‘G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra’ Releases A New Batch Of Promo Pics

Pros vs. Joes
Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Last week we got our first look at the newest international poster for the upcoming Summer blockbuster G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra … and today we get to check out a new batch of promo stills from the film … behold:

A number of brand new “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” pictures have been unraveled. Three of the new photos present some members of the G.I. Joe team, the other two take the focus on Sienna Miller’s The Baroness, while one displays the battle between Lee Byung-Hun’s Storm Shadow and Ray Park’s Snake Eyes … Based on the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy franchise, “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” is set ten years in the future and chronicling the rise of the Cobra Organization. It also revolves around Duke and Ripcord’s introduction to the elite G.I. Joe team, and follows the team from the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps as they fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the Cobra in plunging the world into chaos. Directed by “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” producer Stephen Sommers, the action movie sees the likes of Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Rachel Nichols, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Eccleston among the cast ensemble. It is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on August 7.

Yeah, I’m such a geek for this shizz. While the boy inside me is really looking forward to seeing the forces of G.I. Joe battle the nefarious Cobra bad guys, the bigger boy inside me is really looking forward to Channing Tatum in all of that superhero spandex crime-fighting wear. I’m also looking forward to Sienna Miller’s portrayal of The Baroness … I just hope she doesn’t eff it up. The Baroness is one of my fave G.I. Joe characters (big shocker) and I’m hoping her portrayal on the big screen does her justice. We’re just 2 months away from finding out. Do y’all think she can hack it? Is anyone else out there really lookin’ forward to seeing this movie?

Conan O’Brien Discusses His Super Mario Brothers-esque Backdrop

The Mushroom Kingdom in the room
Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Conan O’Brien finally caught wind that the Internet has been buzzing that the background created for his new set on The Tonight Show bears a striking resemblance to the video game Super Mario Brothers and decided to talk about it on last night’s episode:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

While it has been revealed that the set backdrop may not have been taken directly from the video game, I still contend that the similarities between the set design and the Super Mario Brothers video game look way too similar to be a mere coincidence. After the jump, check out video of Conan talking about the similarities himself on last night’s ep of The Tonight Show

Happy To Be In LaLa Land

The TV Guide
Saturday, June 6th, 2009

David and I made our way back to SoCal safe and sound last night … tho not without a wee bit of a snafu. Our flight was delayed an hour due to weather (somewhere else, it wasn’t raining in Detroit or LA) but as far as delays go, this one wasn’t all that bad at all. The extra time allowed me to watch, in full, V: The Final Battle on my iPhone:

As you may recall, I was able to watch the entirety of the original miniseries V on the flight to Detroit last week in preparation for the ABC remake of V that is scheduled as a midseason replacement next year. Just as I loved the V miniseries, V: The Final Battle was just as awesome. I had truly forgotten what a great story V offered. All of the most memorable moments from the V phenomenon in the 80’s are featured in V: The Final Battle (with the highlight being the birth of the lizard baby). Fans of the original 80’s miniseries should seek out the DVDs and watch it all over again … it’s pretty damn fantastic.

Because we got in so late, there wasn’t any time to go out and meet up with some friends who were hanging out. We got home, dropped our bags and pretty much passed out.

Tonight is gonna be superfun tho! David and I will be attending the 10th Anniversary Party for All American Guys at Eleven here in West Hollywood, CA tonight and I am very excited:

It will be such a treat to see all those Hot Dudes live and in person. I’ll do my best to have fun pics to share tomorrow ;)

Also, I’ll be rooting for the Detroit Red Wings who play Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI tonight!

We are just 2 games away from winning the 2009 Stanley Cup! I know the mighty Wings will get the job done right!! Go Wings!!

