Evanescence Gets A New Name, A New Singer
Meet The Fallen

Remember when Evanescence was the biggest former Christian band turned pop-goth group in the country? Remember when Amy Lee used to front that band? Yeah, well all of that is over. After the band achieved success on the pop charts, Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody left the band due to “artistic differences” with Lee … and then the rest of the band followed suit. Amy Lee held on to the band name and then … disappeared. Now, the former members of Evanescence (sans Amy Lee, obvs) have teamed up with former American Idol contestant Carly Smithson to create a new band called The Fallen. Coincidentally (or mebbe not), The Fallen was the title of Evanescence‘s big break-out album. A formal announcement of this new band will come on Monday but here is our first look at the newly created band:

American Idol powerhouse vocalist Carly Smithson is joining the original guys of Evanescence, who are relaunching as a hard-rock band called The Fallen. They’ll make a formal announcement Monday in Hollywood, with a news conference and their first live performance. Debut song Bury Me Alive will be available at that time for free download at wearethefallen.com. The lineup consists of Smithson and three of the four original members of Evanescence — guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray — as well as bassist Marty O’Brien, whose recording and touring credits include Disturbed and Kelly Clarkson. “This all happened by accident,” says Smithson, who sang Evanescence’s Bring Me to Life during the 2008 Idols Live tour. She’s friends with Moody’s housemate, Monique Morrison. “I met him once or twice (at the house) before the band thing,” says Smithson, who had been working on a solo project. Though Smithson and Moody both shared similar visions with Morrison for bands they wanted to form, Moody wasn’t ready to bite. “I’m sometimes hard-headed, and it took me a while” to give the Idol a shot, Moody says. But when another artist persuaded him to check out YouTube videos of Smithson performing, “I just kind of freaked out.” Moody called Morrison and asked her to arrange a meeting. “She happened to be with Carly and said, ‘We’ll be there in 20 minutes.’ “Carly is a rock star,” he adds. “She was one of us.” … The new group’s name alludes to Evanescence’s 2003 major-label debut album, Fallen, which has sold 7 million copies in the USA. Moody left Evanescence shortly after Fallen, citing creative differences with singer Amy Lee. LeCompt and Gray followed in 2007. Lee continues to perform under the Evanescence name, though the group hasn’t released an album since 2006. The Fallen plans to tour in September and initially will release its songs in small doses every few months, Moody says, “so there’s always new music and new reasons to come to another show.”

While I don’t necessarily think the pop-goth thing is gonna work the second time around I can respect the band for giving it another go. I understand that the Evanescence guys were none too pleased with the way that Amy Lee commandeered the spotlight and made the success all about her. I can say with utmost honesty that the worst concert I ever witnessed was an Amy Lee fronted Evanescence concert. My friends and I saw them perform at The Greek Theater back in November of 2007 and hated every second of it … the crowd booed when it was over. I suppose I should send out good luck vibes to The Fallen on their attempt at making another go of it … I’m just glad that Amy Lee remains in hiding. I’m sending out good luck wives to them, too. I love Carly and Ben Moody. He has a great song with Anastacia called “Everything Burns” from the Fantastic Four soundtrack. (Well, at least I like the song. LOL).

  2. Jadedkitten says:

You went to a Evanescence concert…….hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  3. Katie says:

Um…I’m just sad that more crappy music will be made. And I’m pointing and laughing at you, Trent, for going to an Evanescence concert. :-P

  4. jill says:

Big poop sandwich on the new band name. Sounds like a bunch of angst ridden prepubescent teenagers who practice in their garage and are gearing up for battle of the bands at their local YMCA and needed a new name stat.

I really like Carly, so I’m interested. I couldn’t stand Amy Lee, so I’m more interested in them now than I was before lol

  8. kiddo says:

but i look forward to this colab!

  9. Zsofi says:

I never liked the former singer. All I heard is that she kept critisizing everybody in pop business. Lame.

  10. nysro says:

Amy Lee got full of herself, and though she was better than the band.. Serves her right that she has essentially melted away since then…

Kinda cute, kinda talented, a whole lotta bitch…

  11. Mrs. Clarkson says:

As my name suggests, I can’t hate on Ben moody as he worked on Breakaway helping with Since U Been Gone and Hazel Eyes. Dave Hodges? That’s another story, lol. I wish them well. Carly sure can sing…

  12. AC says:

As someone who watched american idol, carly does not have a rock voice! and her voice personality was kinda grating. She’s more of a balladeer, but it is funny that they try and replace amy lee with someone that kinda looks like her. My only question is who’s going to buy concert tickets to their tour when they don’t even have an album out? or at least a hit?

  13. rebelgrrrli says:

    @ nysro, I totally agree!

  14. Sarah says:

I loved Carly…I will be sure to check their songs out but I really hope it’s not the exact same thing as Evane…whatever that band’s name. I care so little for them I cant even be bothered to look up how to spell it.

  15. Heather says:

Ok ok, so I used to be a huge Evanescence fan and then Amy turned into a raging bitch and fired everyone because she was “the boss”.
The rest of the guys have actually been making music with side projects and such for YEARS, this isn’t just some random “omg, lets replace Amy!” thing that just happened. I’m actually really surprised at this because Ben Moody is coming out with a new solo album and the rest of the guys have been in another band, Machina, for quite some time now.
Ben Moody said a couple weeks ago that he had some “really heavy stuff” coming out soon…meaning this, I assume. I look forward to hearing them and seeing if they’re good…especially since Carly is a TON better then Amy.

First things first, I’m not expecting much from “Evanescence 2.0″ or, shall I say, The Fallen. Carly is fronting the band and I cannot stand her voice.

And the concert you went to was the concert where Amy was sick. I mean, you yourself had a case of a soar throat after the concert thus isn’t it possible that Amy’s cold got worse during the night? She did sound horrible when she first began touring but she significantly improved when the second album came out.

TBH, I don’t know what happened with the whole “firing of the band” issue but I doubt Amy wanted the spotlight to the extreme where she’d fire the rest of the band. However, we’ll never know the issue, but it just seems your hate for the band is due to a band concert which seems rather immature.

  17. Jay Jay says:

Are you kidding me?! While I will definitely give a listen to this new band you can’t call them the new Evanescence. Amy Lee has a voice that stands out in the sounds of heavy instruments. While I did like several of Carly’s performances on AI, I highly doubt she has the type of voice that will carry like Amy’s.

I have seen Evanescence live 3 times and they’ve all been great concerts. Sucks that you see someone live once and say you hate them.

  18. Alias says:

    *BAD CONCERT

And I still love you Trent :)

  19. Steve says:

    @AC

This band will not be putting out a album anytime soon. It will mostly be a touring project and releasing a few songs digitally.

  20. tatiana says:

I think Carly will turn this band around. She was my favorite on American Idol that year, and she HAS ONE HELL OF A VOICE. She blows the psycho Amy Lee out of the water. Im sure the band wont even sound the same.
