‘Entertainment Weekly’ Chooses Their American Idol
Now that this season’s American Idol competition is down to the top 3 finalists (after last night’s elimination), the battle to become the new American Idol is getting down to the wire … tho, Entertainment Weekly magazine seems to think that the competition is already a done deal. They don’t come out and declare a winner, per se, but by singling out one of this season’s contestants and putting HIM on the cover of their magazine they seem to be making a clear statement. It’s as if EW is saying, Here is your new American Idol … Adam Lambert:

Yes, pretty much everyone on the planet seems to think that Adam Lambert has got the title in the bag but I don’t know that any publication has made this sort of determination so early before a winner is selected. EW even mentions that fact that Adam “might be gay” on their cover which, it seems to me, appears to be the footnote anytime anyone talks about Adam’s possible win as the new American Idol. I don’t even watch the show but I’m aware of all the lurve that Adam is getting from everyone … it just seems kinda shitty to the other contestants that he is being singled out by a mag like EW before the competition is even over. In any event, I’m sure Mr. Lambert will benefit greatly from this bit of major press … not that he needs it. I understand that he is the most exciting, most charismatic AI contestant to come along in years. I guess we’ll see if his reputation can live up to the hype when the new American Idol is crowned in a couple of weeks. What do y’all think … do YOU think Adam Lambert has the competition in the bag?

I thought he had it in the bag until last week when he was in the bottom two. So who knows. Allison was the best by far this week and she was kicked off.
Danny is my fave. :)
May 7th, 2009 at 9:06 am
I don’t know…I think it will be too hard to tell. Allison went home and Kris stayed, who was def. the weakest this week. I think EW is being a little presumptuous….
May 7th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Personally, I think he should win..But I almost feel like all of this attention is going to backfire..In a way, he might be better off if he doesn’t win so he can do his own kind of record, and not have to answer to the AI powers that be..He is definitely the most creative contestant I’ve ever seen on the show..He’s really fun to watch..Not that I watch that lame show or anything..*ahem*
May 7th, 2009 at 9:09 am
It’s true that he is the most exciting, charismatic singer on AI in years. He definitely deserves to win, even with his strong competition.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Adam is a risk taker on the show & I think he may win, or like the above comment by Kendra, maybe he will be better off if he doesn’t win, then can do his own thing. I do not think Alison should have been voted off last night based on singing performance Tuesday night, Danny should have, he didn’t sing well. But apparently he has more fans & is very likable. Not my favorite though.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Hmmm, don’t know. I personally don’t like him, though I must admit that he knows how to use his tool (as a singer, I mean…), but I feel he lacks authenticity and (for want of a better word) sincerety.
I do find some of his performances too cringeworthy to watch/listen to (even find myself flipping channels at certain times) though I cannot deny that there have been others where he’s been sublime. For me, he’s a bit too theatrical for comfort – and I’m not sure how well this theatricality would translate into recordings (the ultimate purpose of AI being to find/create a major recording artist).
Anyway, regardless of what everybody says about this year, I find myself quite uninvolved with the proceedings. So I don’t have strong feelings about any of the contestants and I don’t mind if he wins, but I certainly won’t be rooting for him…
May 7th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Obviously, he should win. He’s in a completely different league than the other singers vocally, performance-wise, charmismatically, and is the only one left (and, in my opinion, the only contestant this season) who has an undeniable je-ne-sais-quoi about him, or that so-called “X factor”. His song choices have been consistently great as they showcase his unique and awesome taste in music. He’s also very lovable, not arrogant at all, and is clearly just enjoying himself and striving to deliver as best he can. I hate that so much emphasis is put on his sexuality when it is the least relevant aspect to his fantastic talent. No one sees it fit to write “Danny Gokey, who is rumoured to be straight, performed so-and-so last night”…. get over it people, it’s 2009, why is it news-worthy that someone is gay?
In any case, I could see Gokey snatching a win because he’s a non-threatening douche-bag and America seems to LOVE ‘em some of those (AHEM Taylor Hicks AHEM).
