‘Lost’: Chain Of Fools

The TV Guide
May 14th, 2009

After my überexciting night out on Tuesday, I decided to kick it at home and take care of some stuff around the house and watch some TV. As pretty much everyone is well aware, the season 5 finale of Lost aired last night and altho I was pretty lukewarm about the show this entire season, I was a bit excited to see how things would be wrapping up this time around. I have to confess, tho, that the 2-hours of “action” that we got last night was far from entertaining … to me. Beware — the rest of this post may contain spoilery info for those of you who have yet to watch the ep:

I’ve long since abandoned the hope that a new “shocking” revelation on Lost would leave me slackjawed and gasping OMGs over and over again. It’s been a long time since that happened to me from watching the show. But I did have some hope that mebbe there would be some new info in last night’s finale that might ignite the spark of excitement again. I must say, there were some really great bits and some surprises but, in the end, I was left with that Why should I care? feeling that has been nagging me all season long. I may be alone on this but I was really unimpressed with Jacob’s entire contribution to the finale. From his intro at the beginning to his death (?) at the end, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes every time he did something. Showing up off the island in the lives of some of the principal characters was … expected … and not at all interesting. I was very surprised to see that Locke’s dead boy was inside that box (I’m still puzzling over where the ghost Locke came from) and I am intrigued by Ilana and her group of unknown characters but, overall, I was just left with that meh feeling. It’s sad that Juliette had to die but even sadder that she had to die cuz a chain flying thru the air wrapped itself around her body sooo tightly that she had to be pulled to her death by electromagnetic forces … well not entirely to her death, she still lived long enough to pound a rock against the H bomb to make the screen go all white. As she was hanging on for dear life (and as those chains unbelievably gripped her body all the while) I was so over it. Bomb or no bomb I had had it. The show used to really entertain me, now it only gives me reason to complain … and that is not fun. I know I’ll continue to watch the show next season only to see how the whole damn thing ends but … now you see why I gave up recapping the show. I know many of you LOVE Lost still and I don’t want to ruin that fun.

After Lost was finished, I started watching The Net starring Sandra Bullock on Cinemax. I just love that movie … I saw it in the theater back in 1995. The Internet was so scary to some back then … little did they know what it would turn into all these years later. About an hour into the movie the power went out … all over West Hollywood. I guess that was my cue to go to bed. I’m gonna have to find The Net on cable again, that movie must be watched in its entirety again … and soon!!

PS: The Detroit Red Wings take on the Anaheim Ducks at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI for Game 7 of their Stanley Cup playoff series. I’m sending all my love to the boys in red to get ‘er done tonight!! Go Wings!!!

Ahh crap. I shouldn’t have read it, but I couldn’t resist. I have the epi PVR’d and haven’t watched it yet. Juliette dies, eh? I guess that leaves the door wide open for Kate.

  2. Brooke Says:

The second Locke was actually the second guy on the Island with Jacob in the first scene. He “found his loophole” to kill Jacob.

  3. sara Says:

I thought LOST was amazing last night

  4. csm Says:

    Go anhiem!

  5. Nathan Aaron Says:

I thought the season finale ROCKED! BUT, I think I get where you’re coming from. It’s hard for me to love this season, because it feels like a great big “connect the dots.” BUT I also think we just spent the last three years being handed shock after shock, confusion, and What the!?’s So now when we’re being given lots of “answers” at a quick pace, it’s blown our whole mystery, and I personally think that might be what’s making this season seem less than spectacular. I’m still dying for the final season, though!

  6. BriK Says:

Trent you HAVE to watch Fringe. It’s very comparable to everything great about Lost. :) The final episode literally left me speechless.

  7. Kim Says:

OMG, this has been a really good season of LOST!!!!

  8. Elkay Says:

I actually really enjoyed this season though I do think it was intended more as a set-up for the final season, so *hopefully* next season will have the OMG factor you’re looking for Trent :)

  9. Corey Says:

I’m a diehard Lost fan, and I LOVED last nights ep… I think it’s all about what you want to see and feel about the episode… if you go in to it already annoyed, you’re bound to dislike the new twists and turns they present

  10. JohnnyJane Says:

I love both season 4 and 5. The show hasn’t been this good since the first season ended. It has become sort of a niche show though as the general public seems to not ‘get’ it as it started to embrace its scifi/fantasy-ness.

