And The Winner Of ‘Survivor: Tocantins’ Is …
ATTENTION: 'SURVIVOR: TOCANTINS' SPOILER ALERT WARNING

Last night, live at the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC, NY, a new ultimate survivor was crowned on the season finale of Survivor: Tocantins. As usual, the entire cast of contestants was on hand with show host Jeff Probst to find out who was able to Outwit, Outplay and Outlast in order to win the $1 million prize … and it came down to two players — Stephen and JT:

But, so as not to spoil the news for those of you who have yet to watch the finale, I’ll keep the reveal behind the cut. I will say, tho, that the winner won by unanimous jury vote — only the second time in Survivor‘s 18 season history that that has happened …

The winner of Survivor: Tocantins is good ol’ countryboy James JT Thomas:

The tribe has spoken, naming cattle rancher James “J.T.” Thomas Jr. the sole “Survivor.” The 24-year-old country boy prevailed over New Yorker Stephen Fishbach on Sunday’s season finale, claiming the $1 million check and bragging rights. Thomas, who operates a cattle-ranching business in Samson, Ala., wept tears of joy after hearing the result. “I can’t help it,” he said at the post-game special, aired live from New York. “I’m happy — it’s probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my life, obviously.” The winner was chosen by a seven-member jury of “Survivor” peers. Thomas called Fishbach, a corporate consultant and Yale graduate, one of the best friends he’ll “probably ever have” in life. The two formed a strategic — and unlikely — alliance early on in the show, making promises to take each other to the final tribal council. Once there, however, their bond was tested as they presented their cases to the jury. Thomas, who picked Fishbach over chatty hairstylist Erinn Lobdell after winning immunity, was surprised when Fishbach revealed to the jury that — had he been in his ally’s place — he’d have chosen the weaker Lobdell as a power play to win the show. That betrayal of trust? Water under the bridge. “It was something I wrestled with a lot … It felt horrible to come clean with that,” Fishbach recalled. Laughing, Thomas said he pretended to be hurt so he could “pull some votes” in his favor. The 18th edition of the CBS castaway competition was set in the rugged interior of Brazil, where 16 players congregated when the season began.

I have to admit, while I really liked JT the whole season long, I was really rooting for Taj to win the prize. Not only was Taj a member of the fabulous 90′s R&B/pop group SWV but she was also a very likable competitor who flew under the radar and held her own the whole season long. I was bummed when she didn’t make it to the final three. But, that said, I really did like JT. He was the perfect player … he was mostly honest (to a fault), very athletic (winning his own challenges along the way) and fiercely loyal (when even his BFF Stephen admitted that he would not have offered the same loyalty when it came down to the wire). I wasn’t surprised at all that he secured every single jury vote to win the $1 million prize (nor was I too surprised that he also won the $100,000 Fan Favorite prize). If you think about it, JT was more loved by his peers than the last Survivor winner Professor Bob was (who narrowly lost his win to stay at home mom Susie). OMG, I’m such a dork for loving this show so much … but I do. Congrats to JT on his win, it was much deserved.

Oh … and see you next season when Survivor: Samoa debuts:

Bob did not almost lose to Sugar. He almost lost to that old lady that didn’t do anything. Sugar did not get a single vote in the finale.

  2. Amanda says:

I am such a dork about this show, too! I totally argued with my husband last night that if Probst ever goes away then the whole show is shot. I LOVE his commentary and how they let him be so much more than just “the host”.

  3. Jillys says:

I have been saying for 9 years that Survivor is the best show on TV and I still think so! I have not missed an episode since Season 1. And Jeff Probst is the best host ever. I’d love to try out for Survivor someday if it weren’t for all those spiders – EEEK!!!!

  4. Siddy says:

Yes! I was so ecstatic when JT won. His alliance with Stephen is my favourite one of all the seasons.

  5. Karina says:

wohooo!!! it’s JT!!! so happy for him!! Doesn’t Stephen shave??He looks hairier than when he was on brazil!

  6. Ma Dukes says:

J.T. the most deserving survivor EVER! Being a mom myself – I give kudos to his parents for raising a wonderful soul in J.T. He is the real deal – and I hope he never succumbs to the ruthlessness of anyone who wants a piece of his persona!!
Enjoy your well earned million J.T. and peace & joy to your family!

  7. Gayle says:

Fan favorite was $100,000, not $10K.

  8. Tamara says:

Trent! I wish you would blog Survivor all season… Pleeeeasse.

  9. J.T., now that you’ve got a chance at early retirement, how about letting the cows on your ranch retire as well? If you ditch the cattle farm and opt for a humane lifestyle, you’ll prove that you truly are a nice guy. Plus, you’d definitely get my vote for PETA’s 2010 Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door competition.
After all, cattle ranching is directly connected to cruelty to animals, life-threatening diseases, and the destruction of the environment, so it’s pretty obvious that any real “nice guy” would never make ends meet by exploiting cows.

This was one of the best seasons to date–I’ve watched em all. I also was very much rooting for Taj, even though she’s probably got loads of cash in the bank. JT was great though!

The one thing I wanted to mention is that I very much miss reading your opinion on Friday’s blog once the show aired. Bring us Survivor commentary! :)

  12. Nora says:

JT IS SO FRAKKING CUTE!!! GUH. That is all.

  13. Frances says:

Loved the show & was pulling for JT the whole time. Such a
wholesome young man. Please stay just like you are & don’t
let it go to your head. Seem like a good Christian young man.
Was interested in his family. Seem like such sweet people.
Jeff is the greatest. If he ever leaves that is the end of the show.

  14. Libby says:

I don’t care what anyone says, I still LOVE Survivor. And I will continue to love it through the next season, I’m sure.
I was also rooting for Taj…I thought she was great, and she was one of my favourite competitors this season. But she lost sight of the money, in the end, and she trusted the boys too much. JT definitely deserved it in the end. Although if Erinn had managed to worm her way in, I would have given her the money just for being sneaky and sticking around so long. Well done, JT.
And does anyone realize how DAMN FINE he is when he cleans up?

  15. Libby says:

Oh, and @Frances, I definitely agree. If Jeff leaves the show that would be the end. Although since the show began, I’ve been saying I want his job. haha.
