First Look: ‘The Vampire Diaries’
Earlier today we got our first look at the new version of Melrose Place which will air this coming Fall on The CW and now we get our first look at another CW series scheduled to debut as well. The Vampire Diaries is the TV adaptation of the L.J. Smith book series of the same name. Here are a few promo pics from the new series which features two vampire brothers (one good, one bad) who are each vying for the affections of a human girl caught in between:

“Vampire Diaries” is an adaptation of L.J. Smith’s novel series which tells about two vampire brothers, one good and one evil, fighting the passion for the same girl, Elena. Nina Dobrev will play Elena while the good brother, Stefan, will be played by Paul Wesley. The evil brother, Damon is played by Ian Somerhalder. It airs Thursdays at 8 P.M. before “Supernatural”.
I have not personally read these books but I’ve heard from many people that the series is very good and the TV adaptation is just as good. Vampires are really hot right now … it doesn’t surprise me that The CW would want to jump on the bandwagon and bring another vampire tale to the masses. The fact that Ian Somerhalder is cast as the bad vamp brother intrigues me to no end. I never really pictured him as a bad guy … in Buffy terms, I guess he would be the Spike to Paul Wesley’s Angel (while Spike and Angel are not brothers, they are vampire family and did vie for Buffy’s affections). This is deffo one of the new series I am looking forward to seeing come Fall. Ian Somerhalder on my TV screen? Yes, please. And you thought vampires couldn’t get any hotter.

I am definitely considering reading the series! I heard that they’re pretty good as well! I’m kind of excited and I don’t know anything about it! : )

I LOVE these books – most of them are out of print but they’re definitly worth the read. She’s written dozens of great vampire books to get lost in.

oh this looks interesting… hmm will have to look into getting the books first… oh but i do like the cast… all the degrassi stars are comming outta the woodwork suddenly lol

Is there anyone left at Degrassi? The CW keeps taking its actresses!

The books aren’t her best work to be honest. ‘The Secret Circle’ and the Night World books are so much more fascinating! The Night World series would make an excellent show! Btw, Elena is supposed to be blond and blue-eyed, but I guess that’d make it too similar to Buffy.

Is it just me, or does it look like a huge age gap between Elena and the brothers.
May 21st, 2009 at 2:45 pm
YES! Nina Dobrev was on Degrassi. But I’d watch for Ian Somerhalder alone
May 21st, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I will watch this. I’m a vampire addict.

anybody remember the forbidden game trilogy – that was my favourite l.j. smith trilogy growing up – might have to pick up the vampire diaries now since i never read it – i guess that explains why it was reissued this year, and not the forbidden game!!

@Trent um.. don’t you mean David Boreanaz’s Angel? And you call yourself a Buffy fan… tsk tsk
May 21st, 2009 at 3:54 pm
@Trent haha disregard my last comment. i get what you were saying.

I think this show looks horrible.

I’ve heard good things about the book series as well, and I dig vamp stuff, so I’m definitely interested. Plus, I’ve loved Paul Wesley since way back when he was playing a wolf on Wolf Lake :). And I gotta support the Degrassi alums. AND I gotta support Ian Somerhalder since I’ve been a fan of his since way back when he was on Young Americans hehe. Man I watch too much tv…

Ok that girl looks 15 and the guys look 30.

Psh. TrueBlood is seriously the only real vampire material on television.

NOOO ELENA IS SUPPOSED TO BE BLOND. UGH.
May 21st, 2009 at 7:22 pm
@Liz- yes this is the girl from degrassi; the cw does seem to love the degrassi actors. hopefully this will be good; hopefully better than the “twilight” series’.

@ksant, the forbidden game trilogy was my favorite too! i’m hoping they reissue those too cos i’ve lost my copies. lol.
and i know it shouldnt matter, but elena’s dark hair is bothering me. lol. i always liked the contrast between her and the brothers :)

Is it just me or does Ian Somerhalder look A LOT like Rob Lowe in that poster?! He could be his twin!! And if he’s playing the evil brother well then I may just have to switch on over to the dark side :)

Argh excitement! I live in New Zealand so it will probably be another ten years before we get this show but I am definitely looking forward to it! I read all her books about 10 years ago (Night World, Secret Circle, Forbidden Game and this). My best friend and I had imaginary boyfriends we told everyone about based on characters in one of the books (Nick and Adam I think?) – which is epically lame, but bear in mind we were 11!!

Elena is bloooooooooooooond… But I digress…. They had me at Ian. ;)
May 21st, 2009 at 10:21 pm
@Lisa-Well, I think that’s fitting since she’s supposed to be a teenager or whatever and they’re vampires who’ve been around for a while lol. For the record though, the actor on the left is 30, the girl is 20, and the other guy is 26.

Have you ever seen Rules of Attraction??
Ian Somerhalder was pretty hot in that one.
May 22nd, 2009 at 4:46 am
If they can’t even get her hair colour right, what else are they going to screw up?!! I love this series, so I’ll give it a chance but it better be damn good!
May 22nd, 2009 at 5:47 am
I just don’t know if I can get passed the age difference. The boys are so much older that it will be super creepy to watch them “vie for her affections”…
May 22nd, 2009 at 5:48 am
Ooo and Ian played a bad guy of sorts (more like a sick guy just trying to stay alive) on Smallville a few years ago.
May 22nd, 2009 at 6:35 am
While no one can top Angel for me, I am super excited to see this series. Thursdays are going to be the shit this fall!
May 22nd, 2009 at 7:05 am
@Michelle You are right about the Rob Lowe thing. That was my first response as well! God Ian is SO hot. BOONE!!!
May 22nd, 2009 at 8:49 am
Now I’m intrigued about these books. Will definitely grab some the next time I venture into the bookstores. Hope we have copies here.
May 22nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
