Tori Amos Is ‘Acoustically Attracted To Sin’

Warming up
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Tori Amos was on hand at The Savoy Theater in London, England last night to play a rescheduled concert called Acoustically Attracted to Sin in support of her new album Abnormally Attracted to Sin which is due out on May 19. Pink reader Kush was lucky enough to be in attendance at last night’s performance and graciously shares a very extensive review of the show. Here are a few photos from Tori’s acoustic concert (which essentially means she had no backing band) last night along with Kush’s very detailed review:

The first thing I have to say I have seen Tori many times but I have never heard her sing so perfectly – Her voice was incredibly powerful, she hit every note and had perfect diction – She seemed to really enjoy being back in front of an audience again accompanied with her Bosendorfer and a keyboard. She wore black leggings under a red dress embroidered with black stars.

The opening track was a total surprise – a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Famous Blue Raincoat. There must have been a reason for this as it was an extremely heartfelt and heartbreaking performance (it definitely wasn’t the London weather which was bright and breezy). Lady in Blue is certain to become a favourite of solo sections – I’ve only heard the i-tunes snippet of the album version and this sounded totally different – stripped down and harsh. This track twinned perfectly with another new song Curtain Call (appropriate for the theatre setting). Tori straddled her stool to play both keyboard and piano for Crucify which was welcomed with a huge round of applause from the audience.

The next moment was another terrific surprise. Its been a long time since we’ve heard Tori enjoyed chatting to the audience and it was a welcome return – She is just SO funny. Apologising for the ‘crap’ cancelling of the show two weeks ago, she also mentioned that she’d be seeing Matty and Jon in the next week and that they would definitely be touring with her later in the year. The rescheduling also brought a welcome surprise – Tori mentioned that she had a female security guard for the evening, called Sade after which she burst out a rendition of Sades Smooth Operator – This is going to be a must-hear!

After the mischief of Leather, the audience was plunged into a soul-drenching performance of Maybe California which caused more than a few tears in the audience. My highlight of the evening was definitely the all -piano rendition of Taxi Ride: It was like the girl was wearing a new dress and without the reverberations of the Wurli it was simply lovely to hear each crystal clear word. Tori got back to mischief (and more chat) with Mary Jane. There has been a lot of love-hate around this song but I promise that after you hear it live – you’ll love it. The song really suits a theatre setting with its Weimar-esque melody. This was fun Tori and the audience burst into laughter at the line ‘I believe your puberty was somewhat strange…’ Jackie’s Strength was a perfect little gem as always while Wednesday was playfulness personified – At the end of each verse Tori teased with audience with gestures before breaking into the chorus.

Keyboard and piano united for Welcome to England – Tori played a pounded a lot of lower notes during the chorus creating a dramatic tour de force – you could imagine Atlantic waves crashing against the Cornish coast providing a dramatic framing for the calmness of Cool on Your Island. As always Silent all these Years induced a huge round of applause, its mermaid theme exaggerated by blueish lighting including static streaks of blue. The main set closed with Barons of Suburbia reminding us that the much-maligned Beekeeper album has powerful and potent magic. Tori’s vocal excellence reached the levels of mesmerising majesty in the songs drawn out climax. The first and only encore included a beautiful rendition of Over the Rainbow followed by Putting the Damage On – The only damage tonight was magic was over far too soon. Sublime.

Wow. It sounds like a truly spectacular performance. Much love goes out to Kush for such an amazingly detailed review … it really makes the reader feel as if they were there at The Savoy last night. Hearing this review really makes me anxious to see Tori Amos live in concert again. Folks who have preordered her album on iTunes will be granted early access to presale tickets for her upcoming tour … we should be hearing about those onsale dates soon. WEEEE! After the jump, check out the full setlist from Tori Amos’s Acoustically Attracted to Sin performance last night …

Sarah Michelle Gellar Begins Filming ‘The Wonderful Maladys’

Takin' the bump to work
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

New mom-to-be Sarah Michelle Gellar, who we learned last month is pregs with her first child with hubby Freddie Prinze, Jr., was spotted on the Upper West Side NYC set of her new HBO series The Wonderful Maladys this morning filming the first scenes for the series. Altho there is nary a bump to be seen in these photos, we know it’s under those loose-fitting clothes somewhere ;) Here are pics of SMG in her role as Alice Malady on set this AM:

Except for the vocal work she did on the Cartoon Network series Robot Chicken (which was created by Buffyverse album Seth Green), The Wonderful Maladys is SMG’s first TV series since Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003 (yikes! has it been that long already?). Here’s hoping her stint on the new HBO series will be more successful than her attempt at a movie career. Now that she has a new mouth to feed on the way, well, having a job is a good idea in this economic environment. While I would really love for SMG to be slipping back into her vampire slayer threads, I am looking forward to seeing her on TV again. I’m hearing great things about the show.