  11. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

OH NO! I am going to watch it tonight and see how it is. I love this show but I really want it to be over!! Don’t forget that Real Housewives of NYC is on tonight, part 2! Damn it is good!!!

  12. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@BriK — that is what I’ve heard. I plan to watch the whole season on hulu.com

  13. Emily Says:

Wow – that episode of LOST blew me out of the water, and I would (naively?) assume that it probably even changed the skeptics minds but….I guess not.

  14. EAP Says:

I thought it was an awesome episode and I cannot wait for January.

  15. procrastination101 Says:

loved last nights episode!!! and it’s going to be an agonizing few months until January 2010!!! really sad about juliet :-( she was one of my favorite characters, and i had so many expectations for her and sawyer to end up together when the show finished :-( and i swear if this is a way to let kate back in with sawyer, i’m going to hurt somebody!!! but i kinda get the feeling that jate is fate because of that scene where jack threw in the reactor and jack and kate were looking at each other and sawyer and juliet where looking at each other.

loved last nights episode!!! and it’s going to be an agonizing few months until January 2010!!! really sad about juliet :-( she was one of my favorite characters, and i had so many expectations for her and sawyer to end up together when the show finished :-( and i swear if this is a way to let kate back in with sawyer, i’m going to hurt somebody!!! but i kinda get the feeling that jate is fate because of that scene where jack threw in the reactor and jack and kate were looking at each other and sawyer and juliet where looking at each other. i think that said alot!

  17. procrastination101 Says:

    sorry about the double :-\

  18. Jolene Says:

We had some major weather here in Oklahoma last night so it cut off the last 30 mins of the episode! Thank God for Apple tv though, I’ll be purchasing it when I get off work to finish the episode.

  19. nicole Says:

oh man, last nights lost had my full attention – i loved this season, it was a good set up for next season. i was when juliette died:( i felt bad for swayer. i cant wait for next season!

  20. Shelly Says:

I thought the finale of Lost was great. I didn’t care at all for the sappy part between Sawyer and Juliette, but the whole show was still incredibly entertaining for me to watch.

I’ll be very sad when the show ends after next season.

  21. Aimee Says:

You really didn’t get that the fake Locke was the guy who said he was going to kill Jacob in the beginning of the episode?

  22. Josh Says:

Lost is an awesome show, I thought you were a big sci-fi fan. whatever, yet you act like “the hills” is such a great show. very superficial trent. very superficial. at least Lost makes you think.

  23. Nick Says:

I love Lost, I don’t get your meh. i was on the edge of my seat. Its like a complex puzzle box that keeps getting better and slowly coming together. It uses mythology and sci-fi in amazing ways. It’s better than any of those reality shows on TV.

  24. Lauren Says:

I totally agree with you, Trent.

  25. April Says:

I thought last night’s finale was FABULOUS, and I’ve been impressed with almost every single episode this season. I’ve watched since the first episode, and honestly, I think the show has only gotten amazingly better. (Well, except for that slow start to season 3.)

  26. Kayla Says:

I loved (most) of last night’s episode, loved Jacob. I wasn’t feeling the whole plot with Jack and the bomb but that’s probably because Jack gets on my nerves, as does Juliette and Kate but that’s not the point. But the Jacob parts were amazing, and any scene with Sawyer because I love him.

  27. Lily Says:

Trent, I completely agree. I loved the changing of the logo thing, that was great, but the whole episode I was just like..well…OK, so? Apart from fake-Locke, nothing else was really season-finale worthy.

They’ve got me for one more year though. I sincerely hope they do a good job of wrapping it all up.

