i agree with trent that she shouldn’t be called names, but if she says something that alienates so many people, not just gay people, but people like me who know gay couples and want them to have the same rights and opportunities as i do. i think she needs to take a step back and realize that these pictures would have probably come out eventually and that if she is as religious as she says she is, btw i’m very religious and i still support gay marriage, she should try and be more tolerant of others…

It is all just so sad to me. Society preaches being tolerant of others’ lifestyle choices, yet not many seem to practice that belief. People are entitled to their opinion, and we may not have to like it or agree with it, but we certainly need to show respect for it. The fact that she is being hung out to dry by gay marriage supporters is just wrong. They are not right anymore than she is wrong. And the fact that everyone and their uncle is going through her “dirty laundry” to find ANYTHING that might incriminate her is just pathetic.

“I feel that Carrie Prejean has a right to be a Christian and pose in this manner if it is what she sees fit. It is not anyone’s place to impose their beliefs on her on how to live her life. I just wish she would realize and do the same for others.” Well said.

Yet, I am still inclined to defend Prejean. I am also a Christian (and also imperfect); yet in today’s society, I feel the pressure of not standing up to my beliefs due to fear of being ostracized from the human race. I feel automatically stereotyped as insensitive, or less compassionate. Does it make you less of a human being to take action for what you believe in? Do you deserved to be attacked? Don’t you have the same rights as any other person?

I understand that that’s exactly what the fight about same sex marriage is about — equal rights. I went to the website of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and was disappointed to read that it was founded “in response to the growing need for an organized opposition to same-sex marriage in state legislatures.” While I am ok with the concept of combining state and religion as a personal choice AND right, perhaps the politically (and compassionately) correct goal for NOM should have been ‘encourage opposite-sex marriage’. Because, yes, NOM’s ‘opposing’ CAN be considered a way of imposing beliefs (like you said, Trent).

I am simply asking we not attack Prejean. I am reminded of the movie “Mona Lisa Smile” where Julia Stiles’ character defends her choice to stay as a housewife, despite it being considered as not progressive (for women’s movement). We can be progressive-thinking without having to enjoy bringing people down. God bless.

I hope she loses the crown because she is NOT what I want representing my state. And what’s all this about people trying to bring her down? I wasn’t aware she was FORCED to take these pictures (I heard these are just a taste of what’s to come), nor was she coerced into getting fake titties, so how are people trying to conspire against her? If you judge and make public stances, voicing your opinion about peoples lives, then its fair to be judged back, not to mention that these are not exactly untruthful liable going on! Oh, and it wasn’t mentioned in Trent’s article but as part of her contract for Miss California, she signed that she did NOT have nude or indecent photographs out there and that if she did she COULD lose the crown. Off with her head, er- crown!

I absolutely believe in equality for all…I’ve said that all along but people going on and on about this girl and what she said like its gospel…yeah get a life…its one ignorant opinion. Who cares? She can say and do what she wants…who cares. She doesn’t speak for everyone. Unfortunately life is full of these people and you just have to say so what and move on and fight for what’s right. I can think of a lot more things to get worked up about then one ignorant person. How about all the starving children in the world…or all the homeless people living on the streets. That’s something to get worked up over….not some girl who made a comment.

I never once said in my post that anyone should not have the right to their own opinion. Nor did i get riled up. Notice not even a single exclamation point.
By the way, have you not noticed the irony of stating over and over again that everyone has the right to their own opinion that you are attempting to squash other people’s attempts to voice their opinions by telling us to “get an f’n life”?

I’d also like to state that while I’m not all for getting riled up over Ms. Prejean, the struggle for equal rights for all is certainly something to get riled up about!

JHop you have no idea who or what I believe in. I do want my son to have the same rights but if there are people who don’t believe that then that’s there opinion and its not my belief to force them to see my way. There are just as many people advocating for same sex marriage as there are “traditional marriage”. Frisa, the “double standard” of which you speak is simple: By campaigning against gay marriage, you’re doing more than just voicing an opinion. You’re denying other people, humans, Americans the right to do the same things that other people enjoy every day. It’s more than just having an opinion. It’s actively trying to make it so that other human beings are seen as less than equal in the eyes of the law.

If you have a gay son, you should feel terrible that there are other people in this world that think that he isn’t as good as they are because of who he happens to love.

I have a gay son and I am completely for same sex marriage but not everyone is and that is their right to vote against it. Its called a democracy and there are just as many people advocating legislation for it as there are against it…so why is it okay for one side to advocate for it but not the other? People have a right to speak their minds, but having an opinion is quite different from actively working to change legislation to deny people rights, which is what Ms. Prejean is currently working towards. National Organization for Marriage is an organization that focuses on changing legislation and our laws. I am not saying she can’t voice her opinion, I am saying she shouldn’t try to legislate her opinion.

I don’t like okra, but that doesn’t mean that it is ok for me to change laws to deny other citizens of okra. Even if 90% of people hated okra, that doesn’t mean our Constitution would support the majority legislating that. It isn’t that she doesn’t like gay marriage, it is that she is working to manipulate our laws to take rights away from other people.

I look forward to the day when all people are treated equally… it’s written in our Declaration of Independence, and someday we may get there… almost 250 years and counting…