May 7th, 2009 at 9:24 am
booo that allison got booted! it sooooo should have been danny or kris! i would have loved to have seen Danny goo… Adam is good and all but i honestly think he sounds the same in sooo many of his songs that he has done… but i’d much rather see him win over the other 2
May 7th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I think it’s funny bc if you read Michael Slezak’s Idol recaps or watch his Idolatry videos, they are all about Allison and, to a lesser degree, Kris, and he just recently hopped somewhat half-heartedly on the Adam bandwagon.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:30 am
my only issue with Adam is that he does the same exact “unique different” thing every single week. it can’t be THAT different if you did the same thing 7 days ago, you know? lol
May 7th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Adam has surpassed American Idol in every way. He doesn’t need the win but it would be amazing. I hope it’s Adam & Kris in the final 2. Their style is most likely what I’d be interested in listening to. However, out of the three left, i hear Hicks, err i mean Gokey singing that super cheesy inspirational ballad. Here’s to hoping that Idol chooses a winning single that’s not about riding rainbows and bathing in a pool of puppies. Team Adam!
May 7th, 2009 at 9:34 am
loved allison….so sad to see her go. agree w/steve on adam…same thing every week.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Hes def Gay!
May 7th, 2009 at 9:42 am
Blah, he wails a little too often for my taste. Really, he’s got two modes, IMO: screaming hair band frontman and tender falsetto. I don’t think I could listen to a whole CD of either one, or even both. I’m over his David Coverdale/Robert Plant sound.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:42 am
What I think is refreshing is that Mr. Lambert being gay or not is just a footnote. How long we have come as a society that a person’s character or talent is more important then who or whom they sleep with.
Iowa is showing America that the Midwest is ready to let American’s live a happy, open and honest life.(New England has already been ahead of the curve). The South, as is their history will get around to it in the year 2200.
Mr. Lambert is a talent that deserves the attention he is getting. It is too bad that some out-of-date radio shows are saying he doesn’t represent America. The politics of hate and fear has been exposed and America has moved forwards. You go Adam.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:45 am
I think Adam can sing but when he screaches it’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I see him as more broadway than mainstream music. I was a Matt fan but now I’m voting for Kris.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:48 am
They really couldn’t wait a few more weeks to put him on the cover? Even if they did it if he *gasp* lost. Pretty rude to the other two. I haven’t been watching it that much this season, but his screachy way of singing is just not my cup of tea. I can’t say I really care who wins this one.
May 7th, 2009 at 9:52 am
I like all of the contestants, but the thing is, Adam’s consistently awesome, which yeah, means he probably deserves to win, but I like to root for the under dog. I was really hoping to see Allison make it further, but oh well.
I’d love to see Kris sneak up and take the title.
I remember last year, everybody was so sure David A. had it in the bag, and then David C. won, which made me happier than a pig in you-know-what. LOL
May 7th, 2009 at 10:00 am
I think Adam is really talented, but I think he’s soooo destined for Broadway that he’d benefit from being eliminated now so he could go where he obviously belongs. He’s definitely *NOT* my favourite contestant, but if you recall from other seasons, the “runners up” often do better than the actual winner (see seasons of Ruben, Fantasia, Taylor Hicks, etc). Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, etc have gone on to have FANTASTIC careers and they came in 4th or something!! Send Adam home so he can have a stellar career – he doesn’t need the title of “IDOL” to make it… he’s already made it.
I love Danny Gokey despite all the haters, and my ideal Top 2 would be Danny & Adam… Kris is good, but he’s not really, again, Idol material. He’d do well without the title.
May 7th, 2009 at 10:03 am
In reference to a comment made by a “STEVE” earlier…
I COMPLETELY AGREE! Adam’s looks (both physical and literal) are the SAME EVERY WEEK. It’s not “original” if he does it every Tuesday & Wednesday night! I mean, they are original in comparison to the other contestants, but he is very much a one trick pony… not to take away from the fact that he is definitely “UNIQUE”, as Adam is by far more interesting… but I guess the only way I can explain it is that he doesn’t appear to be “EVOLVING”… he’s a stagnant character…
May 7th, 2009 at 10:08 am
He definately has it in the bag. He’s by FAR the most talented.
