NBC Renews ‘Southland’, Ben McKenzie Remains Arrestingly Hawt

My fave show I'm not watching
May 5th, 2009

Good news for fans of the new NBC cop drama Southland which stars Benjamin McKenzie and Michael CudlitzNBC has ordered 13 more eps of the midseason replacement series for airing next season. I must confess that while I’ve never watched a single ep of the show, I kinda love it because there is a main gay character (who isn’t a run-of-the-mill stereotype) and because Ben McKenzie looks great in a cop uniform. Here are a couple pics of Ben shooting new scenes on the SoCal set of Southland this week:

NBC has renewed the cop drama “Southland,” picking up 13 episodes of the series. The Los Angeles-set show, which stars Ben McKenzie, was a late addition to NBC’s midseason slate. It got off to a strong start in “ER”’s Thursday 10 p.m. slot. The ratings have since slipped, but the network brass has been high on “Southland” for its broad appeal, creative potential and producer John Wells’ (”ER”) solid track record as a showrunner.

David actually watches Southland and he loves the show cuz it’s good but as I said, I just like the uniforms ;) I suppose I should start watching the show myself … now that NBC will be bringing it back for more eps, I’ll have more time to get invested. Do any of y’all watch Southland? Am I missing out?

I didn’t like it until the second episode, it has a “crash” like gritty feel to it. I like it though and I agree Ben Mc is a very hot looking cop. Regina King is in it, and I just *heart* her!

  2. Todd Says:

Ooh there is someone who can arrest me!!!

  12. Dawn Says:

After the first episode I was hooked. Ben McKenzie and Regina King are so good on this show. There is a large cast with lots of stories going on. My new favorite right now.

  13. Christie Says:

I was surprised that the show is so good! Regina King is amazing and Ben is so hot (and his acting is far better than in the OC).

  14. Lana Says:

I admit that I only began watching the show because of Ben, but I was immediately hooked. It is such a great show! I have never been interested in a cop show (my favorite shows are the following: Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl…), but this show is awesome! WATCH IT!

and omfg at Ben’s hotness. I always look for them filming in WeHo, but no luck yet :[[

  16. saddlebred Says:

Good show, I’ll admit, but Regina King is NOT good. She’s a terrible actress on the show, it’s like watching a high school play. But I can willingly suspend my disbelief enough to ignore her and get into the plot.

  17. Sean Says:

Watch it Trent! This one is good.

  18. Marks Says:

Omg.. wow. I didn’t expect him to be that hot! I may not have liked him before.. but I’m totally in like with him now..

  19. Kent Says:

The only cop show that’s ever really hooked me was The Shield thx to its unrelenting brilliance with character development and storyline progression. That show was king-size, imho.
Southland… I want to watch it because it’s nearly evil how yummy he is in a cop uniform, but so far I’ve just drifted in and out of two episodes – what I saw, though, I liked.

  20. Jadedkitten Says:

Omg you have to it it’s sooooo amazing well the cop are the detectives are kinda of boring last week eppy sucked caused it was all about the detectives.

  21. Ally Says:

    It’s no Wire.

  22. caitlyn Says:

I started watching the show because of Ben, but this show is so good!!! Although, Ben was not in last weeks episode at all… I was pretty bummed =(

  23. SpecialK Says:

The only reason I decided to watch this show is because of Ben!!! The first show I didn’t love, but decided to give it a second chance, the episodes just keep getting better and Regina King is awesome!!

  24. Jennifer Says:

Watch this one Trent it is excellent!!! Ben is hot and Regina King rocks!!! My only quarm with the show is the bleeping out of the cursing but I am getting used to it. I love the grittyness that the show has to it. Glad it will be coming back!

  25. Meg Says:

Like everyone else, I started watching because of Ben but my husband & I LOVE the show! The 1st & 2nd ep were a little slow but now we’re hooked. We’re behind on our DVR and haven’t watched last week’s episode but who’s the gay character on the show? I didn’t realize there was one… maybe it was last week??

  26. Samantha Says:

i wasn’t sure how i felt during the first ep but once i watched the 2nd i loved it! it’s really good and i never even realized that ben’s partner is gay?! hm something new to learn everyday

  27. Angie Says:

I happened to watch the first episode of this show almost on accident, but was instantly hooked! From the start, I was taken by the smart writing, great acting (especially from Regina King!), realistic story lines, interesting characters and grittiness you don’t tend see on network TV. Definitely check this one out, Trent!

  28. Tracy Says:

I absolutely love this show. It is my favorite new series. My hubby and I have completely different tastes when it comes to TV and movies but this is one show we can watch together and enjoy together immensely. You are definitely missing out…WATCH IT!

  29. Meep Says:

To the people reading: John Cooper (played by Micheal Cudlitz) is the gay character. He’s Ben Sherman’s (Mackenzie) patrol partner/senior officer.

The fact that he’s gay is so wholly geniusly revealed in the first ep in the last scene (I don’t want to spoil), but just look closely and you’ll go: ‘Oh!’. I love that they didn’t make a huge deal of it, with a character you ‘usually’ wouldn’t think was gay, and I do hope they’ll expand on it because the character Cooper is my fav on the show (sorry Ben, but once you treat Transvestites as nicely and awesomely as Cooper, you’ll be a close second :D).
