Jessica Simpson Does ‘Vanity Fair’ Magazine

"The Jessica Question"? Who's asking?
May 4th, 2009

Jessica Simpson is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Vanity Fair magazine. Unfortch for her, the cover is prolly the fuglist one that the magazine has ever published … ever. The fugness has nothing really do with Jessica Simpson herself (tho, I should confess that I don’t really like the picture of her that was chosen for the cover) and everything to do with the horrible, jumbled use of texts and graphics. It looks like a total confusing mess. Here is Jessica on the cover of the June issue of Vanity Fair along with a portion of her coverstory interview (which was shared by her Dallas Cowboys beau Tony Romo):

Having professed her love for Tony Romo – whom she’s been dating since Thanksgiving 2007 – Jessica Simpson now has the Dallas Cowboys quarterback speaking up about her. “We’re very similar in that we both appreciate the hometown feel to a lot of things, and live our life like that,” Romo, described as “big, easy, handsome,” tells the June issue of Vanity Fair (on sale in New York and Los Angeles May 6 and nationally May 12). “She comes to a ton of games,” he says. “She’s a supportive girlfriend.” Not that this has been unanimously viewed as an advantage. In what at the time was perceived as a curse – and, as Vanity Fair’s Rich Cohen points out, in Texas where the Cowboys are a religion, Simpson’s dating Romo is like she’s dating the Pope – the couple vacationed in Mexico before the Cowboys lost to the New York Giants in the 2008 NFL playoffs. The Giants, meanwhile, went on to win the Super Bowl. According to Romo, 29, between games, “A lot of people head to Vegas, go back to their hometowns, colleges, and stuff. I was just like, ‘Let’s rent a house and sit around and watch football.’ It seemed like a good decision. But when you’re in the public eye, things can be perceived differently.” He adds, “You know, it’s very hard when you lose, because games are important, and so many people put so much time and effort in. It’s nice to have someone to come home to and try and make you feel better.” Simpson, 28, concurs. “That’s how the story goes,” she says. “Can’t help it. But we don’t let it affect our relationship. If we did, we wouldn’t be together, because it happened at the very beginning. Dating the Cowboys quarterback comes with hype, the fans, the bloggers, but I’ve never dated a guy that was more simple. I’m always there for him after a game, and he knows he has me to come home to.” Home is definitely an important refuge, because, as the profile also chronicles, life isn’t always easy for Simpson. Her “sudden weight gain,” though apparently now under control, left her looking “less than slender,” the magazine reports. Then there are her professional highs and lows, which include a not particularly enviable movie box-office record and a musical identity that is anything but constant, prompting Sony Music head Tommy Mottola to say, “I think she absolutely needs to re-invent herself.” At the same time, Mottola (who signed Simpson to her first label, in 1997), warns Simpson against flip-flopping between pop, Christian rock and country music – and thereby confusing her audience. In the face of such challenges, Simpson, underscoring her spiritual self, says, “We all go through trials, but not one thing has ever made me question God. I have a great relationship with God. I can talk to him, get mad at him, frustrated with him. But, ultimately, my faith is what defines me.” Besides, she adds, “There will always be another opportunity, another door to walk through.”

Ugh, the cover is really bad … but good for her for scoring the VF cover in the first place. She really doesn’t have anything of interest to talk about with the mag. I guess I’m not entirely sure why she got the cover in the first place … she’s got no new movies on the horizon (nor any old movies worth talking about) and no new album about to be released (she actually just got let go from her Country music label) … AND it’s not even football season to make Romo’s participation in the interview relevant. The entire feel of her VF coverpiece is focused on her apparent shortcomings and setbacks. Is any of this really worthy of a magazine cover? Surely the magazine, at the very least, published a stunning photoshoot to offset the lackluster interview … right? After the jump, check out a few photos from Jessica Simpson’s Vanity Fair photospread and judge for yourself …

Snoozeville. I have to say that I am very surprised that Vanity Fair magazine would devote so much coverage to someone who really doesn’t have anything going on right now. No offense to Jessica but what about her life right now is coverstory worthy? If you are at all interested, you can read Jessica’s VF interview online HERE … mebbe you’ll find something of value in there. I couldn’t find anything worth writing home about. The whole thing is just … meh.

I really couldn’t agree more with you, Trent. I always associated VF with covering people who are contributing to something. The interview choice in itself is sad. The cover is far too bright and unflattering and looks like a mess. It looks like a trashy magazine cover.

  2. CB Says:

I dunno… I’m pretty conflicted about this decision by Vanity Fair. Maybe they just ran out of ideas.
Who is out there right now to interview who also hasn’t been interviewed by everyone and their momma?
There is only so much Michelle Obama we can take! :)

Despite the unpopularity of the following statement, I stand by it. Jessica Simpson *is* beautiful.

  3. kittycatastrophe Says:

Look, if she got the cover of Vanity Fair then everyone should be given a chance for the cover. I’d like to put a bid in for my birthday next year. I’m not famous, I don’t have anything all that important to say…but I’m cute, in shape and could easily pass for 10-15 years younger than I am…since youthfulness is important and all. I do not, however, have big boobies which may hold me back some.

