Everyone who has issues over this movie, need to get over it.. IT IS A DAMNED movie… Don’t read more into than needs to be… Comedy always makes fun of someone, and everyone usualy lives.. Some laugh, some hate it… but DONT MAKE MORE OF IT … IT’S JUST A MOVIE!!!!!

@Meghan – I totally agree. That’s the point, you lay out every stereotype possible to show people how ridiculous they are. It’s like no one has ever heard of satire…

Cohen’s characters are the joke. People are laughing at them. That is why he has done anti-semitic characters but not jewish ones. Therefore the movie is anti-gay, it only perpetuates bigoted stereotypes.

A lot of people (most of the commenters, and even Trent) are already misinterpreting his message. His characters are NOT the joke. They are funny, yes, but the humor in his characters is intended for an immediate effect (the initial HA!, if you will). What we should be more concerned with is the people he chooses to include in his film. He films with people that are unaware of his fame, people who don’t even recognize that Bruno is merely a character (yes, guys…most of the film is NOT paid actors!), to poke fun at HOMOPHOBIA, not HOMOSEXUALS. He brings stereotypes to extremes in order to dimiss them (i.e. discusses anti-Semitism, and in Bruno, dresses as a mock-cropped Hasidic Jew, and yet, Sacha Baron Cohen is a practicing Jew with a profound respect for the religion).

Don’t take the characters seriously, guys, just be appalled at the half-naked guys who chant G-A-Y T-V and are later shocked to hear that they are appearing on Austrian Gay TV.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to an advance screening of this movie back in May – my understanding is that it wasn’t the final final cut, but pretty close. I am also a complete hag (said with love of course) and all gay rights causes are near and dear to my heart. That said, I laughed my ass off at this movie. I don’t believe that Sacha Baron Cohen’s point is to make fun of gay people and to promote stereotypes – it’s to make fun of the people who actually buy into those stereotypes. The movie was ridiculous and over the top (of course) and it won’t be for everyone, but I don’t think anyone needs to get their panties in a bunch over it. :)
