That’s a good point, iamjoeybradley. People in the Bible Belt tend to be less educated and marry earlier, and marry because they feel they must get married, and they therefore have a higher rate of domestic abuse and divorce. In the Islamic world it’s even more of an extreme (except for the divorce because they are not allowed), so the religious fundamentalists are obviously doing something wrong with the institution of marriage in addition to turning people away from their religions with their intolerant views and warped view of Christ’s message.

Straight couples pose the greatest danger to corrupting marriage – the divorce rate is 50% in our country and even higher among evangelicals according to the Barna Research Group, and among those, Baptists in the Bible Belt were the mostly likely to get divorced. I don’t believe marriage should be governed by the state – so much so, my wife and I opted out of a license and signed a marriage covenant instead. Marriage is a religious institution – why haven’t the church and state people done something about this?

Preach! She gets it. During the election, when I said that I believed Obama was the more Christian of the two candidates, you would not believe the hatred that was thrown at me from the most self-proclaimed “Christian” people. What is Christian and what is not is so misunderstood by perhaps a majority of the population. As a resident of the Bible Belt, I am confronted with and frustrated by this every single day.

It never ceases to amaze me how in a world filled with so much hate, people will always deny others the right to love. I am thankful that I believe in a loving (not a vengeful) God, and believe that all consenting legal adults should have the right to love and marry whomever they choose. If we are going to not allow same-sex marriage, then divorce between hetero couples should be banned–after all, marriage is sacred, right?

While I agree that the passage of Prop 8 was a travesty, it annoys me that people continue to confuse the “Christian path” with loving and accepting all forms of whatever the hell we come up with next. Jesus had nothing to say about social issues of his time- he confronted sin as he met it, urging those who he touched to sin no more. Unfortch, he’s not here anymore, so we have to do the best we can with what we’ve got- and since gay marriage is a legal/social issue, we ought to leave it to the legal structures in place to take care of it.

Ok… So when Tori voices her opinion in support of gay marriage she is amazing and should be patted on the back but when Miss California voices her opinion she is a bigot and a terrible person. So it isn’t about voicing an opinion, it is about having the correct opinion.
