothers are headed to UCLA … We just got off the phone with Joe Jackson, Michael’s dad, who says “he is not doing well.”

Now I’m starting to get worried … let’s send our love and prayers for Michael Jackson’s speedy recovery!

I hope he pulls through this.

  11. Amy Says:

Wow, what a day. I hope Michael pulls through.

  12. amanda Says:

Wow, his heart couldn’t beat it. Are you serious Trent, you think this is a joke?

  13. Ann Says:

I read that he went in to cardiac arrest, which is different than a heart attack (myocardial infarction). He apparently was not breathing and received CPR en route to the hospital. Could be pretty bad depending on how long it took for the EMT’s to get to him.

  14. Scarlet Says:

    Um.. too late.
    He died.

  15. Steve Says:

    Who says he’s dead?

  17. Scarlet Says:

    Steve,
    obviously it wasn’t a joke.
I was uh.. dead serious. To say the least.

  18. Tricia Says:

Sadly – Scarlet is not joking. Many reports coming out now – he is really dead. Unbelievable. RIP Michael.

Seriously?? Trent, you crack me up. I LOVE your blog, but you should not make comments on medical stuff. Cardiac arrest means they were coding him (doing CPR, etc) because he didn’t have a heart beat. No heart beat surely puts someone’s life in danger.

  22. Felicity Says:

    @CNRA
I was just going to say that. Unless you have a defibrillator immediately on hand (1-6 minutes in cardiac arrest before a defibrillator gives you a 35% chance of living. 10 or more minutes = certain death), cardiac arrest is most certainly a death sentence. Cardiac arrest is not the same thing as a heart attack although a heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest.

“Now, it should be clarified that just because he suffered cardiac arrest that doesn’t necessarily mean that his life is in danger”

CNRA, you took the words off my finger tips. If a bystander starts CPR, you have the chance of them overreacting and jumping the gun. If Paramedics are doing CPR, your life *is* in danger.

Felicity, unfortunately, if he was asystole or in PEA, even an AED wouldn’t do any good.

Sorry to turn this into an emergency medical blog! :O)

    We’ll all miss Michael.

  24. ERNurseHeaven Says:

I agree with TraumaQueen and Felicity.. being an ER Registered Nurse, I had to laugh when I read “Now, it should be clarified that just because he suffered cardiac arrest that doesn’t necessarily mean that his life is in danger”… Uhhh… when you’re in cardiac arrest, that’s pretty damn crappy with almost always dismal results. He probably had an anterior MI (heart attack) or what we healthcare workers like to call the “widow maker”. Poor guy… he was only 50. I wonder what will happen to his kids.

  25. AmandaMarie Says:

    @ernurseheaven

I’m not even trained and I read that and I knew that cardiac arrest is damn close to death.

The difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest is major.

Heart attack – a sudden stop of hearts functions typically due to blockages of some sort… That said that can lead to…

Cardiac arrest – the total stopping of the hearts function. Which if not resuscitated within four to six minutes afterwards means the victim is pretty much not going to make it.

Jackson was in Cardiac Arrest, and I’m fairly confident (sadly) that he was already in heaven before he even got placed in the ambulance.