May 7th, 2009 at 10:29 am
I would actually be happy with any of the top 3 winning, so this is a win win for me. I don’t think they should have gone as far as basically declaring him the winner though. I think it is kinda shitty, but well, I guess welcome to show business! I do worry that Adam might turn out to be a Taylor Hicks winner. I’m not sure. But either way, I hope he is very successful, whether on Broadway or in the recording industry.
@Ben
“Here’s to hoping that Idol chooses a winning single that’s not about riding rainbows and bathing in a pool of puppies.”
HAHA!! Agreed!
May 7th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Personally, I think it’s crap that they tend to pimp certain contestants on the show and try to influence the vote. I also think it’s horrible that people are stupid enough to fall for it! I’m not an Adam fan at all. I think he’s way too theatrical and screamy and that he doesn’t really fall into any specific genre. What sort of album will he make and who will buy it??
Allison should not have been kicked off. She is by far more talented than any of the guys. I’m not watching anymore this season. The show is getting to be a joke. It doesn’t really matter who wins anyway, it’s all about who can sell records after the show is over.
May 7th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Adam is hand’s down the best. Kris and Danny are like 2 kids playing dress up and Adam’s the real deal.
May 7th, 2009 at 10:58 am
The bottom line is that no matter if one doesn’t care for his style of music, no one can deny that he’s incredibly talented. I don’t particularly care for him, but he has more potential VOCALLY than the other contestants.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Sad Allison is gone, I was hoping the top 2 would be her and Adfam…:(
May 7th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Adam is a breath of fresh air in the stale karoake world of American Idol. Amen for Adam!!!
May 7th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Matt and Allison were my favorites but Adam deserves to win. The combination of his vocal, performance and artistic skills is just too much for the others to overcome. Adam seems like a nice guy as well.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:07 am
In the beginning, Adam blew me away. But as the competition has gone on, he seems more and more like a one-trick pony – a charismatic Axel Rose soundalike. In my opinion, Danny was absolutely awful this week and deserved to go home, and Kris was competent but didn’t have the “Wow” factor you’d like to see this late in the competition. I thought Allison was great this week, and I still think an Adam/Allison finale would have been the right one.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I don’t think it’s fair that even the judges have decided that Adam is the winner and he can do no wrong. They pick the other contestants to pieces in their critiques, and get outright ugly sometimes, but Adam never hears when he’s pitchy or too screechy. I think all of the top 5 are phenomenal singers, but I really feel that Adam is just as susceptible to faltering as any other human being and he should hear when something’s off. Their doing him a disservice by making him think he’s some sort of rock “God” as Kara put it. He has a little work to do yet. That being said, I think Adam will win, and Kris should be in the finale with him because they are the only two contestants who have stayed true to themselves and their style. Danny was way out of his boundaries this week….and he butchered a classic song trying to be something he’s not. But he’s a great singer, nonetheless…so anyone could win and make a great record.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I want Danny Gokey.
What will happen. Adam Lambert.
Not upset about that. Adam’s good. He’s just not good.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Adam will have a career, but it won’t be as a pop star and he’s even too over the top for where Broadway is these days. He’s tailor made to headline a big Vegas act — Phantom of the Opera meets Cirque de Soleil — or else he’ll become a cult favorite, like Antony and the Johnsons. There just is no in between.
May 7th, 2009 at 11:15 am
My favorite is Kris but even I have to say that Adam deserves to win! Even if he doesn’t, you just know that he’ll sell more albums than everyone else in this season
May 7th, 2009 at 11:37 am
I’m going to start a campaign to make sure Adam doesn’t win…like others have already said he is a one trick pony! Not unique…just annoying!