Leighton Meester Teams Up With Coba Starship For A New Music Video

'Gossip' girl goes bad
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Late last week we got our first listen to the new Cobra Starship song Good Girls Go Bad which features Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester on guest vocals … today, we get our first look at the filming of the music video which is scheduled for release in June. Here are a couple pics of the Cobra Starship kids and Leighton on the set of their new video:

I just love Cobra Starship (frontman Gabe Saporta is my homie) and I think it’s genius that they teamed up with Leighton for the first single off their new album titled Hot Mess (due out this August). Leighton, as you may be aware, is prepping her own solo album for release later this year as well so her guest vocal on the new Cobra Starship track is a great intro to her singing style. Head over to the official Cobra Starship My Space profile page to hear the track again OR you can download it at iTunes. It’s a hawt track … I can’t wait to see the vid!

Donald Trump Rules, Carrie Prejean Will Keep Her Crown

"We're in the 21st century"
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

It would seem that Donald Trump is a fan of semi-nude, topless photos taken by his beauty queens because he has just announced in a live press conference that Carrie Prejean WILL keep her Miss California USA crown since, in his judgment, we live in “the 21st century” and, apparently, topless pics of beauty queens are “lovely” and “fine”:

Donald Trump will let Miss California USA Carrie Prejean keep her title despite controversy over semi-nude photos and charges by state pageant officials that she had abandoned her duties to devote time to opposition to same-sex marriage. “We’re in the 21st century,” Trump said, explaining Prejean is a model.

And there you have it. I suspect, barring the release of any new photos, this may be the last we’ll be hearing about Prejean possibly losing her crown. Now she can go back to the biz of taking care of her Miss California USA duties which, supposedly, center on advocating the needs of people with Special Needs. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if that will actually be the case.

Hugh Jackman Takes Snow White Out For A Playdate

Resumption of duty
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Now that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is out in theaters, Hugh Jackman has been able to return to his family fold (currently in NYC) so that he can get back to the biz of spending time with his children … as these new photos show. Here are pics of Hugh enjoying a day in the city with is daughter Ava Eliot in her guise of Snow White lookin’ as cute as can be:

Aww … I love pics of Hugh with his kids. They always look like they are having so much fun. As much as I’m sure Hugh likes making big blockbuster films like Wolverine, I think it’s clear from photos like this that being a dad is his fave job of all.

A New Batch Of Carrie Prejean Topless Photos Comes To Light

Even the Devil wouldn't recognize you
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Embattled and currently reigning (for now) Miss California USA Carrie Prejean will find out today from Donald Trump (the owner of the Miss USA organization which governs her title) whether or not she will be able to keep her crown in the wake of her topless photos scandal. Thus far, it’s not turning out to be a great day for Prejean. She has previously acknowledged taking topless photos when she was “young” and “naive” but has insisted that she did nothing to invalidate the contract she signed when competing to become Miss California USA (which requires full disclosure of any questionable photos taken of the contestants before they compete in the pageant). TMZ has uncovered a new batch of photos that show Carrie Prejean posing in, I would say, questionable poses … with her nips showing in many of the photos:

Carrie Prejean must have a really, really bad memory — because TMZ uncovered a brand new set of topless photos “biblically correct” Miss California took before she applied for the crown. These pics were taken just last year — meaning Carrie was the ripe ol’ LEGAL age of 20. This time, Carrie dropped her top for a professional photo shoot … another partially nude gig that she forgot to tell the Miss California officials about. Donald Trump will decide today whether or not he’ll give Carrie the heave ho.

HMMM … yes, these photos are much racier than the first topless photo we saw. It’s interesting that as Prejean was commenting on the moral high ground she failed to mention this new batch of topless photos, even in the wake of the emergence of the first topless photo. See, again, my problem with all of this is that moral superiority ends up focusing the light of scrutiny so squarely on one’s holier-than-thou shoulders (and bared breasts, apparently) that one must be very careful when hurtling morality at other people. So … did the Devil make her pose for these photos? If not, what (according to her) has been his involvement in her life recently? After the jump, read some new comments from Carrie Prejean where she tries to lay blame on Satan’s doorstep for the trials and tribulations in her recent life …

First Look: Heidi Montag, ‘Blackout’

She risked Swine Flu for this?
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Late last month we learned that newlyweds Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt risked life and limb and ventured South of the border into Mexico at the height of the swine flu pandemic in order to do a little honeymoonin’ but also to shoot the music video for Heidi’s new single titled Blackout. The couple only stayed in Mexico for a very short time before cutting their losses and returning to the relative safety of the US … but not before they were able to film enough footage to make Heidi’s music video. Here is our first look at the fruits of their labor:

Much like the other music videos that Speidi have collaborated on (Heidi in front of the camera, Spencer behind), this video has that homemade feel that makes all of Heidi’s music videos look … sparse (tho, in her defense, the video she had made for her song Overdosin’ did have a bit more production value to it … not that that helped much). After the jump, check out the music video for Blackout in full — if you dare …
