Last night I met up with Darion and Loy for a quick bite to eat in Century City before we made our way to the movies. It was cool and rainy so we were really looking forward to a fun night at the movies … unfortch, Adventureland was not quite what we had in mind:

To be fair, the movie totally had its heart in the right place … it tried really hard to be good but, sadly, I didn’t find a thing about it that I liked. The story dragged way too long and the acting performances were not impressive at all. The main guy wants to be Michael Cera so bad … it was kinda sad. Ryan Reynolds, it pains me to say, was so boring in this film … it almost diminished my lurve for him. His character was desperate to be the character that Matthew McConaughey played in Dazed & Confused but it fell waaaaaaaaaaaaaay short. In fact, Adventureland the movie was a really sad attempt to be Dazed & Confused … it’s really bad. None of us were really impressed with the movie at all. I really cannot recommend this film at all … it’s not that funny, it’s not at all deep and it drags the entire time. I’m curious to hear if anyone else liked it … and why. As I said, the movie really tried but, IMHO, does not deliver.
No plans for tonight just yet … I have to finish some chores here and then pack my shizz for my weekend trip back East. While I am not looking forward to all the flying, I am looking forward to seeing David and his family. For them, I’d fly anywhere.

I don’t know, I don’t think it was a piece of cinematic greatness….but I don’t believe it was trying to be. I genuinely laughed in some places, and thought Stewart played the angst-y teen role pretty spot on.
I really want to like her, but one of the main reasons I have a hard time doing this is the total lack of chemistry she has with on-screen love interests. You don’t get a sense of real intimacy, and the love line falters. This is especially unsettling as she is set to play half of one hell of a love story.
I’m anxious to see what new direction will bring.
As for the rest of Adventureland…..I found it to be tolerable. Sorry.
Well that sucks cause I thought it was going to be a funny movie by watching the trailer. If you guys really don’t want to spend your money on it go to Movie6.net and watch it on there. It might not be good quality but its FREE!!!
My boyfriend thought K. Stew was hot….and that was pretty much it. We also had high hopes for it, but it was mediocre. I agree about the Michael Cera thing.
I really liked it. I feel the comparison to Michael Cera is not applicable here. Just because the movie has the feel/look ( or was marketed) to be like Superbad and Juno. I compared it more with the gay film Edge of Seventeen (also takes place during a summer job at an amusement park, most of it anyway). I thought Jesse was great – I don’t believe there were any scenes where Michael Cera had to cry in any of his movies (from real sadness and not embrassment). While it wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be, I don’t think it deserves the thrashing it’s getting here.
But, Ryan Reynolds was pretty bad in it, but I don’t think his part was written well either – it’s always hard to tell if the writing is bad or if the actor isn’t delivering it “right” – we’ll have to wait for the remake in 2042 to see which one it is. :)
Thanks for the head’s up. I’m skipping this one now.
And K. Stew is so irritating and boring and rude all the time, which is why I think she was PERFECT to play Bella in Twilight.
I saw it friday night and loved it. Kristen had more facial expressions in this movie than in Twilight, i mean she actually cried in this film when it called for tears, unlike Twilight when all she gave us were a few deep breaths and a scared look. and you shouldn’t go into it expecting an Oscar performance, you should expect a few laughs though. and don’t be comparing the lead actor to Michael Cera, they are two very different people.
i heard good things – guess i’ll have to see for myself.
Trent I know the movie suked but…was the guy from saturday night live good AT ALL?? Or am i mistaken and he wasnt even in that movie?
:)
I saw a dry run of this movie at the theater I work at and I walked out liking it. I believe a lot of people will be dissapointed if you go into it thinking it’ll be Superbad. It’s the way they’re advertising it is probably the reason why people go in thinking it’ll be a vulgar raunchy comedy.
Kristen Stewart bothered me. She always plays with her hair. She did it in Twilight as well… why? Why is it absolutely vital for her to breath heavily in frustration, play with her hair then arch her eyebrow… it’s practically all she does.
Ryan Reynolds played a bad character anyway… I mean you weren’t supposed to like him in this movie, I don’t think. He plays a dickhead. Plain and simple.
In the end tho, I did enjoy it. It does drag on a bit but it’s definetly light hearted good times.
I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Bill From Freaks and Geeks. He’s pretty much the most awesome guy ever. GO. Watch Freaks and Geeks NOW
^Yep, Haverchuck and Hader are the two reasons I want to see this. I don’t even mind if it’s a boring version of Dazed and Confused, but the comments about it being more like Juno and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist have me rethinking. Those two were awful, so “look how indy we are!”
Also, in addition to Chanlie’s Freaks and Geeks recommendation, everyone should watch Undeclared!
I still haven’t decided whether or not I want to see this movie… I liked Garden State and it does sort of remind me of that… yet I probably will never watch Garden State again. Know what I mean? I am curious to see K. Stew play someone other then Bella… I’ve seen Twilight one time too many and now she’s kind of become that character if you know what I mean? So while I wanna see her as someone else, I’m not sure I want to go sit through this movie. And that kid does remind me of a Michael Cera wannabe and I’m sorry there can only be one Cera!!
loved it!!!!!
stewart is one of my least fav actresses. she just annoys me.
i have to say i was a tad bias seeing it was filmed in my hometown. w00t woot!
the run down bar in the movie was down the street.
and just remember everyone. no one can ever win the giant ass panda!
Awww, I haven’t seen the film but totally love Jesse ever since Roger Dodger…unfortunately I think it’s probably the other way around…Michael is a Jesse wannabe, since Jesse has been around way longer…just less popular I suppose.
Well I just have to say I loved it. Maybe I’m a bit biased because the park this was filmed at is called Kennywood, which is in Pittsburgh, which is my home town! I don’t think it was really supposed to be a comedy, more of a dramedy. I think the lead guy was BETTER than MC. That kid is just too much of a type cast actor.
Sometimes I feel like you thumbs up almost everything, Trent. I like that you don’t like this. Thanks for the honesty. :)
Trent, Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg are completely different. Cera will have no longevity in Hollywood because he plays the same character everytime, and eventually his looks and age won’t match his demeanor. Jesse, on the other hand, has turned in deep and moving performances in both Roger Dodger and 2005′s The Squid in the Whale. I highly recommend you see Squid and the Whale– hopefully it will change your mind about Jesse.
Me and my friend were really excited to see Adventureland, but it was terrible! And Trent is totally right about the main guy wanting to be Michael Cera….we were saying the exact same thing when it ended..not funny, movie totally not worth it!
i, along with all the other people i went to see it with, absolutely loved this movie. i agree that it is not a ‘superbad,’ but it isn’t trying to be. i found it sweet, moving, and completely relatable. i definitely laughed at many parts, and bill hader and kristin wiig are amazing as always, but i also went away touched. it had a definite sense of nostalgia for me. this was a great film, i completely recommend people go and see it for themselves before forming an opinion. or read more reviews! like someone else said, it does have an 89% on rotten tomatoes, and i find they are usually pretty spot on. see it and enjoy it! it is great.