May 7th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Hands down Adam just has to win! Kris and Danny are good but THEY are the one trick ponies and Adam just overshadows them in every way. Had Allison stayed in the competition then I might have a sliver of doubt left about Adam winning but Kris and Danny, though good, just don’t deliver EVERY WEEK like Adam!
May 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I don’t think EW picking him to win is any different than any mag picking anybody to win any competition.
That being said, I do think Adam deserves to win. He’s the most polished and the most ready to make a fantastic album. Will he win? There are no guarantees w/ AI and I think it’s very possible for Kris or Danny to pull out a win, but I think Adam is the most consistently awesome performer, and he’s the most deserving…especially now that Allison is gone :(
May 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am
I am surprised at alot of the comments on here about Adam. Most are negative or neutral. I think he’s the best thing AI has ever seen. He’s beyond the show so whatever happens he is going to make a record and will hopefully have a career after this. Go Adam! He works really hard and deserves it! He is a performer!
May 7th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
I absolutely love him!! … and anyone who thinks Kris was the worst this week obviously went deaf for the ten seconds danny screeched at the end of his song. that was the worst thing I have ever heard.
also! adam does switch it up, he doesn’t do the same thing every week,”tracks of my tears” anyone?
May 7th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
i love love love adam. he has made AI exciting to watch again. besides kelly clarkson and carrie underwood, most of the idol names aren’t too familiar. they fade. adam is so talented and i hope he wins!
May 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Adam is a rock god. It takes alot of balls for anyone to even THINK about doing a Zepp cover and he tore it UP. The dude’s got the pipes of a rock god and he is no doubt destined to sell out arenas.
May 7th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
adam had this competition won since the top 25. vocally he’s light years ahead of the rest of the singers. he can hit notes that none of them can even try. and performance wise.. he looks like he’s been an established artist for years. danny’s pretty good but as we all seen this week his voice is very, very, very limited.
gay, straight, blah! who cares. he’s the most entertaining contestant this show has ever had. and because of him ratings are up and people who never cared about american idol are watching. and will probably continue to watch after he wins.
May 7th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
He’s not gay, and neither was Liberace.
May 7th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I adore him and was shocked that he was in the (er) bottom last week. Danny is a nice guy but has no where near the star power of Adam!
May 7th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
“Je ne sais quoi”? Oh Prunella! Everyone knows precisely “Quoi”! HE’S GAYER THAN ANDERSON COOPER’S SOCK DRAWER!!!!
May 7th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I can’t believe Allison got let go .. especially after Taylor Hicks Jr’s (aka Danny Karaoke Gooky) massive singing accident on Monday.
I DEMAND A RECOUNT!!!

[...] Adam Lambert does Entertainment Weekly – Pink is the New Blog [...]
May 7th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
He’s probably going to win because America seems to love screechy bullcrap music. I was rooting for Matt personally, but only because he’s from my home town. I’d like to see Kris or Danny take it though. Adam annnnoyyys me.
May 7th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
i do not like adam. i think he is pretentious and screechy. he may win but he is not relevant and his career will not take off.
May 7th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Adam is good. But I think it’s unfair that he has basically been given the title when there are 3 contestants left. If the othe contestants went on with the theatrics and wailing that he does every week, they would be critcized and voted off. People should be careful with their early predictions, everyone thought Chris Daughtry was going to be the big winner a few seasons ago, he didn’t even make it to the top 3…
May 7th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
He annoys me. I hope he does not win. Since the beginning I have been WISHING he would just go home already so I could relax and enjoy the show. :)
May 7th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I don’t think it matters if he wins or not. It would help the other contestants careers a lot more if they won. He has it made whatever happens.
There is a saying about different minorities – you have to be twice as good to go half as far. When it gets down to fewer contestants, the people who will not vote for him because he kisses other men will not be spread among many other people.
Of course, if Danny Gokey won I am not sure I would ever watch the show again.
May 7th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Adam is by far the superior singer. But this is not really a singing competition, if it was he would win hands down. A large number of tween girls are going for Kris because he is cute. I predict Kris will win not on talent but because of looks.