  4. katt Says:

i think she looks really pretty in the pictures though!

  5. troyS Says:

Good luck, Kittycatastrophe–you make a good point!

There has to be some fix behind this. Like Graydon Carter owes a big favor or gave one in exchange for a big exclusive in the coming months. Otherwise, this is completely insupportable. When I saw “Jess does VF” I thought it can’t be AMERICAN Vanity Fair.

  6. sp Says:

i don’t think there’s anything wrong with the cover of VF..but Jessica Simpson does look fugly as always. go away already J.S, no one cares about you and your complete lack of talent/brains!!!

  7. Dots Says:

I think she looks great on the cover and in all the pictures.

  8. nicole Says:

i think the pics look pretty good…

  9. Chase Says:

I think everyone is deeply exaggerating about the pictures. They look fine but could be a little better. I do agree with Trent on how they chose her when she doesn’t have anything significant coming out. I mean, they refuse to let Britney be on the cover (because they said she’s not a Vanity Fair type of a gal) but they let JSimp? HMMM

  10. Bob Says:

Is this a new thing Celebrity’s getting covers for careers hitting rock bottom??At least she has her shoe line maybe the cover will sell a few more shoes poor Jessica.

  11. kittycatastrophe Says:

Ooops. I take back everything I said about Jessica being on the cover of Vanity Fair. I went through my personal blog and realized that I canceled my subscription to the Vanity Fair after they put Paris Hilton on the cover back in 2005. Jessica Simpson has it all over Paris Hilton, which isn’t saying a whole hell of a lot, but there ya go.

  12. Heather Says:

I think she does have something about her that people are interested in. Her choice in music and films are really horrible and it’s sad because I think she’s got a great voice and she’s really beautiful. She can’t act, so I don’t even know why she tries. I think a lot of this is a direct result in poor management, i.e. (her dad). If she got the right people behind her, I think she could be back on top. P.S. her clothing line IS really cute, so she does know a thing or two about cute clothes and accessories. Oh and she knows a thing or two about guys, minus John Mayer! That was one of the worst choices ranking right up there with going country!

  13. Carolyn Says:

You are right about the cover Trent. It’s a smorgasbord of terrible graphic design. Every time I look at it to say “well, the _____ isn’t half bad”, I find something else that makes me flinch. Jessica looks pretty enough, but even the lighting on the photo is poorly executed. sigh.

  14. Blair Says:

Vanity fair put Jessica Simpson on the cover because they knew it would get publicity and be talked about, and it worked. They are all about selling their brand and she has had alot of press attention recently.

  15. Lisa Says:

If it’s ok that Lindsay Lohan gets magazine covers then it should be ok for Jessica Simpson too.
At least Jessica is not a train wreck/terrible role model.

  16. la princesa Says:

This may explain her “I love my dad” tweets…he got this for her when she has nothing to discuss.
    Can’t stand the girl. Snooze!!

  17. ~Roni~ Says:

Awe…I feel so bad for Jessica. Everybody is always so mean to her. I think she is gorgeous…however the cover pic is pretty heinous considering when I first looked at it I was like “where is her freakin neck” then I realized, bad lighting. They pay these photographers bookoos of money, they could have at least made sure they had good lighting. I love her. I don’t care what anybody else says! Even if she does put on 20-40 lbs she’s still hot! Oh and btw, the pic of her in the robe and the face shot…are fabulosa! ***I LOVE YOU TRENT!!!!***

  18. TandSara Says:

Heather , she “used” to have a great voice, somewhere between her first album and now she started singing in a new incredibly horrible style ( go listen to her and lachey sing ” baby it’s cold outside” and dare your ears not to bleed buckets). In all seriousness, Jessica’s dad is alot like matthew knowles , he is able to throw his weight around hollywood and chances are he got her this cover, Vanity fair is kind of stupid, they are always trying to be vogue and falling short. They don’t have the magnitude, clout or substance they once had, they are getting desperate in today’s market and it’s made more obvious by this interview and cover choice( a few years ago Jessica was even voted by another popular blogger on his show as the most irrelevant celeb and she still would be if she hadn’t found the fortune of dating Tony, trust me that was also arranged by her father to save her although Im sure the relationship is real, ). Almost everything you see her do is orchestrated by her father, even her divorce from nick, her father has to have the control and he gets his way, he makes sure of that, especially with Jessica, Jessica really is a Simpleton, and not as smart as her sister so it’s easy for her life to be this way. Remember on newlyweds when they said she’d never done anything for herself, she was already like 25 at the time, what does that tell you about her, she wasn’t just catered to, she is as stupid as John Mayer said she was. That’s not me being mean or a hater, it’s just something that is KNOWN about her in hollywood. She’s obviously harmless, what’s really the most sad is that she’s not even a dumb nice girl, she’s actually a spoiled brat, so really all she has is her beauty and she lucks out and finds men that want to protect and teach her. Saying Jessica is stupid is the same as saying MJ had plastic surgery.

