We’re not talking about puppies here, but children. Why should EVERY DECENT CELEBRITY adopt an orphan? Raising a child is more than having money. It’s about being there WITH them more than the nanny is.

@ Ashley H and Trent – exactly. Malawi alone has over a half million orphans, and people still want to nitpick about celebrities adopting them. I wish EVERY DECENT CELEBRITY would adopt one or more- seriously! I don’t think people’s attitudes about this make any sense at all. I’ve never liked Madonna’s persona or her music, either- yeah, I think she comes off as ridiculous and bitchy a lot of the time, but do I think she treats her children that way? No, I’d bet anything she cares very much for them. Her persona is one thing- that doesn’t mean she’s inherently a “spoiled bitch” involved in “slave trade”- that’s so exaggerated and silly.

Lots of riches don’t mean these kids will be cared for. Madonna is a spoil b-tch screaming for some bodies kid. What about the father? why was he not giving a chance to rise his daughter? Here is another child for the nanny to rise.
I hope Mercy’s family choke on the money Madonna paid them for this child.

@lindyloo…you should re-read your first response and see how you sound.
It DOES matter who picks this child up. For a start, Mercy is leaving the place she’s called home and everything that is familiar. Some stranger will take her away throw her in a plane on a long flight to be deposited in another equally strange house. Can you imagine how confusing that is going to be? Madonna should be there picking her up… comforting and reassuring her. When you’re a mother, you put yourself second (or third or forth or fifth as the case may be). You juggle work and seeing as how Madge is her own boss, she could take the time out of her schedule to collect her new child. Also getting malaria vaccines and other crap would not be for the media, but is a health requirement to enter a lot of countries.
Throwing a handful of cash does not show how much she cares about Malawians, just shows how self-important she thinks she is. And in the end money does talk I guess.
Yes, this little girl will probably have a fabulous life. She’ll have everything money can buy and then some. She might spend some quality time with her mother when her busy schedule permits. She might acquire an international accent just like David Banda, who speaks with an Aussie accent because apparently he spent more time with his Aussie nanny than anyone else.
I’m not saying that this little girl doesn’t deserve to be adopted. I’m not even saying that Madonna shouldn’t adopt her I suppose, but I hope it’s for the right reasons.
At any rate, it will be interesting to read the auto-biographies of these kids in a few years….and no doubt there will be.

It was never proved that he was her father & her grandmother and other family members who have senority power wise denied him the right to do so because he ran like hell when he was first told that he was the father. So why the interest now… Probably something to do with the other organizations in Malawai who were opposing the adoption because they felt as if they deserved some of Madonna’s money not one child.

I agree that there is a situation in the USA with a lot of children who need to be adopted. I hear it is very expensive $40,000 upwards to adopt in the USA which makes it difficult to a lot of normal people to afford. Rules abroad maybe easier (although not in Madonna’s case) and I think the point some celebrities are trying to make is to rasie the profile of some countries which really have much worse problems than the USA. In my mind whether they are in Malawai or USA they still need to be adopted…

Again I am happy for this child very very happy that she now has a family. If it was all about publicity for Madonna she could have dropped this two years ago when it first presented a problem but she has persevered and I look forward to seeing Lola and the rest of the kids growing up Cicone!

Normally I wouldn’t comment about this story, but I gotta say that while I think it’s terrific this child will surely be loved and well taken care of and will likely return to her country of origin someday to help, what about all the orphans in this country and the foster children in this country that are languishing in either state run facilities or going from foster home to foster home? I am all for adoption, but why can’t celebrities who want to bring attention to this issue shed some light on the children in the US? Plus, whatever happened to the man who claimed to be Mercy’s father? Did he just get pushed aside or was it confirmed he wasn’t her father? I never heard.

@Kim — But, as a mom, can’t you see how life with a family will be light years better than life in a poor orphanage? I know I’m not calling Madonna “Mother Theresa”, I see her as a caring mother who loves her children and fought to add this precious little girl to her family. Instead of focusing on the negative, why not look at the amazing positives?

@jj this has nothing nothing to do with material possessions, it has a lot to do with the person who is adopting Mercy.
Madonna is a good mother, she has worked very hard all her life to get where she is, her children go to good schools and get tought to look beyond the material possession, have you ever heared Lola speak? M has tought these kids how to be decent human beings,. love her or hate her, you cannot deny that she has always been inquisitive and interested in art, literature and other forms of music, Madonna is not an illiterate moron, very far from that.

why should it matter who picks her up? M was told that she couldn’t adopted her a few months back, she took it on the chin and got on with her life, but stayed hopeful, she is now in rehearsals for the summer tour and can’t exactly drop everything just for a few hours there and back again, which will involve her getting malaria vaccines and all sorts of crap just to satisfy the media.
M has proved over and over again that she cares about Malawi and that she cares about her children, anyone who says she doesn’t is a fucking liar, I wish people would just leave her be.

Guess y’ all missed the part about how she can’t even be bothered to go pick her up. She’s sending a private plane to gather up her newest purchase.

Since when does being in a rich family / atmosphere automatically dictate that a child will have a good life? Yeah, she might have an education and fancy clothes but she’ll also be essentially raised by nannies. No father–just a countless parade of whomever Madonna is dating at the time.
Ask Drew Barrymore about her childhood.

I have nothing against Madonna but lately it seems like celebs want kids as a fashion accessory. I AM a mom and I love kids. Maybe this is the best we can do but I will have no part in cannonizing someone like Madonna as some sort of Mother Theresa.

Malawi has over half a million orphans. The child has a chance at a great life education and family instead of a life surrounded by poverty and disease and in most cases death. Both Mercy and David may come back in years to come to help their people. The likelihood of their being a flock of people to Malawi to adopt ophans is slim to none, Madonna was the first individual with celebrity status to adopt from there that I know of and many people who want to adopt I am sure will want a child as quickly as possible they do not want to go through a two to three year wait with legal battles adding up to millions. In addition a lot of the children from these areas have parents who have died from AIDS and that is another risk that you take when adopting these children. Sorry but I am overjoyed that this child has a future and that Madonna has donated money to the area for others.

I am one of those many. I have no doubt that Madonna will be able to take care of this child, but that doesn’t mean she should be allowed to. “A narrow interpretation based on old laws”, eh? Well, good to know; every non-celebrity looking to adopt should flock to Malawi now too, see if those laws are interpreted in the same positive way for people with a little less fame and fortune.