May 7th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I am not sipping the Adam Lambert Koolaid. Amen to “repetitive uniqueness” comments above. BLAH!! He needs to go scream on Broadway some more, not on my radio please.
May 7th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Adam is definitely the most talented singer on Idol this year. While I think EW was a little premature in their publication, oh well, they choose what to put on the cover, and if that’s what they want, then they can have it. They know it will sell! I think he should win, I have liked him all season. I was just listening to the clips of the studio versions of his songs on iTunes, and I have to say I am tempted to buy them all and put them on a playlist like a mini cover album… he really sounds great!! (The arrangement of one is not good though… ugh.) And honestly, I don’t care if he’s gay, straight, bi… whatever, he’s TALENTED and sexy.
May 7th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
adam should def win!! but given the fact that america still voted danny over allison who knows what will happen. danny is so no idol material. sure he can sing but he lacks total command of the stage and while everyone in the season has tried to made songs their own he rarely has. he also seems very pompous about the whole thing and in the beginning was preying on the sympathy of everyone. DANNY MUST GO
May 7th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
I am pretty sure he will not win. The Idol demo is pretty middle america and I think the fact that he is most likely gay will play into the fears of this group. There is also the factor that his core audience will not vote for him as fervently as the fans who are going to vote for the perceived underdogs.
But “winning” doesn’t mean a whole lot with this group.
I think producers, songwriters, musicians will all want to work with him, so he will have the most interesting and successful album. I also think allison has a much better shot at pop stardom than kris or danny. They are fine, but not truly distinctive enough to get a shot at pop stardom.
May 7th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Adam is a fantastic singer and I would buy an album/see him in concert. He is nothing if not incredibly charismatic on stage.
May 7th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
WAIT!!! “his song choices have been consistently great”?!?!?!? are you kidding me??!! am i the only person who remembers the “ring of fire” incident?? that was awful!!!! i mean the only person who can sing that is johnny cash. when adam sang it it was all wrong
May 7th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
I don’t understand why people are hating on Danny..I happen to really like Danny I think he has a wonderful voice and I have liked him since the Audition phase He did have an off night but everyone does sometimes.. As for Adam he may be a good singer but I can’t stand his personality he is overly cocky and that just is not cool to me I also can’t stand that people make it a big deal that he is gay so what!!!
May 7th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
OMG, DANNY IS SHIT. HE IS HORRIBLE. DID YOU HEAR THAT ATROCIOUS NOTE HE TRIED TO HIT ON TUESDAY.
Danny needs to go home and people need to stop voting on sympathy!!!
Adam, is just an amazing singer with a control that sends shivers through my whole body. Trust me, if anyone deserves this win is Adam. He is the best since Kelly Clarkson. If Adam won and AI never came back it would be perfect. The two best singer the shows ever head flag posting the career of the show.
Seriously, STOP VOTING for Danny. Adam deserves all the vote because every week he delivers like no one’s business. PITNB should really look up his rendition of Mad World, Track of my Tears, Feeling Good, Hell, all of his songs!
Top 2 should have been Allison and Adam, but since they killed off Allison it should be Adam and Kris with Adam winning. Danny should have been gone long, long time ago like the Scott guy they had.
May 8th, 2009 at 4:13 am
Adam will not win…the very reason he got the cover. America isn’t ready, regardless of his talent. Running it now provides fodder for the heated debates sure to be waged the morning after. Brilliant move by EW. In the unlikely event he doesn’t lose, EW still wins since they were first to scoop Lambert.
Don’t be coy people….just say what you really mean. Save me the time of translating for you-
@Nettie
“Too theatrical for comfort…” = Do they have to flaunt it
“Too cringe worthy to watch…” = Gays disgust me
Will his “theatricality translate as an artist” = Who’s gonna buy a f*gs records? (just ask Liberace)
@April
“He annoys me” = God hates f*gs.
“I’m not an Adam fan at all” = I loathe gays.