Im not hating on her, she has a decent career, makes decent money, has made some smartish business decisions and is definitely pretty, but Im just saying it like it is, telling the truth, everybody knows this stuff about her, except maybe her fans b/c fans tend to be in denial about their objects of affection. Sadly she’s the dumbest of the pop girls from the late 90’s Mandy is the smartest.

  19. Monica Says:

I’m sorry but those photos are pretty horrific. That last photograph looks likes he is experiencing a horrible cramp or gas pain. If those were the best they had I can only imagine what made the cutting room floor.

Lisa I would rather see Lindsay on covers because she is at least contributing to the gossip sites with her daily antics. Jessica *yawn*

  20. Monica Says:

Blair where is this press attention? Last I heard about her was the end of football season.

  21. Tracy Says:

Why is she famous? What in the world has she done that is worth anything? Blah.

  22. Mr. Avenjer Says:

Like it or not, this cover works, here’s why—It looks nothing like the same old celebrity cover we see each and every month. It stands out. All the news outlets today (including this one) are talking about this interveiw and this cover. Don’t believe me? Go to USA today, the British SUN, even friggin’ Foxnews. And I think on this cover (which was purposely retro styled) she looks a little like Grace Kelly or Ursula Andress which is not a bad thing. And inside she reminds me of Raquel Welch. Could the photos be a little better—sure, but I think these present her in a much more interesting way then another Daisy Duke or Maxim styled photo shoot—which I’ve seen enough of—unless they’re going to start putting men on the cover that way. :)

  23. Amy P. Says:

I love the pictures! I wish more people would support Jessica Simpson! She is very talented, incredibly down to earth, and gorgeous!!!

  24. J Says:

Is she like.. having one of those “that feels so good squeezing that turd out” in the last picture.

  25. iamjoeybradley Says:

Trent, you’re smoking crack or somethin cause i think she looks great in this! – really great!

  26. Jadedkitten Says:

Why is she on the cover of vanity fair?

@ chase that was vogue not VF

  27. Kendra Says:

Personally, I don’t mind the cover shot..And is it just me, or does she look like a white version of Eva Mendes in the close up face shot? I’m not a fan or anything, but I don’t mind the girl..

  28. Theresa Says:

I totally thought it read ‘cleavage’ and not ‘coverage’ !!! LOL

  29. *T Says:

I think she’s inherently likable and most people want to her succeed. A friend who served in Afghanistan said she flew over there and gave a knock-out performance. I like her just for doing that.

(The two pictures of her in the black dress though are the worst.)

  30. JessicaGiovanna Says:

    Mr. Averjen; I agree 100%
I think it really stand out amongst the other mags w/ rhe airbrushed hair flying everywhere looks. VF is running a business that needs to sell mags, they acheived that by putting such a polarizing subject on the cover and this picture that grabs your eye w/ the sharp contrasts of color. Well played VF.

  31. may Says:

cut her some slack, there’s no reason NOT to like it. i think she likes pretty in these pictures!

  32. Nicole Says:

I like the cover a lot. Jessica might not be the right choice for a VF spread (article & Q/A), but she looks beautiful. Love the colors-fresh and clean.
She is one of the most physically beautiful women of her generation. I am always in awe by her looks.

  33. Tina Says:

Jessica looks fantastic. She’s a beautiful and talented young lady, and I enjoy seeing and hearing her. People who criticize her…………jealous???? Childish???

  34. jamii Says:

Wow…people are sooo bitter. I myself like Jessica Simpson as a person. She is funny in interviews I see and very kind it seems. I have seen two straight to dvd movies of hers and to be honest I laughed more at those two movies than any other big screen comedy hit in years, check out Major Movie Star DVD or Blonde Ambition, she was fantastic in both of those movies. As for the VF cover she as always looks amazing! Stop hating people. I must say this website is getting as catty and immature as perez hiltons followers. Grown up and show some class people.

  35. meh Says:

I totally agree about the graphic layout for the cover & thought the photo was a poor choice– until I saw the other photos. The cover photo is genius compared to those other shots. She’s a very pretty girl, but she CAN NOT model for a photo. There is absolutely nothing coming through that lens. I’m surprised the photographer & VF would even settle for this. It’s a sad choice for her in this industry: she doesn’t know how to sing, can’t pick movies (maybe she can act–I haven’t watched her movies), she’s photogenic but can’t BRING IT… She’s needs to quit the industry & find something else that motivates & inspires her. It’s a waste for everybody. I remember seeing her sing, early on before she “hit?”, live on the Latin Grammys (???) & it was PAINFUL. Way off pitch, screaming like she was some MariahCarey. In retrospect I wonder, “Who did Daddy blow to get her on that show?” Good looks can open a lot of doors. After that it’s up to you, Miss Jess.

  36. JeY-JaY Says:

I’m as big a Jessica Simpson fan as any straight guy could be and I gotta say the pictures just reminded me of how tired I am right now……

  37. Monica Says:

Yes having her on the cover has people talking. Well at least on this blog because I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned anywhere else. Doesn’t mean she can sell a magazine especially when she can’t even sell a cd.