  28. Sarah Says:

I think Juliette died for the sake of Sawyer/Kate, did you see the way he was looking at Kate the entire episode? Especially when Bernard was talking about having someone to die with or whatever. It was then that Juliette became hellbent for setting off the bomb, and I think it’s so she wouldn’t ever meet Sawyer, and therefore get her heart broken by him. You’ll also notice that Sawyer was calm when talking to Jack until Jack mentioned something about never meeting Kate if they didn’t end up on the island, and then Sawyer started their little brawl. I think Sawyer loved Juliette because opportunity was knocking for him to get together with Juliette (Kate was gone), the minute Kate got back to the island, everything changed. Sawyer even said as much at the beginning. I liked the finale, i haven’t watched lost all season (been reading some recaps, keeping up) but I tuned in last night just to see an update, and am ready for next season. Glad Juliette is gone, as she got on my nerves.

  29. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Josh — I’m not sure what you’re talking about, I’ve voiced my displeasure for The Hills many, many times. I’m only happy that Kristin Cavallari is joining the cast. I’m not sure what superficiality has to do with taste in TV shows but you seem pretty angry that I don’t like Lost. As long as you like Lost, isn’t that all that matters?

  30. agnet_o Says:

i think part of the problem is they’re answering a lot of past storylines in a half season instead of a full season. it’s a lot to take in at a quick pace and if you miss one episode that throws the continuity.

hope i’m not spoiling it for those that have not seen it yet, but “Ghost Locke” was the dark-haired guy talking to Jacob on the beach at the start of the episode. how he was able to occupy Locke’s body….that’s another question.

i personally loved this season and was gratefully to finally be able to go, “Oh! That’s why such and such happened two seasons ago.” super excited for next years last season.

  31. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@agnet_o — “’Ghost Locke’ was the dark-haired guy talking to Jacob on the beach at the start of the episode” whoa! I didn’t know that. now that is interesting, too. the whole Locke is dead thing was the best part of the whole finale. thanks for the info!!

  32. iamjoeybradley Says:

couldn’t disagree with you more, Trent!

  33. Verodemort Says:

Trent, I don’t think you are really paying attention enough to enjoy this season, which IMO has been the most amazing. There are a lot of things going on that most people don’t even catch (like that nameless man really being Locke) and the theories are so awesome that I can’t believe you aren’t in love with this season!! Doc Jenson on EW.com is a great blog to follow to both get insider hints and have plot points explained, as well as throwing around theories. Seriously, read it!!! <3

  34. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Verodemort — i’ve read enough, believe me. this whole season has been “we have to get off the island” then “we have to get back to the island” then “we have to go back in time” then “we have to go forward in time” … then a bomb. pfft. i can’t be arsed anymore.

  35. anna Says:

what are you doing to my fragile heart Trent? This and no Gossip Girl Flashback Recap… you hyped the whole thing up and no recap?

  36. kellye Says:

I’m not sure I understand the point of this post. So you didn’t like it. Fine, you’re entitled to your opinion. But why stir the shit pot? And why stop with Lost? Let’s start talking about how lame Twilight is and a whole new set of crazies will come out.

  37. Bleeding Ears Says:

LOL@ Kellye…. I second the statement about Twilight

Last nights episode was quite AWESOME. If you do your research into the themes within LOST your world would have been rocked last night. This is one of the most intelligent shows I’ve ever watched. It’s like one of those Magic Eye pictures – you need to give it careful attention and have patience and if you’re willing to ‘take a leap of faith’ you’ll be beyond entertained. I cannot wait for season 6….
    “THEY ARE COMING”

  38. Laura Says:

I needed a smoke break with 15min left when juliet was pulled down, didn’t think she was going to make it. Wanted her dead from day one, but regretted that when the chains took her.

Season 5 was not only a snooze fest but too big of a change, from sawyer in charge instead of jack and john all holy-thou…although now we know why.

but the finale was AMAZING! Still dont get the statue, glad to see rose and bernard retired, oh and jacob’s hott.

  39. iamjoeybradley Says:

You’re either a fan of LOST- or you’re not. Some people just don’t get it or they don’t get where it’s going. There are those of us who see the beauty behind the J.J Abrams of the world – and the talented writers of LOST. Other people are content w/ simpler entertainment. Being a fan of Lost is a bigger commitment to TV than some people want to make.

