Evanescence Gets A New Name, A New Singer
Meet The Fallen

Remember when Evanescence was the biggest former Christian band turned pop-goth group in the country? Remember when Amy Lee used to front that band? Yeah, well all of that is over. After the band achieved success on the pop charts, Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody left the band due to “artistic differences” with Lee … and then the rest of the band followed suit. Amy Lee held on to the band name and then … disappeared. Now, the former members of Evanescence (sans Amy Lee, obvs) have teamed up with former American Idol contestant Carly Smithson to create a new band called The Fallen. Coincidentally (or mebbe not), The Fallen was the title of Evanescence‘s big break-out album. A formal announcement of this new band will come on Monday but here is our first look at the newly created band:

American Idol powerhouse vocalist Carly Smithson is joining the original guys of Evanescence, who are relaunching as a hard-rock band called The Fallen. They’ll make a formal announcement Monday in Hollywood, with a news conference and their first live performance. Debut song Bury Me Alive will be available at that time for free download at wearethefallen.com. The lineup consists of Smithson and three of the four original members of Evanescence — guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray — as well as bassist Marty O’Brien, whose recording and touring credits include Disturbed and Kelly Clarkson. “This all happened by accident,” says Smithson, who sang Evanescence’s Bring Me to Life during the 2008 Idols Live tour. She’s friends with Moody’s housemate, Monique Morrison. “I met him once or twice (at the house) before the band thing,” says Smithson, who had been working on a solo project. Though Smithson and Moody both shared similar visions with Morrison for bands they wanted to form, Moody wasn’t ready to bite. “I’m sometimes hard-headed, and it took me a while” to give the Idol a shot, Moody says. But when another artist persuaded him to check out YouTube videos of Smithson performing, “I just kind of freaked out.” Moody called Morrison and asked her to arrange a meeting. “She happened to be with Carly and said, ‘We’ll be there in 20 minutes.’ “Carly is a rock star,” he adds. “She was one of us.” … The new group’s name alludes to Evanescence’s 2003 major-label debut album, Fallen, which has sold 7 million copies in the USA. Moody left Evanescence shortly after Fallen, citing creative differences with singer Amy Lee. LeCompt and Gray followed in 2007. Lee continues to perform under the Evanescence name, though the group hasn’t released an album since 2006. The Fallen plans to tour in September and initially will release its songs in small doses every few months, Moody says, “so there’s always new music and new reasons to come to another show.”

While I don’t necessarily think the pop-goth thing is gonna work the second time around I can respect the band for giving it another go. I understand that the Evanescence guys were none too pleased with the way that Amy Lee commandeered the spotlight and made the success all about her. I can say with utmost honesty that the worst concert I ever witnessed was an Amy Lee fronted Evanescence concert. My friends and I saw them perform at The Greek Theater back in November of 2007 and hated every second of it … the crowd booed when it was over. I suppose I should send out good luck vibes to The Fallen on their attempt at making another go of it … I’m just glad that Amy Lee remains in hiding. Sorry but Amy Lee has an amazing voice and she can sing very well live, I think it’s pretty pathetic you just hate on her for one bad concert. *EXACTLY why BRITNEY lip syncs* cough cough…. anyways Amy Lee was the star of Evanescence, and it was essentially her who did all the writing for the second album. I hear Amy is coming out with another album, I can’t wait.

Ugh. Evanescence. My problem with Evanescence is that they were essentially a metal band with an opera singer. At about that same time I was in a all-girl band, and our singer was, ta-dah, a trained opera singer who fancied herself a rocker. And much like Miss Lee, decide it was All. About. Her. Which is why I don’t do music anymore. ;)
I was hoping you’d seen them as the opener for someone halfway decent, but ah well. Go to enough concerts and you’ll eventually pay to see a crap band. Mine was The Killers.

I really love Evanescence and *gasp* even Amy Lee. I enjoy her voice (and I love the opera/metal mix myself) and the albums the band has done. It’s the music that’s had the most staying power with me. Unfortch, Ev doesn’t record very much and it sounds as though Amy Lee’s next projects will not be similar to what she has done in the past.

I like Carly Smithson too and I hope that The Fallen has the same sort of music that I enjoyed with Ev. There aren’t enough good female singers of hard(ish) rock music. I’m looking forward to see what they are going to do.

Re: the name. It’s probably not only a play on the first Ev album title but also a reference to the fact that the band had “fallen” out of grace with Ev, or something like that.

Not the first time a lead singer has moved on from the band … she was the star. I wouldn’t have a clue who the guys in the band behind her were … Amy just did what every GUY in a successful rock band does – and she’s gets called a bitch for it. Let the girl ROCK however she wants to.

  5. Sara says:

I think it’s interesting that so many people blame Amy for anything that made the band break up. Is that just because she was a female frontwoman? So she had to be a bitch and a diva because she’s a chick and it couldn’t have had anything to do with any guy in the band or what they had going on in their lives? The guys didn’t split off all at once, either. I totally agree with Joanne, she can rock however she wants to. I love all of Evanescence’s music and I have always loved Amy’s voice.

I liked Carly on AI… we’ll see what this sounds like.

  6. Farore says:

Evanescence is amazing… or was.. I saw them 3 times live and they weren’t sucky by any means indoors.. however the one ourdoor concert i saw the audio wasn’t so great.

Amy got married and wants to focus on her personal life.
    Why is that a crime?
Gwen Stefani is also a diva-bitch since everything was about her in photoshoots and interviews while in a band…

I dunno. Amy is cool. I’ve met her once and she seemed really grounded. Not a froo-froo.
I’m all for Amy. She plays piano beautifully and has a lovely voice.

  7. Shazz says:

Finally fuckface Amy’s gone. I dont even like Evanescence, but i’m happy for everyone that that monster’s gone.

  8. we are the fallen NEVER ITS GOING TO BE AT THE HIGH OF EVANESCENCE, NEVER I MEAN IT. AMY LEE IS UNIQUE, AND NO ONE CAN COMPARE HER
