Adam Lambert Does ‘Rolling Stone’ Magazine
“I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay.”

Adam Lambert, the runner-up in this year’s American Idol competition, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine. As was widely expected, Lambert opens up in the coverstory titled Wild Idol: The Psychedelic Transformation and Sexual Liberation of Adam Lambert and comes clean about his much speculated-about sexuality … telling Rolling Stone that he doesn’t think “it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that [he's] gay”. On that account, I think he’s right. Here is Adam‘s RS coverphoto and a portion of his coverstory interview:

American Idol’s glamtastic runner-up Adam Lambert opens up in the next issue of Rolling Stone, speaking frankly about his sexuality, though he doesn’t think his revelation is particularly shocking. “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay,” Lambert says in the new issue of Rolling Stone, hitting newsstands this week. The flamboyant Idol singer hits our cover and bares all, talking about his childhood (”I started to realize I wasn’t like every other boy,” he says), the drug-fueled Burning Man epiphany that led him to AI (”I realized that we all have our own power, and that whatever I wanted to do, I had to make happen,” he tells RS) and his run on the show (”I was like, ‘I’m going to glue rhinestones on my eyelids, bitch!’ “). And yes, he talks about his sexuality. “Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler,’ ” he tells us. “I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context. “I’m proud of my sexuality,” Lambert adds. “I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.” Ultimately, however Lambert tells RS contributor Vanessa Grigoriadis that there are other parts of his life that he’s trying to keep front and center. “I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader,” he says. It was that mission — and his Burning Man “psychedelic experience” — that lead him to Idol after years in musical theater. “I knew that it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it’s fast and broad,” he tells RS. He details his experience on Idol, his true thoughts on winner Kris Allen and how his sexuality impacted his Idol run in our cover story, “Wild Idol: The Psychedelic Transformation and Sexual Liberation of Adam Lambert,” which hits newsstands this week.

I’m happy to hear that Adam is proud of his sexuality and choosing to openly discuss a personal matter like that on the cover of a major magazine is pretty much proof of that fact. I completely understand why he wouldn’t want to talk about any of his personal biz while he was competing on American Idol. While it works to the advantage of some competitors to talk to the voting audience about their wife/husband and kids, we still live in an age where discussing your homosexuality would still work against you. In any event, it’s very cool that Adam is finally feeling free enough to talk about his life as openly and honestly as possible. After the jump, check out a few behind-the-scenes photos from Adam‘s Rolling Stone covershoot …

Adam talks with the mag a bit more in a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot which you can watch in full HERE. So … Adam‘s out, no one is surprised and now he can go about his biz of carrying on with his music career. I gotta say tho … I wonder what Kris Allen is feeling that his runner-up scored the cover of Rolling Stone magazine before he did.

I wasn’t an Adam Lambert fan during A.I. his singing style just wasn’t mine. However, I love this cover and interview. I love the way that it’s put “I don’t think that it should be a suprise for anybody”. It’s admirable that he wasn’t trying to hide anything nor did he change the person that he was. He allowed people to draw thier own conclusions and allowed people to love him for who he was. I am always a fan and supporter of those who say “this is who I am take it or leave it” there is nothing sexier or more inspiring than those who know who they are and don’t hide it or change. Kudos to you Adam!!

I’m not surprised at all by the revelation, but I am shocked at how crude he is. This all seems like an article lifted from the pages of Blender than Rolling Stone. And he really does have bad skin. LOL

  4. ~ I n F a m o u s ~ says:

it was obvious so i don’t know why he wasted his time. i really don’t know why people were so obsessed with hearing him say it. oh well, there.. lets see if people move on.

  5. ju-ju-bean says:

    HOTT!

    I love it.

Question: What the hell is he laying on?

  6. Kent says:

The most interesting thing about this to me is that he’s “coming out” in Rolling Stone. I can’t think of any other stars that’ve come out in that magazine, but I’d be very curious to know of any others. Did Pete Townsend, or somebody older like him, ever do it before in this mag or is Lambert the first one?

  7. Sweet_Lady says:

i just don’t care about this guy.

But by “outing himself” he creates more press for himself.

  8. Jadedkitten says:

First the bitches from the hills, then the Jonas brothers, then gaga now this? I swear I’m seconds away from cancelling my subscription to Rolling Stone.

I think any out gay famous person is a great thing and I loved Adam on AI, but I must say he seems to be getting a big ego already. Too bad! This wont help the all gay men are DIVA’s reputation much. Also show some class and enough with the f*** words Adam.

  10. Blair says:

    Love him.

  11. Margie says:

I love Adam and kudos to him for not telling during the run of the show. It wasn’t about his sexuality but the singing competition.

  12. Lana says:

oh my god i want to have his babies!!!

  13. Nettie says:

Really sorry… Not a fan… though undeniably talented, his singing and other style does nothing for me. Although he does have a dress sense all of his own, which does work for him, the overarching reaction I get when looking at him is the he always looks kind of unhealthy. Also, he has this habit to sticking (almost spitting) his tongue out when singing that makes my skin crawl. Good singer, though, there is no question of that, even if I don’t like his style not particularly his taste in music. Ah well, people do have different tastes and I’m sure he’ll do well irregardless (;-) of what anyone thinks of him …

  14. JJ says:

I love Adam! Maybe it’s just because I like him, but I’m always surprised when people say he seems like he has a big ego. Watching his interview and seeing him on Idol the thing that always struck me was how humble he is. I think he has a lot of confidence in himself and knows he has talent but he always seemed very humble about it and always had nice things to say about the other contestants. Oh, well, I can’t wait for his album to come out! I will mostly definitely buy it on iTunes!

  15. Troy says:

I don’t know. I am offended that he says “Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler.” That just really bothers me. When I came out 4yrs ago it was a very hard thing for me and I feel like he is just making lite of the issue. I know I am probably in the minority, but it still kinda hurt.

  16. Yonas Michael says:

@Troy – I dont think he was talking about coming out privately to all of his friends and family, since that probably happened a long time ago. That would be more serious and personal.

But as far as an announcement to the media, that’s totally impersonal and all about publicity anyway, so why not go to Rolling Stone for a “cooler” cover story?

  17. Derek says:

I’m glad he finally did it, so people hopefully won’t focus on his sexuality anymore

  18. Janelle says:

I kind of wish people didn’t feel like it was mandatory to come out in a huge-ass story and it was like Freddy Mercury where he didn’t ever publicly announce it. He was a private person and almost never granted interviews, but he didn’t feel like he had to talk about his homosexuality. (Don’t be mistaken, I love it and am happy for the person when they are ready to come out) But I feel America is so bent-over on “OMG, he’s GAY! He needs to have a coverstory on it!” There’s not even a need to publicly come out anymore if it’s obvious. I don’t think i’m making sense in my ramble, I’m sorry…

  19. Jodi says:

    @ Jadedkitten – I already did :-/
I still don’t understand how this is news.

  20. bopeep says:

@ trent – i dont think kris minds at all, i totally believe he is sincere enough when he said he is proud of adam… and he knew from the very beginning adam got more attention than he did, nothing new to him… it just so happened that he won…