“WISHING he would just go home” = May god strike him down.
@Carolina
“He is not relevant ” = Who cares about stupid f*gs.
“His career will not take off” = Red states/Walmart/Iran/Fox will boycott
@Kellene
“Go scream on Broadway some more” = Shut up f*g.
Thanks for those fine gems ladies!
Remember, beauty is where you find it. And if you haven’t found it, ask yourself why? The truth will set you free.
May 8th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Can’t See the Light, just because people don’t like Adam, doesn’t mean they’re homophobic. There’s a level of taste I think Adam is still lacking and others see that too. That’s got nothing to do with his being gay. Personally I adore Adam, but to me, he’s still a little green, just like the other two up there. Let go of your cynicism and hatred, it’s not healthy.
May 8th, 2009 at 6:09 am
I think Adam Lambert is one of the best singers I have ever heard – he has been compared to Freddy Mercury, Elvis and Elton John. I think he has shown his superior talent in not only rock but beautiful ballads as well. He is by far the most exciting contestant on AI ever. I don’t think it matters at all if he is gay or not (it should never matter) – he is superb. I don’t believe he has it in the bag – Kris has the tweens, Danny is good and they both fit a certain mold that America likes which is incredibly disappointing. No matter what, I have no doubt he will have a stellar career.
May 8th, 2009 at 6:26 am
adam for the win
May 8th, 2009 at 7:54 am
he won this competition from the auditions!! no one is even close to the talent, looks, entertainment value, likeability….do i need to go on?? i can’t wait until he wins!!! go adam!!! i love you!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Some of these blogs are unbelievable. Adam sounds the same every week? Don’t they mean Danny. How about “Mad World”,”Ring of Fire”,”Feeling Good”, all with his own artistic touch. How about his” knock your socks off” Rock performance The guy is a musical genious with vocal skills that don’t quit. He delivers on every song, every week and it is a joy to listen to him. That is why the judges love him and so does everyone else in America who isn’t deaf. His charismatic delivery is mesmerizing and engaging. He is an American Idol and should surely win.

I am amazed at the jealous few that say Adam screeches. Adam is the only really talented singer left on American Idol. Allison was a gifted singer that should have outlasted Gookey and Allen, but alas that was not to be. She will however, along with Adam become a major player in the recording business. I cannot say the same for either Danny or Kris, even though Kris has a nice voice. What is Danny going to record, a collection of Taylor Hicks biggest hits?
May 8th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
seriously i just think it would be way too predictable if he wins.. i dont like him i think that he just do things to get attention, i mean he’s obvs talented but i dont think he’s natural at all.. like he is tryin to be/look/act like someone he’s not just to win this…
May 9th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I hope Adam loses! I’m tired of his overly-hype eposure and that screaming-banshee-voice!
The over-rated publicity will definitely back-fire!!
He’s like chips deep fried in over-used pork fat!!
May 9th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
umm.. is it just me or does he sound like Muse every time he performs? I think that’s why he’s winning… plus he kinda looks like he could be edward cullen.
Muse—>Twilight—->Tweens—-> win AI
May 10th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I love gays and I hate Adam. (specifically directed to “can’t see the light”… that is such an ignorant thing to say. Saying that people don’t like adam just because he is gay is beyond stupid) He is so screechy and just ugh. I like his voice when he actually sings but when he gets to those high points i fast forward. It is just bad. That being said. I hope he wins haha. I want Gokey to have more freedom to choose what he wants to do after idol and the same goes for Kris.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I lvoe Adam, and he definitely deserves to win. But I kinda hope he DOESN’T win the whole shabang. I think American Idol might try to make him into something he’s not. If he does win, and they do make a rock record, it’ll probably be the wimpiest rock record possible. I think he’d be better off doing his own thing with an actual band, him on vox. Simple as that. That lame Kris guy should win. He’s not very good. But he’s moderate, and the girls lurve him.
May 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Adam and Allison were my favs. I personally wanted Allison to win because Adam will have a career no matter what
