America Crowns A New ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Champion
ATTENTION: 'DANCING WITH THE STARS' SPOILER ALERT WARNING

Last night, the results were in … and a new Dancing with the Stars champion was crowned on live TV. I understand there was much debate between the final two contestants as to which one would win the crown and in the end, I believe, the most consistent contestant won … beating out the runner-up by less than 1%:

So as not to spoil the fun for those of you who have yet to watch the finale ep, I’ll keep the reveal behind the cut. But the winner was on hand here in NYC live this morning to show off the DWTS championship trophy and give the first interview as winner — after the jump, find out who it was …

Olympic gymnast and Gold Medal winner Shawn Johnson is the new Dancing with the Stars champ, beating out the much beloved actor Gilles Marini. Here is a pic of Shawn at Good Morning America earlier this morning showing off her sparkly new trophy:

Shawn Johnson is adding a mirrorball trophy to her collection of Olympic medals. After all, the two glittering prizes seem to go very well together. The 17-year-old gymnast was named “Dancing With the Stars” champion Tuesday during the season finale of the hit ABC show, the third Olympian in eight seasons to win. Johnson and her professional partner, Mark Ballas, held the mirrorball trophy aloft as the rest of the contestants rushed out to greet them, hoisting the couple on their shoulders as sparkling confetti flew. “This has been the best experience ever,” Johnson said after her victory. “I’ve grown so much.” Johnson was tied with fellow finalist Gilles Marini after Melissa Rycroft was dismissed earlier in Tuesday’s show. All three finalists performed one last dance, each earning a perfect score of 30 from the judges. Viewer votes are combined with judges’ scores to determine the “Dancing” champ. Show host Tom Bergeron said “less than 1 percent” separated the two finalists. “This has been, without a doubt the best season ever,” said head judge Len Goodman. “We’ve got the three best dancers here in the final.” Johnson, holding a trophy almost half as tall as she is, celebrated with friends and fans after the show. “This means the world to me,” she said. “I can officially say I’m a dancer, and that’s amazing to me.” Johnson is the third Olympic gold medalist to win the “Dancing” crown. Ice skaters Kristi Yamaguchi and Apolo Anton Ohno have previously taken the show’s trophy. As Ohno noted on Monday’s show, “There’s no Olympian who’s made the finals and not won the show.” Ballas shared the mirrorball with Yamaguchi last year.

Wow! I thought for sure that Gilles Marini would win the whole shebang … there was so much buzz about him, I know for sure that E! News‘s Marc Malkin was prolly cryin’ his eyes out that his fave did not win the championship. Shawn Johnson is a cute little pistol, as a gymnast I’m sure she had no problem learning all the dance moves that would lead to her victory. She’s such a cutie and I’m so glad that she was able to win this year’s trophy. Much congrats goes out to her today. Did any of y’all watch the show this season? Are you happy that Shawn won?

  3. Bleeding Ears says:

Well I had another comment I was going to post… but then went back to confirm her age (17) and now I can’t use it.

  4. shannon says:

Olympic skaters and gymnasts typically do extremely well on this show. It’s all due to their control over their body and movements. I had a feeling Miss Johnson would win it since the beginning of this season.

  5. Epsilon says:

Gilles was robbed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once again this show picks the wrong winner. This upset is worse than when Emmit Smith beat Mario Lopez.

  6. Ann says:

While Shawn was a great dancer who progressed nicely throughout the season, Gilles was by far the better dancer, and was clearly the best from day one. DWTS doesn’t always reward the best dancer. I’m happy for Shawn though, it clearly meant a lot to her and her partner to win this one!

  7. lizav2 says:

so happy shawn won! she so deserved it. gilles was hot, but i thought that cherly did most of the dancing. anywho…happy she won!

  8. Lana says:

I liked Melissa :]] But Shawn is adorable so good for her!

  9. JJ says:

I was kind of rooting for Melissa after her debacle on the Bachelor but really, I liked all 3. I agree that Gilles was probably the best dancer but it’s kind of like American Idol (or uh, LIFE) the best doesn’t always win!

  10. Anna says:

Boo- loved Shawn but Gilles should have won FOR SURE!

  11. ashley says:

she was really good on danceing with the stars wish her well with her gymnastics

  12. cali says:

Boo! I’m from Des Moines, IA, whenever Shawn comes to town she’s rude and ungrateful. Very proud of her accomplishments, but sad she’s letting it go to her head :(

  13. Heather says:

I love DWTS and Gilles was my favorite all along. However, Shawn and Mark have been consistent and got better and better each week. So I was totally rooting for them! So glad Shawn won!! Her and Mark are so cute together too, they should get together!

  14. Dori says:

Trent, when you made the announcement of who was going to be on this season of DWTS I knew she was going to be my favorite and the one I would be rooting for since I watched her last summer in the Olympics. I never actually voted for the show except for the last night this Monday but I’m really glad I did vote because less than 1% is pretty close. I’m so happy Shawn won!!

  15. amber says:

Gilles was robbed! Nothing about watching Shawn was exciting there just wasn’t any pull for me to want to cheer her on. It was hard to see what she was doing with her compact, thick, little body and maybe that’s where I got turned off to her performances. She definitely doesn’t have a typical dancers body so her movements weren’t really seen enough to draw me in.

  16. Michelle says:

I’m happy Shawn won… she seemed to really work during the course of the show and it clearly paid off in the end! I mean, come on, the girl missed her Senior Prom to practice!! I do see why Olympians have a knack for winning these things though… they train year round and once they make the Olympic trials they train even harder in the months leading up to the competition… they know how to keep their bodies toned and ready to move… obviously this paid off! Good for her!

  17. Michelle says:

I loved all 3-it really comes down to votes. NOt enough people voted for Gills..it’s that simple.
    Go shawn!

  18. Anne says:

@cali-I agree one hundred percent. I’m proud of Shawn and what she has done but I am also from Des Moines and it thoroughly upsets me that she has gained a huge ego and isn’t as humble as so many people believe she is. It’s too bad she isn’t as sweet and innocent as everyone believes. Still, I’m proud of her accomplishments.

  19. TheTobin says:

Glad to know my 5 votes from Monday night helped her in that 1% win! Gilles was always pinned to win, and I like rooting for the underdog. The girl just can’t lose :)

  20. fazal says:

    Gilles was ROBBED!
He was the best dancer, graceful, smooth and a real joy to watch
Shawn, did improve in the 11 weeks, however she was stiff & lifeless
    she always looked scared.

    Not a happy camper