  40. meg Says:

i thought the part with jacob doing the weaving thing set up why he met with various Losties/Ajira folk. i remember something about greek mythology (though the movie ‘Wanted’ explains this much better), that each strand represented a person’s fate. the fact that jacob himself was personally weaving implied he wanted to bring them all together for a bigger picture/purpose.

IMO, this season is all about rewarding faithful Lost viewers. the finale had a lot of shout-outs from previous seasons (like the DriveShaft ring), and the whole season had one common theme: the past. in fact, Lost has been pretty good at having a theme for each episode (season1: landing on the island, 2: hatch, 3: err… the first half was bad, but i think it was to set up for season5 events, 4: the main land, 5: the past).

the only really annoying thing about lost is jack’s character. he should be the one to blame for the whole “let’s get out of the island” — “we have to get back”, — “we have to do this and that” :P ah, very wishy-washy he is.

  41. meg Says:

my bad. i meant Lost has been good at tying a theme for each SEASON, not episode.

  42. mark Says:

I think Jacob’s rival seen at the start of the episode is the Smoke Monster. We’ve seen throughtout the show plenty of dead people appear on the island, there has been strong hints that the Monster is behind this e.g. Eko’s brother appearing to him just before the Monster kills him.

Therefore, I believe that the un-named man lead Locke to his death, then took his form, in order to manipulate a chain of events that would lead to Jacob’s death. First, he appeared as Christian Shepard, who told Locke to move the Island and to bring the others back to save it. This lead to Locke’s death at the hands of Ben, who was fuelled by jealousy. Now back on the island, deceased, the Monster/un-named man is able to take his form.

He then sets the course of events into action by getting Richard to tell the living Locke from the past the he must save everyone by dying, appearing as Ben’s daughter Alex who tells her father him he must follow Locke’s orders, or else, and finaly convincing Ben to kill Jacob, thus finding a loophole to achieve his goal.

  43. Bleeding Ears Says:

This will explain things for those who are frustrated:

  44. RACHEL Says:

I have also watched Lost from the beginning and yes its starting to piss me off too. Just like the Hills you only see it going downhill and just have to watch only to know what and why…Man wheres all the good shows at?

  45. Chimera Says:

    Where the hell is Clare?!

  46. Ally Says:

I respect anyone’s decision to not like a show b/c I can’t stand 24, I just don’t find it entertaining at all. It kind of reminds me of a soap opera how they cut every few minutes when anything romotely exciting happens and then slightly recap when it comes back from commercial. So, it’s cool if LOST isn’t your thing. But for me, it is the best show on TV with no exception. No other show gets me to actually think once it has left my screen. I think it is a show that you have to be really invested in to truely enjoy. Also, I agree with the other poster, you definitely need to watch Fringe (Walter is awesome).

  47. Kendra Says:

@kellye – What’s the point of this post? The point is that this is Trent’s blog and he writes about what’s going on with him..He watched the finale and wanted to comment on it..Why are people getting their panties all in a bunch over Trent’s opinion?

  48. Kendra Says:

P.S. Even though I wasn’t blown away by the finale, the thought of waiting until next year to see the next season crushes me! It’s almost as bad as having to wait for Season 4 of Dexter!!

  49. J Says:

    Trennntt, worse review ever.
How could you possibly watch Lost at just face value, are you not paying attention at all to the intricate details they are slowly revealing? Obviously not. If you focus on the going to the island, leaving the island stuff and thats it (as per what you said you’re bored with) you’re obviously not paying enough attention. Thought your viewing tastes were better than that!

  50. Alex Says:

Opinios are like assholes, everybody’S got one, still ur asshole is wrong

  51. Libby Says:

Lost is my absolute favourite show. I understand where you’re coming from–it can be very hard to follow and a little difficult to understand. It takes a lot of patience and you definitely have to pay really close attention to catch every detail, but I think it pays off.

Personally, I really enjoyed the season finale. Locke’s dead body and the Locke-impersonator was the greatest part, in my opinion.

But I have a feeling everything that has happened isn’t at all how it seems. I feel like the writers are leaving the best for last, and are going to pull out all the stops next season. I really hope it ends well, because I’ve loved the show so far!