Twitter Makes The Cover Of ‘Time’ Magazine

Sign of the 'Time'
Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Yesterday, while David and I were making our way thru Detroit Metro Airport heading for our departure gate, I noticed that Twitter was featured on the cover of the new issue of Time magazine. Seemingly overnight, the micro-blogging site has taken over the world and that fact is fortified by the fact that a publication like Time has taken notice. Here is the cover of the new issue of Time magazine along with a portion of the coverstory article:

The one thing you can say for certain about Twitter is that it makes a terrible first impression. You hear about this new service that lets you send 140-character updates to your “followers,” and you think, Why does the world need this, exactly? It’s not as if we were all sitting around four years ago scratching our heads and saying, “If only there were a technology that would allow me to send a message to my 50 friends, alerting them in real time about my choice of breakfast cereal.” I, too, was skeptical at first. I had met Evan Williams, Twitter’s co-creator, a couple of times in the dotcom ’90s when he was launching Blogger.com. Back then, what people worried about was the threat that blogging posed to our attention span, with telegraphic, two-paragraph blog posts replacing long-format articles and books. With Twitter, Williams was launching a communications platform that limited you to a couple of sentences at most. What was next? Software that let you send a single punctuation mark to describe your mood? And yet as millions of devotees have discovered, Twitter turns out to have unsuspected depth. In part this is because hearing about what your friends had for breakfast is actually more interesting than it sounds. The technology writer Clive Thompson calls this “ambient awareness”: by following these quick, abbreviated status reports from members of your extended social network, you get a strangely satisfying glimpse of their daily routines. We don’t think it at all moronic to start a phone call with a friend by asking how her day is going. Twitter gives you the same information without your even having to ask. The social warmth of all those stray details shouldn’t be taken lightly. But I think there is something even more profound in what has happened to Twitter over the past two years, something that says more about the culture that has embraced and expanded Twitter at such extraordinary speed. Yes, the breakfast-status updates turned out to be more interesting than we thought. But the key development with Twitter is how we’ve jury-rigged the system to do things that its creators never dreamed of. In short, the most fascinating thing about Twitter is not what it’s doing to us. It’s what we’re doing to it.

I realize that once something “cool” reaches the masses in this way it immediately becomes “uncool” and starts its decline into oblivion … but I am such a fan of Twitter that I can’t help but love reading about it, getting other people to use it and use it myself. At first, I had no interest in using the service primarily because I knew less than 5 people who were on Twitter at this time last year (and none of them were my close friends). It seemed pointless to participate when there was no one to play with. Kay Hanley (@kayhanley) of Letters to Cleo blogged the praises of Twitter late last Summer and I thought I’d give it a try. By that point, there was a thriving community of Twitter users and I began to see the appeal. While detractors like to point out the seeming “pointlessness” of the medium, I only see the positives. Yes, it may be boring to hear about what people are having for breakfast … but that’s not all you get. You hear what other folks are tweeting about at concerts you cannot attend or while watching the same TV shows (or sporting events) that you are watching. The conversation is global … and you can be a part of it. You can contribute or you can just follow along. I run into funny or fun stuff all the time that I love sharing with my friends … usually by text message. Twitter allows one to share those fun things with anyone who’s interested anywhere in the world. I’m a big Twitter fan … you can follow me at @trentvanegas if you want … but even if you don’t, I strongly suggest those of you who have yet to check out the service to give it a try and join the conversation. I promise, it’s the most fun you can have in 140 characters or less.

Lo Bosworth Befriends Kristin Cavallari On ‘The Hills’

Loyalty is only skin deep
Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Now that Lauren LC Conrad is no longer a part of the MTV reality TV series The Hills but her best friend Lauren Lo Bosworth still is, it appears that Lo needs to cozy up to the new star of the show in order to get some screentime. While I seem to recall that Lo never really had any personal beef with Kristin back when they were both on Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, there is no question that Lo was strongly on Team LC (which is diametrically opposed to being on Team Kristin). But a new day has dawned, Kristin is the new Queen Bee on The Hills and that means … you want screentime, you want to be hangin’ out with Kristin Cavallari:

The ladies lunched at Lola’s Cafe here in SoCal Thursday and looked as if they got along famously … that is, except for the times that KC looked bored out of her mind that Lo was even there. Hahahahaha … this shizz is so childishly high school, I love it. While I enjoyed much of the drama that we got on The Hills in previous seasons, I was really a fan of the juvenile ridiculousness of Laguna Beach more than anything. I’m hoping that some of that foolishness will be injected into The Hills in the coming season. It’d be great if some other LB alums showed up in the new season as well … like Talan, Trey, Polster — FTW!! Here’s hoping the new season of The Hills offers less contrived drama and more actual juvenile sniping. Call me crazy but I miss when reality TV actually showcased reality.
